Situated at the south-eastern tip of China, Hong Kong is ideally positioned at
the centre of the rapidly developing East Asia region. With a total area of 1,104
square kilometres, Hong Kong has 3 main areas: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula
and the New Territories. The majority of people are ethnic Chinese, speaking Cantonese and
some Mandarin (Putonghua). However, English is widely used in daily life and especially in
Government and the legal, professional and business sectors. Being Asia’s World City, Hong
Kong is also home to substantial numbers of expatriates from around the world who work in a
wide range of occupations.

Hong Kong is a land of vast opportunities: the major gateway to Mainland China and
much of the East Asia. Taking a f light from the Hong Kong International Airport, one can
reach most countries in Asia within five hours. There is nowhere better than Hong Kong to
obtain the expertise, information and facilities needed to tap into the blooming East Asian
Market. This central position is also one of the key reasons for the city’s popularity as a location
for regional operations. It is a city with a continuously prosperous job market.
Hong Kong has a fantastic mix of people. Its character is shaped by a unique fusion of Eastern
and Western cultures, where the old and the new live side by side. Visitors are impressed by the
many historic temples, its ultra-modern high-rise landscape, its range of intriguing and often noisy
festivals, and the party atmosphere of the many shopping and entertainment districts. For many
it’s the exotic fusion of Eastern and Western cuisines that attract and tempt. For others Hong
Kong provides a cultural bridge and is an ideal base for the exploration of Mainland China.

Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world. Don’t be fooled
by what you see in Hong Kong films! Hong Kong’s crime rate is
among the lowest of comparable size metropolitan cities around the
world. Even at night, you can walk with confidence, although normal
security precautionary measures should be followed.
Hong Kong upholds the freedom of religion and racial equality.
Different religions coexist peacefully in Hong Kong. These include
Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and
Judaism. All have a considerable number of followers and they are well protected by law. This is
also true for the diverse range of ethnic minority groups who call Hong Kong their home.
Hong Kong offers high quality affordable education and a lifestyle second to none. Degree
programmes are relatively cheaper than those in the West, and in many cases they are subsidized
by government. The cost of living in Hong Kong can be as high as one likes, but is generally more
affordable than similar cities around the world. There is a vast array of accommodation styles,
levels of shopping, and eateries that range from the 5-star exclusive to the dai pai dongs (street
cafe’s). Hong Kong has something to offer for everyone.
Hong Kong enforces policies in favor of international students. During their period of study,
non-local students studying a degree in Hong Kong are allowed to take up curriculum-related
internships which are endorsed by their universities, part-time employment on campus and
summer jobs. Upon graduation, international students can stay and explore work opportunities
for up to one year, and are eligible for the right of abode in Hong Kong after 7 years of continuous
ordinary residence (counting the period of study and employment).*

Due to its colonial history Hong Kong’s education system is closely modeled on that of the United
Kingdom.
Starting from 2009-2010, Hong Kong will adopt a new “334” academic structure and implement
a “New Senior Secondary” Curriculum. Under the new structure, there will be twelve years of
compulsory schooling in Hong Kong, six in primary school and six in secondary school.
The majority of students will have three years of kindergarten education (K1-K3)
before going to primary school. Students gain entry to a range of post-secondary,
vocational and tertiary courses offered by a variety of institutions based on
their results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (at the
end of F6).
Hong Kong also has an extensive range of international schools which
offer students a wide choice of education systems, and learning and
assessment styles. School attachments, internships and teaching
practices can be arranged in many of these schools for visiting or
international students. There are waiting lists for entry into many
international schools. Therefore, if you’re considering enrolling
your children while studying in Hong Kong, it is best to contact the
schools directly and the International Office at Hong Kong Institute
of Education for further advice.

· It Is a Secure and Safe Job even in times of Economic Recession. Today, 84% of Hong Kong’s primary school
teachers and 30% of secondary school teachers are graduates of HKIEd or its predecessor colleges of education. Over
99% of our graduates have found employment within the first few months of graduation. Currently, the monthly
salary of new graduates is approx. USD2,500. In times of economic downturn, teaching is one of the most stable

General DescriptionHKIEd was established in April 1994 and is the only tertiary education institution in Hong
Kong solely dedicated to teacher education. It became one of the eight government funded tertiary
institutions in 1996, and began enrolling students in its first Bachelor of Education degree in
1998. It achieved self-accrediting status in 2004 and commenced its Master of Education
programme and Doctor of Education programme in 2005 and 2007 respectively. In 2009 the first
International Executive Master of Arts programme was launched with planning well underway
for new Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor in Social Science degrees in 2010.
With HKSAR Government’s announcement in June 2009 and its endorsement of HKIEd’s
proposal to become an education-focused, research-strong multi-disciplinary tertiary institution,
HKIEd will steadfastly mobilize its resourses and energy to take forward its plan to become a
full-f ledged University of Education in the near future. Following this Government decision,
the HKIEd will be provided with an additional 120 first-year-first-degree and 30 research
postgraduate places for the 2009-2012 triennium. As it embarks on this new, exciting phase of
its development towards becoming a University of Education, HKIEd has also unveiled a new
Strategic Plan 2009-2012 and Beyond-“Planning for the Future, Making a Difference”, outlining

Learning Resources on CampusAt HKIEd we are fully committed to our strategic objective of promoting a teaching, learning
and research environment. Our resources and services are continuously being enhanced in order
to provide students and staff with the necessary support for achieving academic excellence and a
culture of life-long learning.
Apart from the central support of a Library running “24 hours a day, 7 days a week”, ‘state of
the art’ information technology and educational technology services are available for all students
and staff. Learning centres which specialize in languages, citizenship education, humanities and
social services as well as special needs and inclusive education provide services, share resources and
promote quality practice.
AccommodationWe believe hall life is an integral part of teacher training and tertiary education study. We aim
at providing a living-learning environment conducive to the personal and professional growth of
student residents. This is achieved through the provision of rich and diverse hall life education
programmes, well-maintained residential facilities and quality management services.
There are four student halls/quarters on Tai Po Campus, namely Northcote Hall, Grantham
Hall, Robert Black Hall and the Jockey Club Student Quarters, providing about 1,900 residential
places.
The Northcote Hall, Grantham Hall and Robert Black Hall provide shared twin study-
bedrooms and communal facilities include activity rooms, laundry rooms, and pantries. Each
study-bedroom is also equipped with computer ports and telephone sockets. The Jockey Club
Student Quarters comprise 7-person or 10-person f lats, each with single/double/triple bedrooms,
its own sitting/dining areas, terrace, kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms. A telephone line and
wireless computer facilities are also provided.
Due to the high demand for a place in student quarters, priority is given
to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, followed
by exchange and study abroad students, and students on short
term study visits.

International OfficeThe International Office (IO) of the HKIEd should be the first point of consultation for any
international student thinking of studying at HKIEd. The IO staff are trained and experienced.
They can provide advice, assistance and support on a wide variety of issues including the choice
of study destination, initial enrolment, visa applications, accommodation, study programmes (for
those on exchange or study abroad), international school attachments or internships in Hong
Kong, general travel information and cultural adaptation, and participation in the HKIEd host
family scheme. The IO staff are there to support individual international students and as such
students are encouraged to make good use of the services provided.

International students wishing to study at HKIEd can select from a broad range of degree
specializations at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Undergraduate Degrees and Specializations for International Students The academic rigour of the BEd (Honours) Degrees in discipline studies is on par with
that of other routes to teacher preparation, ie. a three-year Bachelor’s degree plus a one-year
Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), a “2+2” education degree or a four-year double
degree in education and an independant discipline.
The curriculum in the four-year BEd (Honours) Degrees consists of core components
accompanied by specialist components that meet the particular professional needs of different
groups of students. A significant emphasis is placed on general education, enabling students to
become both highly educated and cultured citizens.

∆ Only one year of residency can be guaranted for non-government funded non-local students
Students admitted to the Chinese Language or English Language programme will be required
to attend an Immersion Programme. This is a compulsory part of the degree which is heavily
subsidised by the Institute and by other sources of funding. However, students are required to
contribute part of the cost.

Interviews and Admission Results
All selected applicants for Bachelor of Education programmes are required to attend an
admission interview. Applicants choosing Early Childhood Education, English Language,
Music, Physical Education or Visual Arts programme will also be required to attend a subject
interview/practical test. Applicants for Bachelor of Music in Education (Contemporary Music
and Performance Pedagogy) programme may need to attend a Music practical test and subject
interview.
You will be informed of your application status, acknowledgement, interview arrangements, etc.,
via your personal e-mail. No letters will be posted to you except in very exceptional circumstances.
You are therefore expected to visit our website www.ied.edu.hk/degree/ regularly for interview
schedules and up-to-date admission information.
The selection process is normally completed by the end of August. Applicants who are not offered
admission by that date may assume their applications unsuccessful. No individual notifications

stated in your application. If you are a graduate from any of the Institute’s programmes in or
after 1995, you NEED NOT submit any copies of academic transcript(s) and certificate(s)
obtained at the Institute. You are, however, required to authorize the Institute to extract and
use your records of studies at the Institute to process your application.
Please do not send any original documents to the Institute under any circumstances as the
Institute will not be responsible for any mislaid documents. However, original documents of the
qualifications stated in the application must be presented for verification at registration. Failure
to do so shall lead to disqualification of the application and any offer made will be rescinded.
If you apply on-line, you are advised to upload the supporting documents direct on
http://www.ied.edu.hk/acadprog/online. Please mark your name, application number and
programme code at the top right hand corner of each page. Failure to do so may lead to some
delay in processing.
All supporting documents of unsuccessful applications will be destroyed at the end of the
admission exercise.
Application Fee (Subject to annual review)
International (non-local) applicants are required to pay an application fee of HK$300 which is
non-refundable and non-transferable unless the programme chosen has been cancelled by the
Institute.

You can pay the application fee using a credit card (Visa or MasterCard) through the Institute’s
On-line Application System: http://www.ied.edu.hk/io
Paper Application
You can pay the application fee by direct deposit or ATM transfer crediting the amount to
EITHER ONE of the following accounts:
(a) Account No. 267-170330-011 of the Hang Seng Bank; or
(b) Account No. 015-195-25-00003-9 of the Bank of East Asia.
Please mark your name on the original customer copy of the Deposit Slip or the ATM Advice
and stick it onto the application form. Please keep a photocopy of it as your proof of payment.
Applications will only be processed when the application fee is paid.
For international students not residing in Hong Kong, please
send us a Hong Kong dollar bank draft drawn on a bank in
Hong Kong and made payable to “The Hong Kong Institute
of Education”. Please do not send a personal cheque or cash.

Short term programmesavailable for international students

For international students there is also the option to participate in a range of short term, semester
or year-long international education opportunities. These include:
Exchange Programmes The HKIEd receives an increasing number of students from partner institutions for credit-
bearing semester or year-long academic exchanges. In exchange the HKIEd sends a reciprocal
number of students to the partner institution. The reciprocal nature of the exchange means that
tuition fees are waived. The subjects to be studied at HKIEd are pre-approved to ensure credit
transfer (if requested) to the home institution. All exchange students are issued with an official
academic transcript. The HKIEd also increasingly hosts a range of academic and administrative
staff for different periods of professional exchange.
Study Abroad Programmes Designed for students with a specific interest, the HKIEd receives students for short term,
semester or year-long study. Unlike exchange, students on study abroad have greater choice of
study destination and programme. In many cases students on longer study abroad programmes
defer studies from their home institution to study at HKIEd. Students on study abroad pay
international student fees for the modules that they study at HKIEd.
International Study Tours The International Office and Faculties regularly host short-term international study tours from
groups of international students, academics and administrators to broaden their exposure to a
wide range of cultural, social, educational and professional experiences. These groups pre-arrange
their trips with the respective HKIEd host. Accommodation in the HKIEd’s hostels may be
available but is subject to availability –advance booking is essential.
Internships, School Attachments, Teaching Practice These experience-based opportunities are normally conducted in Hong Kong’s international
and/or local schools and can be arranged through negotiation with IO staff. Depending on the
requirements of the specific activity there may be associated costs. These schools are more than
happy to accommodate such placements in conjunction with academic study at HKIEd; however,
planning needs to be done early.
