What Kind of Challenges Do We Face in ND Engineering Work?

• We are charged with Designing, Procuring, Assembling, Commissioning and Operating

Experiments on the Neutrino Campus as well as PAB and PC4

• Note: Portions of the team are supporting LBNF Cryo (DOE) as well as the specialized

needs of ProtoDUNE electrical engineering.

• Neutrino Division is responsible for Neutrino Campus and which requires staff to support

technical challenges that Collaborations need assistance in designing/building/operating their

detectors while meeting FNAL ESH&Q requirements.

• We have large staff of people in Ops Group who are interface/liasions between Division

management and the experiments. This includes many who hold job titles that are notengineers/engineering physicists.

Technical Challenges We Face

Talking specifically about LAr Detector Engineering…

• Besides thermodynamic stability as related to traditional issues of pressure and temperature,

LAr experiments require high purity of the LAr volume. Typical requirements specify oxygen

and water purity levels to much less than 100 part per trillion.

• One event which leads to introducing air into the LAr volume can end the experiment or lead

to very costly venting of LAr volume and re-fill. No effective/affordable mechanism to

remove nitrogen in 10’s of ppm level, for example.

• Mechanical Assembly/Integration

• Significant efforts to lead the mechanical design and integration of experimental needs for LAr Detectors. Work load including significant FEA for mechanical load, stress analysis being common. 3D modeling.

• Electrical engineering efforts are key from design stage to operations specifically focused on

grounding and noise issues. Critical to performance of detector and physic’s results.

• The Division is beginning to address specialty needs in High Voltage (HV), noise, grounding and other LAr specific technical areas with an aim to build a dedicated EE group (engineers to technicians).

Other Challenges We Face …

• The Neutrino Division work is focusing heavily on Short Baseline Program which is a

international Collaborative effort. This will result in two (2) new neutrino detectors: SBN-FD

(ICARUS) and SBND.

• Work includes shared deliverables for cryostats, cryogenic systems, process controls as well

as mechanical design and integration of detector components across various institutions who

are delivering specific detector technologies.

• Our work in the category of cryogenics and cryostats for LAr detectors requires us to be

tightly coupled to Collaboration’s physicists and is one reason to have dedicated engineering

resources for LAr cryogenics within ND. Many deliverables from institutions are required to

meet very strict standards for acceptance at FNAL. Our systems are less of a cryogenic

utility and more a critical component of the detector (see LAr volume).

• Significant efforts by ND and FNAL overall to address Codes and Standards issues in various

areas such as structural, mechanical, cryogenic and electrical disciplines. Effort is on-going

to meet the needs of understanding International standards and their equivalency (or not) to

FNAL requirements.

Engineering Physicist Disciplines – Varies Across LAr Engineering and TSD/Operations

At this moment we have four (4) Engineering Physicists in ND/TSD

• Subject-matter-expert in area of detector electrical engineering, from design to full operations support

Systems Integration engineer specializing in low noise AC/DC Distribution systems and the Grounding and shielding of electronics systems. (See Linda Bagby)

• Oversight of Technical staff support of the Neutrino campus, PC4, PAB activities. (See Aria Soha)

Coordinate Technician support for all ND projects & Experiments

Involves working with Engineers & Scientists to best match the right technician to the job.

Comment: Includes negotiating with other divisions (TD, PPD, and AD) to borrow Techs to best meet needs

• SBND Engineering Systems Support (See Min Jeong Kim)

Systems Engineering [SBND System Interface Manager]

Applied Engineering (System Integration and Management)

Engineering Management [SBND L2 Cryostat Manager]

• Experiment Liaison Officer (See Cindy Joe)

ND Liaison for NOvA and the secondary/deputy ELO for MicroBooNE, interfacing between the experiments and the lab’s resources along with the rest of the ND Operations Support Group.

Manage the MINOS Underground Areas, which includes aspects outside the experiments pertaining to the facility itself.

Engineering Disciplines Are Split Between Mechanical and Electrical Needs

At this moment we have eleven Engineers in ND/TSD/LAr Detector Engineering;nine (9) fulltime and two (2) contract engineers

Two flavors of Electrical Engineering: 1. Detector implementation for DAQ, Slow controls, grounding and noise requirements/issues2. Cryogenic process controls and the integration of such into LAr detectors(See EP Linda Bagby and EE Trevor Nichols)

Two flavors of Mechanical engineering:1. Statics/dynamics traditions which allow for design, assembly of Neutrino detectors and their

sub-assemblies. Mechanical design and integration Structural topics for cryostats, time projection chambers, lifting of structures

(See Andy Stefanik, Shishir Shetty, John Belle and Eduardo Mejia Ramos)

2. Fluids/thermodynamics with focus on liquid argon cryogenics andits specialties of purity requirements and long term stability.Includes all phases of LAr cryogenics from design, procure, assembly and operations.

(See Michael Geynisman, Mike Zuckerbrot, Roza Doubnik, Fritz Schwartz, Kathrine Cipriano)

Design and Drafting

At this moment we have two (2) designers within ND/TSD

We are heavy on mechanical design needs within ND/TSD. This is driven by this ‘season’ of work by the SBN

Program which requires two new LAr detectors in the next couple years.

Mechanical Designer (See Justin Tillman)

Supporting SBN-FD (Far Detector aka ‘ICARUS’)

Responsible for Integration Modeling for all aspects of detector and while working with FNAL, CERN

and INFN collaborators

Mechanical Designer (See Steve Hentschel)

Supporting SBND (Near Detector)

Responsible for Integration Modeling for all aspects of detector and while working with FNAL, CERN and

many other non-DOE partners

Mechanical drafting needs for Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) are done via LBNF Far Site

Division drafter. (See Mike Delaney)

Electrical drafting needs are done by ND engineer/engineering physicist as well as using PPD drafting

personnel.

Examples of Cross-Divisional

• Most of LAr Detector Engineering Group resides in BEG or trailers to west of BEG. We

share office space with both PPD Mechanical Support and LBNF Far Site Division engineers.

This leads to strong working relationship in the systems we are building as well as

discussions which foster strong safety awareness for ND experiments as well as future

LBNF/DUNE.

• SBN Program is using PPD process controls group (Dan Markley led) coupled to our own

Electrical engineer (Trevor Nichols) to build the systems for cryogenic controls that span

FNAL, INFN and CERN deliverables.

• Strong electrical engineering relationship with PPD EE folks with operating systems like

MicroBooNE.

• Service on safety panels for peer review of Lab’s other work.

• Common exchange of technical staff to accomplish goals of ND (AD, PPD, TD)
