PREMIER’S OVERSEAS TRAVEL OUTCOME REPORT

TRAVEL DETAILS DEPARTURE DATE 7 August 2016 Return Date 16 August 2016

DESTINATIONS (COUNTRY/IES) INDIA; CHINA

The business mission to India focused on advancing key relationships with government and business associations, supporting business delegates on the mission, promoting South Australia’s credentials as a great place to live, work, study and do business in, and leading discussions with potential investors. My travel to China focused on finalising arrangements for the inbound mission in September to coincide with the Royal Adelaide Show, attending the collaboration between the Festival of Arts and the Qingdao Beer Festival, and meeting with key Chinese officials. INDIA – 7 – 12 AUGUST 2016 The South Australian Government led a delegation of 71 people from 55 businesses on this mission to India. Companies from the sectors of defence and advanced manufacturing, water and environmental management, health, higher education and skills and training, premium food and wine, and sports, tourism and culture joined the mission. A survey of delegates on the India mission reported establishing in excess of 450 new business connections and over 115 export leads with a potential export value of $65 million. During this mission, a number of key initiatives were advanced:

Launch of the South Australia Club in Mumbai – which establishes a new outpost for our network of South Australian influencers. The Club brings together people committed to advancing South Australia’s interests in India and identifying opportunities for export, investment, and growth of the State’s international profile.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the South Australian Water Industry Alliance and the Triveni Water Institute, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), to provide a platform for water industry engagement.

An MoU between Flinders University and Amity University was signed for collaboration across a broad range of study and research topics, and student and teacher exchange programs. Amity University is one of the largest private universities in India with approximately 125,000 students attending widely distributed campuses, including Jaipur in our Sister State of Rajasthan.

An MoU between the Government of South Australia and the Government of Rajasthan was signed for establishment of the Rajasthan Centre of Excellence in Water and Resource Management.

Relationships with the defence sector, aerospace sector and the nuclear sector were developed in Bangalore.

During this visit, I met with Indian companies that offer South Australia opportunities for commercial engagement:

Hinduja Group, Sutherland Global, Reliance Defence Limited, Tata Consultancy Services, Aditya Birla Group, Apeejay Surrendra Group, Moser Baer Solar, HCL Ltd, Sterling & Wilson, IL&FS Energy Development and Amity University.

I also met with Indian government officials in defence, commerce and industry, public health, water management, and education to discuss government-to-government collaboration.

CHINA – 13 – 16 AUGUST 2016 During my visit to China, I travelled to Beijing and Qingdao and met with representatives from both the Australian and China Governments:

Met with Austrade officials regarding current Australian Government activity in China and opportunities for South Australia’s premium products and services.

Visited the Haier Group, at the invitation of the Qingdao Government, to showcase Qingdao’s icon and to be briefed on Qingdao’s manufacturing industry and economic development.

Met with the newly appointed Vice Mayor of Qingdao, responsible for overseas affairs. Attended ‘Adelaide Night’ at the Royal Adelaide Club installation at the Qingdao Beer

Festival, toured the site and participated in the launch of ‘South Aussie with Cosi’ in China – to advance the State’s profile in the region.
