At this weekend’s All-Star festivi-ties, the Washington Capitals will be represented by two players on op-posite ends of the All-Star experience spectrum.

The veteran is left wing Alex Ovechkin, who’s set to make his fourth appearance in the contest. The green one? Defenseman Mike Green, a postseason first-team All-Star after each of the last two sea-sons who’s slated to make his first appearance.

Green led Washington defense-men with eight goals and 22 points in his first 43 games and was the team leader in ice time.

Despite his offensive prow-ess, Green has a history of being snubbed, as he wasn’t selected for the 2009 All-Star Game and wasn’t selected to play for Team Canada in the 2010 Olympics. That made his inclusion in this year’s festivities all the more special.

“This is different for me,” Green said. “I’ve never been there before like Alex has, and I’m definitely ex-cited and honored at the same time. I’m just very humbled to be picked for this game and I think it’ll be a good experience for me.”

Ovechkin, on the other hand, has been there plenty of times. The Capi-tals’ leading scorer with 48 points en-tering last weekend has been a star among All-Stars for his skills competi-tion antics, and his high-energy style.

Even though he participated in the Dallas, Atlanta and Montreal events, he still expressed excitement to be headed to Raleigh, N.C., this weekend.

“It’s not routine. It’s a big honor for me,” he said. “It’s always nice when the fans choose you to be in the All-Star game.”

This year’s game has a different format than the past, as the teams

won’t be decided by the players’ conference af-filiation.

Instead, the league will hold an All-Star Player Fantasy Draft Friday. Carolina’s Eric Staal and D e t r o i t ’ s

Nicklas Lidstrom have been picked as the two captains and will select the teams in a live-television event. Green will assist Staal as one of two alternate captains on the hometown captain’s team.

Green remarked that the set-up brings him back to childhood.

“Back to the street hockey days when you split up two guys and they pick teams,” he said. “I think it’s good,

though. I think it makes it interest-ing, see who the guys pick and it’ll be interesting for the fans.”

There are rules in place for the draft, but none that restrict teammates such as Ovechkin and Green from lining up opposite each other in the All-Star Game.

“I hope I’m going to stay on the same team with Green because I don’t want to hit him hard,” Ovechkin joked.

Green may have a chance to steer Staal toward picking Ovechkin, but shared similar sentiments about the possibility of going up against Ovechkin for the first time. His focus would be simple.

“Just make sure he doesn’t beat me,” Green said. “That’s it, and hope-fully don’t run into him.”

DEFENSE PROVIDES A SPARKFlashback: Flashback: Flashback: Jan. 29, 1994Jan. 29, 1994Jan. 29, 1994

A supreme offensive effort from the Capitals’ blueline on this night ignited an impressive streak which saved the franchise’s 20th season.

Defenseman Kevin Hatcher re-corded two goals and an assist while fellow blueliner Calle Johans-son added two assists in a 4-2 win at Philadelphia which snapped a four-game slide.

One night later, the Caps topped Detroit 6-3 at home and were on their way.

Washington entered the win over the Flyers with a 20-24-2 record. But that night, the Caps started a three-game winning streak which then extended into seven victories in eight

games and then stretched to 11-2-2 over 15 contests.

On Jan. 27, the Capitals had just 44 points. One month later, they had inflated that total to 68.

That prosperous stretch propelled Washington into the playoffs, where the team met bitter postseason rival Pittsburgh in the first round.

Goaltender Don Beaupre won all four games he played and the Capi-tals went on to advance in six games, earning their only series win over the Penguins in eight tries.

It might never have happened with-out the defensive spark Washington received from Hatcher and Johansson on Jan. 29 in Philadelphia.

12, 13, 25 Washington captain Alex Ovechkin’s goals, assists and points total in 21 career games against Tuesday’s

opponent, the Montreal Canadiens.

Chimera on Caps’ top line again tonight. Boudreau: “you have to honor the

speed.” Now that’s a T-shirt slogan. – @lindsapple on Chimera’s line shift

for the Jan. 20 game at the New York Islanders.

“We just need to bear down a little more around the net, find rebounds and get some ugly goals. I think you’re going to score ugly goals first, before you get the pretty ones. You work hard, you get the few ugly goals and then the puck will seem to fly around the ice a little bit easier and get on somebody’s tape.” – Caps forward Mike Knuble(right) told WashingtonCaps.com’s Mike Vogel about what it’ll take to get the team’s ailing offense going.

Hatcher finished the 1993-94 season with 16 goals.

This weekend will mark Ovechkin’s fourth NHL All-

Star Game appearance.

“It really shows mental toughness. It happens all the time where you doubt yourself when you leave on a bad note. It was a great

moment for him.” – Caps coach Bruce Boudreau on rookie goaltender Braden Holtby (left), who permitted one goal against the New York Islanders Jan. 20. It was Holtby’s first appearance

since a 5-0 loss to New Jersey Nov. 22.

“It was a beautiful goal by [Brooks Laich] and it gave us

a little bit of jump in our step. It brought back those good memories that we had when we were scoring goals. It helped us out, obviously.” – Defenseman John Carlson of the

Caps’ three-goal third-period outburst in a 3-1 win over Ottawa on Jan. 16.

Saw ‘The Dilemma’ today, thought it was pretty good....Did anyone else notice that Jason Chimera is in the movie?– @EricFehr16 on Jan. 15.

Q: Now that you’re nearing a return, where’s your level of excitement?MB: Obviously, I’m quite eager to get back on the ice, so hopefully it’s sooner than later. You never like getting injured like this, but it’s a part of the game and you kind of just have to deal with it and get ready for when you can come back.Q: Is this the most severe hockey injury you’ve ever suffered?MB: A couple years ago, I broke a different fi nger so it was basically the same thing, but yeah, espe-cially as far as my time out. It’s going to be about a month, which is quite a long time. So yeah, knock on wood, it’s the worst I’ve had so far.Q: Considering the fact that the rest of your body is healthy, how frustrating has it been?MB: I say that to a lot of people. It’s extra annoying

when it’s the tip of your fi nger. If it was your leg or some-thing, it’s easier to understand. But when it’s a stupid little thing like that keeping you out, it’s very frustrating. But on the other hand, I have to make sure it heals and it heals properly before I come back because the last thing I want to do is reinjure it and miss more games. So you’ve got to make sure it’s ready to go before I come back on the ice. … It’d be nice to get a couple games in before the All-Star break, so that’s what I’m shooting for.Q: Was the timing of the injury the most dis-appointing part because it caused you to miss the Winter Classic?MB: Yeah. Everyone had that game circled on their calendar for the year and I was no exception. Who knows if I’ll ever get a chance to play in another one of those? It was disappointing, but the fact the team won made it made it more enjoyable. The whole experience was great, but obviously I would’ve liked to be on the ice.

Q: Being out close to a month, you’ve had a unique perspective of seeing the team go through a long skid and then start an upswing. What have you noticed watching them from off-ice?MB: Coming off that long losing streak we had, we knew we had to kind of change the way we played. This year, we’re not winning games 5-3 or 6-4 or big high-scoring games like that, and when that’s not happening, you have to tighten up the defense, which I think we’ve done. The games we’re winning, we’re winning by a goal and they’re usually lower-scoring games. But I think in the end, that’s going to help us because as we all know, when it comes down to the playoffs, they’re obviously tight games and they’re usually not high-scoring games. So to learn how to play like that now is I think a blessing.

Because of a broken fi nger which required surgery, Capitals right wing Matt Bradley hasn’t played since Dec. 21 and missed the Winter Classic. Bradley, 32, has been one of the team’s top energy forwards for six seasons. This year, he has recorded nine points in 29 games.
