As he thinks back tothe first time he re-called having problemswith his vision, Ray-mond Poirier has tolaugh for a minute. What the 61-year-old
was bringing himselfback to was the age of8, Catholic school inhis home state ofRhode Island, whereeveryone kept tellinghim that many of hisproblems didn't comefrom him not knowingthings, but actually notbeing able to see them."I was a defiant,
young kid who reallydidn't want to wearglasses," Poirier said."But I guess every childhas that certain vanity."While vision prob-
lems have plagued himfor much of his life, other unfortunate cir-cumstances have alsosurrounded Poirier'slengthy career as aconstruction worker.Within the struggle tosee - with eye coveringprotecting him - a se-vere accident brokeboth of his legs andtruly had Poirier scram-bling to just live eachday."Pain was crazy, but
the fact that I now hadvision problems andtwo bad legs, com-pounded the crazi-ness," Poirier said. "Itwas like a curse orsomething."While being depend-
ent on pain relief medi-cine, Poirier decided tohead to south Floridato spend time with amother who had beenill. While there were somany negatives sur-rounding his life, thetrip to take care of hismother turned out tobe - a life changer.
While battlingthrough contacts andmiracle cures for hisneed to wear glassesfor distance and near,Poirier headed to theworld-famous BascomPalmer Institute inMiami - where plenty ofanswers came his way,but the results fellshort."They told me that if
I got a special contactlens, my vision wouldbe good," Poirier re-called. "It wasn't and Iwas a huge mess."This was the Monovi-sion option, one eye fordistance, one eye for
near.Still searching for the
answers to correctinghis vision, it was histurn to finally get somepositive news in his lifewhen Poirier, who tookhis mother for a visit toDr. Stanley Bravermanin Hallandale Beach, read an article on thewall inside the office."I remember reading
that story about LaserVision Correction"Poirier said. "It was thebest decision ever. From the moment I metDr. Braverman, I wasblown away with howmuch he knew exactlywhat I was experienc-ing."When Dr. Braverman
explained the proce-dure, Poirier was sold.He was ready to finallymake that decision -even with all he hadbeen through physi-cally and emotionally."It was a Tuesday,
and kidding with Dr.Braverman about whenwe could do this proce-dure, I said what abouttomorrow," Poirier re-called. "Without hesita-tion, he turned to meand said what aboutThursday! Now, thatwas something that re-ally surprised me."Anxious for the sur-
gery to take place,Poirier set up the exacttime his mother woulddrop him off and pickhim, giving a block oftime for the Presby-Lasik procedure to beperformed. As the pro-cedure started at 10:30,a few clicks later and aworld was changed. The eyesight that hadfailed him for much ofhis life had been cor-rected.The avid hunter and
fisherman, who hadbeen restricted withfogging-eye protectors
and other things thattruly prevented himfrom fully enjoying hislife, had finally noticeda change - and it wasquick."When Dr. Braver-
man left the room for amoment, I kind oflooked to my right andleft and was reallyblown away," Poirierexplained. "It was like afeeling that somethinghad happened in sucha positive way to makemy life better."While his vision luck
has turned out to be ablessing, Poirier stillcan't avoid the injurybug. During a recenttrip with hunting andfishing friends inMaine, he slipped on awet rock and broke hisshoulder. Although hequickly kicked the painpills that became es-sential after the acci-dent, he told Dr.Braverman that it wasindeed all his fault."I wanted to assure
him that I saw that rockperfectly," Poirierlaughed. "I could notbe more satisfied withthe outcome."
NEAR-FAR MULTIFOCAL PRESBYLASIK: Correc-tion for two kindsof vision problemsNew procedure can
correct both Distanceand Near VisionDr. Braverman
started doing the Pres-byLasik procedure overtwo years ago. It wasintroduced into theUnited States approxi-mately six years ago, having originally beendone using the Alle-gretto Wavelight fem-tosecond laser by anItalian Eye Surgeon, Dr.Roberto Pinelli. This isthe same Laser that Dr.Braverman uses. Dr.
Braverman said “thistechnique was devel-oped by taking whatEye Surgeons alreadyknew about how Lasikchanges the shape ofthe front of the eye toeliminate glasses, andjust modifying thetechniques to be ableto reduce or eliminatethe need for distanceglasses, as well asreading glasses."
WHAT TO EXPECTWITH Z-LASIK SURGERY All Laser Lasik sur-
gery is performed on apatient’s cornea, whichprovides most of thefocusing power whenlight enters the eye.Topical anestheticdrops are applied tothe eye. The surgeonfirst uses a specialZiemer LDV femtosec-ond laser to create athin layer of cornealtissue that can befolded back (a cornealflap). Then, anothertype of laser (an Alle-gretto Eye-Q excimerlaser) is used to re-shape the underlyingcornea, painlessly. After the excimer lasertreatment, the cornealflap is repositioned andbonds back into placenaturally. The cornealreshaping improves thefocusing power of thecornea. Although no one can
promise patients “per-fect” vision, most LaserVision Correction pa-tients with mild tomoderate prescriptionswith or without astig-matism, do achieve20/20 or better vision. This means that they
no longer need glassesor contacts to drive, play most sports, andwatch TV. Also, you canparticipate in careersrequiring good unaidedvision, such as police-men or firemen need.
