“Let’s try to avoid getting ourselves intodebts and buying things we can’t afford”,said Mr. Seile Letsogo: Deputy DirectorConsumer Affairs within the Departmentof Economic Development, Environment,Conservation and Tourism.Letsogo was addressing community mem
bers, government employees, NGO’s, municipalities and youth structures duringConsumer Protection Workshop at HuhudiHome Based Care in Vryburg.
The purpose of the workshop was to educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities and to encourage communitymembers to visit consumer affairs office inthe province to resolve queries and for ad
vice.“Our people are paying funeral insurances
without knowing the services they are paying for. It’s important for consumers to exercise caution when signing contracts, consumers must carefully read and understandthe terms as there might have adverse consequences and should not be discouragedfrom reading voluminous documents written in small print as these may compromisetheir rights”, said Mr. Letsogo.Letsogo enlightened the participants that
once the debt is referred to attorneys theymust stop paying at the shops rather consultwith Consumer Office to verify if the information is correct because not every debt ispayable.
Consumers were also advised on issuesto consider when buying motor vehicles, whether second hand or new.Mr Luscious Bodibe from the Motor Industry Ombudsman highlighted that consumersshould always consult with relevant institutions before contracting.“When a consumer has bought a vehicle
and within 6 months notices defects on it,the consumer can go back to the dealershipand is entitled to ask the supplier to replace, repair or refund him”. Bodibe said. This isa right envisaged in terms of the ConsumerProtection Act where consumers are afforded an implied warranty for six months. Hefurther advised participants not to take carsfrom dealerships without number plates or
any other parts on delivery. The Department will continue with aware
ness programme around the province tomake consumers aware of the unscrupulouspractises during the festive season.
