structure of other fiction books
• The skills you learned from realistic fiction units and character study apply!!
Texts You Will Read• Read Aloud book: “the Lightning Thief”• Handouts that compliment our read
aloud book• Your independent reading books • Copies of Greek or Roman Mythology
short texts from Ms. Tu.– They will also be used as mentor texts or
models for our reading unit: Writing our own original myth story!
Our Focus• In this unit, we will focus on two very
important skills in reading Fantasy or any other fiction books:
1. Envisioning
2. Interpretation
What is Fantasy?• Read to find out!!
• In your independent reading today, I want you to discover as many things as possible about “Fantasy” books.
• What can we find about the fantasy books we read that are unique to this genre? What elements does Fantasy share with other types of fiction books?

Collage Assignment• You have until next Friday (1/15/10)• Find pictures and words cutouts from
magazines, newspapers , Internet, etc.• Put them together to make your “Fantasy
