An expository sermon on How to overcome worry taken from the sermon on the Mount as recorded in Mathew 6:25 to 34
  • 1.Overcoming Worry Part 2 Mathew 6:25 to 34

  • I INTRODUCTION to the topic and contextual background
  • This part of Mathew belongs to a greater passage known as the Sermon on the Mountin here, Jesus gives the standards of the Kingdom (Mathew 4:23) which is very different from the standards of Jewish laws.
  • In Chapters 6 versus 19 to 34 Jesus gives the Kingdom code of conduct with regards to our attitudes towards material possessions.Verses 19 to 24 talks about what are attitudes should be if we have lots of possession. Verses 25 to 34 talks about our attitude regarding even the basic necessities of life.
  • There is an often repeated phrase in the passage is Take no thought. which is the word Merimnao What this basically means is"Be not anxious...." or Don't worry The words appears 4 times in this passage, verse 25, 28, 31and 34.

3. II THREE REASONS WHY WE SHOULD NOT WORRY B.) Its unwise because of our Father (vs. 26 to 30) D.) Its unwise because of our Future(vs. 34) C .) Its unwise because our Faith (vs. 31 33) A.) Its unnecessary because theres to life thanthe physical (vs. 25) 4. B.) Worry is unwise because of your heavenly Father Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Mathew 6:26 30 5. B.) Worry is unwise because of your heavenly Father The basic point of our Lord Jesus Christ is that there is absolutely no reason to worry because God our heavenly Father cares for us. To illustrate his point, Jesus shows how unnecessary and foolish it is to worry about theFood, Life expectancy and clothing.a.) Food (vs. 26)- Jesus is is showing us how birds who do not have a complicated process to acquire food is provided for by the heavenly Father. He reminds us that we are much more better than the birds. Our Heavenly Father cares for us. (Mathew 7:7 to 11) He is not saying we should be lazy, but we should not worry about it. 6. B.) Worry is unwise because of your heavenly Father

  • b.) Length of Life (vs. 27)
  • - Stature here refers to life span.
  • Our culture is obsessed with trying to lengthen life.
  • - Our lives is in the hands of our heavenly Father, no matter what we do to lengthen it. No use worrying about it.It does not mean that we should not live responsibly but that we should not be preoccupied or worry about it.

7. B.) Worry is unwise because of your heavenly Father c.) Clothing (vs. 28 - 30) The lilies of the field make no effort to grow and no part in designing or coloring themselves compared to humans who spend so much time and money to dress themselves. Yet God has clothed these field lilies which do not even last very long 8. Oh ye of little faith It is interesting to note that when our LordJesus Christ used this expression he used them when people worryabout Food, Life and clothing: And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. Mathew 8:24 to 26 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? Mathew 14:31 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? Mathew 16:8 9. C.) Worry is unwise because of our faith Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. (Mathew 6:31,32) - Worry is inconsistent with our faith. God cares for us and promised that he will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory. (Philippians 4:6, 19) - The Gentiles, or unbelievers only eagerly seek the temporal because they have nothing to live for but the present. Most of philosophy of the Gentiles during Jesus day was to Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die(1 Corinthians 15:32) 10. Instead of worrying just like the Gentiles do, Jesus is instructingus to: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Mathew 6:33 "Seek ye first,- Protos, means first. First in a line of more than one options. Of all the things you can choose from in life to be occupied on or concernedabout, of all the priorities of life this is number one, Kingdom of God The reign of Jesus Christ in the hearts of man. and all these things shall be added unto youYou put God first and his Kingdom first and God will take care of your physical needs. 11. D.) Worry is unwise because of our future Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall takethought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evilthereof. Mathew 6:34 Tomorrow will take care of itself because it is in the Fathers heavenly hands. Each day has enough trouble of its own. As believers we have to concentrate on the present instead of worrying about the future. We do not need worry what may come in the future, because God holds the future. 12. I don't know about tomorrow, I just live from day to day. I don't borrow from it's sunshine, For it's skies may turn to gray. I don't worry o'er the future, For I know what Jesus said, And today I'll walk beside Him, For He knows what is ahead.I don't know about tomorrow, It may bring me poverty; But the One Who feeds the sparrow, Is the One Who stands by me. And the path that be my portion, May be through the flame or flood, But His presence goes before me, And I'm covered with His blood. Many things about tomorrow, I don't seem to understand; But I know Who holds tomorrow, And I know Who holds my hand
