As regulations on this highly-scrutinised industry continue to increase, PNC knew they would need to improve
transparency and handling capability of their policies and procedures. Over the years, they made considerable
investments in both Lotus Notes® and an intranet website to manage their documents. Still, neither system met PNC’s
high standards, and overlap between the applications created confusion and version control trouble. From a compliance
perspective, the lack of clarity, consistency, and readership metrics was an unacceptable risk for the institution. PNC

Challenges: Internal and ExternalBeyond the daunting task of controlling critical documents for internal use, PNC Bank, like all similar financial institutions,
needed to comply with a wide variety of regulations which include:

» Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002
» Anti-money Laundering (1986, 1992, 1994, 1998)
» Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010
Consistent with its reputation as a banking industry leader, PNC Bank sought to clean-up the problems caused by using
these two separate policy and procedure management systems. In addition to providing a more user friendly system,
PNC also wanted to reduce costs in terms of employee time investment and the quality of policy development. However,
the greatest perceived ROI came from the increased policy knowledge and awareness by employees.“ Instead of
walking around the hospital noting errors in a spreadsheet during our ‘Safety Walks,’ it was easy to create a Safety Walk
template in PolicyTech,” said Sheikh.
Sabrina Viscomi, Project Manager for PNC Bank, elaborated on their situation. “Our Lotus Notes database search had
no advanced features and our Intranet was flooded with outdated information that muddles the search. It just didn’t
return accurate results.”

a constant issue.
