OVERVIEW OF THE AUDIO ARTS INDUSTRIES Video Biographies Mike Conner (Moderator, Film Researcher and Music Performer) Mike Conner studied musical performance (piano and vocal) at University of South Florida and the Berklee College of Music. His educational resume also includes a MS in Education from Peru State in Nebraska, a BS in Education from the University of South Florida and an AS in Film from Full Sail University. Over the last 20 years, Mike has taught music and history at all levels, from middle school to university courses. He has continued to play music professionally over the last 25 years. He is a passionate music fan and collector, with an encyclopedic knowledge of 20th Century popular music, specializing on the careers of the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Mike is a credited film researcher and investigator, allowing the privilege of transcribing the earliest surviving script of Citizen Kane and analyzing Orson Welles’ handwritten comments. His work was credited in the biography, “Despite the System: Orson Welles Versus the Hollywood Studios.” Dave Dean (Audio Department Chair, Show Production) Dave has been instructing Full Sail students for over 15 years. A leader among the Show Production & Touring staff, Dave has been a key member in the development of the program curriculum. He continues to work in the industry, and while not on campus he works as an engineer in the field. Dave’s freelance work includes engineering for K.C. & the Sunshine Band and Jon Secada. Derrick Harvin (Engineer / Producer / Songwriter) Derrick Harvin joined Full Sail University in 2003 as a Lab Specialist for the Recording Arts degree program, teaching labs for Song Craft, Audio Workstations, and MIDI. In 2005, Derrick left Full Sail University to further his career as a producer/songwriter. Since that time, Derrick has wrote, produced, arranged, and engineered projects for 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Hilary Duff, Chaka Khan, Phil Perry, Howard Hewett, Natasha Bedingfield, Kara DioGuardi, Kevin Cossom, and Erly Thornton. With nearly 15 years of experience in studios and music production, Derrick has drawn clients with his ability to wear multiple hats - as a live and studio musician, songwriter, producer, engineer, editor, A&R, and artist developer. Such clients will include, The Virginia Lottery, Universal Records, Interscope Records, RCA/Jive Records, Hollywood Records, Music Choice, Disney, and Wonderland Creative Group. In September 2012, Derrick returned to Full Sail University as the Course Director of Digital Recording Principles for the Music Production Bachelor of Science degree program. Video Biographies

Mike Conner (Moderator, Film Researcher and Music Performer)

Mike Conner studied musical performance (piano and vocal) at University of South Florida and the Berklee College of Music. His educational resume also includes a MS in Education from Peru State in Nebraska, a BS in Education from the University of South Florida and an AS in Film from Full Sail University.

Over the last 20 years, Mike has taught music and history at all levels, from middle school to university courses. He has continued to play music professionally over the last 25 years. Derrick Harvin (Engineer / Producer / Songwriter)

Derrick Harvin joined Full Sail University in 2003 as a Lab Specialist for the Recording Arts degree program, teaching labs for Song Craft, Audio Workstations, and MIDI. In 2005, Derrick left Full Sail University to further his career as a producer/songwriter. Since that time, Derrick has wrote, produced, arranged, and engineered projects for 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Hilary Duff, Chaka Khan, Phil Perry, Howard Hewett, Natasha Bedingfield, Kara DioGuardi, Kevin Cossom, and Erly Thornton.

Veit Renn (Sound Engineer / Music Producer)

As a Multiplatinum Producer with over 60 million records sold, Veit has 20 years recording, mixing, producing, and writing songs for some of the most successful artists in the music industry. Having worked with N-Sync, Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Hudson, and many others, he brings a well-rounded, real-life aspect to the Music Production degree program.

In addition to his talents as a producer and songwriter, Veit also is an accomplished engineer, mixing records in multiple genres: Jazz, Pop, R&B, and Rock. He was the co-owner of RMP Studios Inc., located in Orlando, Florida and continues to work on projects with various artists and has started his own label called “Celerity Records” featuring artists Crystal Starr Knighton, Jesse Stevenson, Eugene Wilde, and CEO SILKK. Veit was signed to Universal Music Publishing as a songwriter and now teaches Advanced Audio Production Techniques at Full Sail University.

Keith Lay (Composer)

Today’s working composer is much more than an artist of sound: they also require professional-level skills in software technology, audio engineering, communication, business and all popular music. Keith Lay is an example of today's modern composer.

Keith's success in the concert hall is reflected in winning international competitions and rave reviews from the New York Times, Gramophone Magazine, and others hailing him as “a composer to watch for.” His symphonic, electronic, and chamber music is performed across the country and Europe. In commercial music, Keith was a leading Synclavier Producer in the late 1980s, and continues to be an award-winning producer of commercial music for a long national client list, including multimedia, soundtracks, jingles, theme parks, and live corporate shows. As an engineer, Keith's credits include international releases for classical and jazz releases and he is a voting member of the Grammy’s. He has also provided liner notes for various CD releases.

Keith began teaching Moog Series 55 large analog synthesizers, Music Fundamentals, Introduction to Music Theory, and Music Theory I classes at the University of Akron. After joining the Full Sail faculty in 1990 to teach Synclavier workstations, he created the Music History course and textbook, has won the coveted Top Gun prize three times at Full Sail University. A leader in curriculum design for several courses in the Audio programs, Keith is the Department Chair of Music Technology for the Music Production degree program.

Mike Orlowski, M.P.S.E. (Post Production)

Michael Orlowski is a Supervising Sound Editor and Re-Recording mixer. Specializing in sound effects, Michael has provided custom created sounds for numerous film, TV, and large format productions in Los Angeles and Orlando. He serves as the Dubbing Stage Engineer at Full Sail University, where he oversees a world-class post sound facility, and is a board member of the Motion Picture Sound Editors.

Shawn McKeown (Lighting and Visual Productions Department Chair, Show Production)

Shawn McKeown is the Department Chair for Lighting and Visual Productions in the Show Production Bachelor of Science degree program. Shawn initially joined Full Sail in 1997, and returned in 2004 to lead the Show Light Engineering course for the Show Production degree program. During his time at Full Sail, Shawn has also served as Lighting Designer for many productions held on campus, as well as contributing to the production lighting design for the Full Sail Live venue.

Prior to returning to Full Sail, Shawn worked as a freelance lighting designer based in the Orlando, Florida area. Throughout his professional career, Shawn has served as a Lighting Technician, Automated Lighting Programmer, and Lighting Designer for concert tours, television productions, and corporate events. Shawn’s resume includes work with artists and events such as Sevendust, P.O.D., Good Charlotte, and World Championship Wrestling.

Jeremy Burnum (Audio Workstations Course Director, Project Studio Engineer)

Jeremy Burnum is currently the Course Director of Audio Workstations at Full Sail University. He is an accomplished pianist, composer, engineer, and producer. He spent many of his younger years teaching piano as well as orchestrating and composing for local high school bands. It wasn’t until receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bethany College, KS in K-12 vocal and instrumental education, that he discovered the science of music production with digital audio workstations.

Since then, Jeremy has spent over 20 years crafting digital audio productions with many different computer-based production systems, most notably Pro Tools. With numerous positions as staff engineer at several major local studios, he has developed and crafted the arts of production in many different genres.

Charley Webb, IV (Mastering Course Director, Live Sound, and Studio Engineer)

Charley Webb joined the Full Sail University family back in 2007 and is currently the Course Director of Digital Mastering. He brings continued professional and hands-on experience from the world of mastering and live audio.

Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, Charley’s talents do not rest solely as a well sought-after mastering engineer; he was raised around music and has played guitar, mandolin, bass, and piano for just over 20 years. He currently performs locally with a few bands and will often travel back to his roots to entertain his hometown locals with his talents.

Charley has completed over 200 mastering projects in his career, and many have been for major record labels. He is also the owner of Low Country Sound, LLC and is often contracted to run sound for large festivals and bands.

David Nielsen (Commercial Composer)

David James Nielsen was born in 1977 in Calgary in the Canadian province of Alberta, and entered the musical world playing piano at age 6. He began composing at the age of 15 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Calgary. From 1997 to 2003, David served as Composer in Residence at Calgary’s Pleiades Theatre/Vertigo Mystery Theatre, where he scored numerous theatrical plays. In 2003, David earned a graduate certificate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California, where he was honored with the Harry Warren Scholarship Award. His teachers there included Academy Award nominee David Raksin, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Christopher Young, Jack Smalley, and Grammy Award winner Joe Harnell.

As a composer, David has scored or provided music for such films as Reclaiming the Blade(documentary), Dated (short film), Tall Ships: The Privateer Lynx (documentary),Shenanigans (short film), Shoelace (short film), A Timeless Journey (short film), Tales FromBeyond (feature film), Haunting Villisca (feature film), Overlap (short film), The Big Table(short film), and The Little Documentary that Couldn’t (feature film), as well as for the syndicated television series Animal Exploration With Jarod Miller. David also has worked in various roles ranging from music score programmer and orchestrator, to additional composer. Some of these titles include the TV series Star Trek: Enterprise (music score programmer), the television movies Silent Witness (music score programmer), The Tenth Circle (music score programmer, orchestrator), Flight 93 (music score programmer), Faith of my Fathers (music score programmer, additional composer), and the National Geographic/PBS Special Eden at the End of the World (additional composer).

Don Rogozinski (Engineer / Audio Postproduction / Performer)

Don’s background includes experience as a musician, music producer, recording engineer, mix engineer, audio postproduction engineer, Pro Tools operator, and music industry educator. Don has performed music professionally for over 30 years in a variety of genres including jazz, big band, salsa, merengue, classical, top 40, R&B, soul, funk, reggae and others. He has been the Course Director of both Producing and Artist Development in the Music Business Bachelor of Science, and Associate Course Director of Songcraft (music theory) and Audio Post Production in Recording Arts at Full Sail University.

Don’s accomplished career as a trumpet performer includes playing with artists such as Chayanne, Jimmy Buffett, Big Bopper Jr., Joe Williams, and others. Don also recorded trumpet on N-Sync's Christmas album, “Home for Christmas.”

Don’s engineering credits include many projects such as: Jennifer Hudson, Dru Hill, N-Sync, Backstreet Boys, Aaron Carter, Mickey Mouse Club, Disney Entertainment, Disney Cruise Line, Disney's Very Merry Christmas Parade, Passenger 57, and several voice-over projects for multi-media, books, radio and TV.

Mark Johnson (Program Manger – Show Production)

Mark Johnson is the Program Manager for the Show Production Bachelor of Science degree program. Mark has over thirty years of experience in live and broadcast audio mixing as well as touring and fixed installation sound system design and operation.

In his early years at Opryland USA starting in 1977, Mark served as technical coordinator, sound designer, and mixing engineer for the theme park. In 1987, he joined Meyer Sound Laboratories and worked as technical sales support manager and director of sales and marketing, offering him a broad perspective of the live production industry. Through Meyer Sound’s official sponsorship of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Mark provided contract negotiation, system design and installation, crew management, and press and media coverage for the event.

Mark then entered the industry magazine field in 2003. He managed production, contracted writers, and determined editorial scheduling for two publications until 2009. During his tenure as editor of Sound & Video Contractor Magazine, the magazine was awarded a 2004 Gold Eddie Award. Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Expanded Cinema from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Stephen Cox (Commercial Composer)

Stephen Cox is a composer, songwriter and sound designer. Based in the Orlando, Florida area, he creates, produces, and licenses music for television, feature films, and multimedia. His music can be heard regularly on CBS Sports, Discovery Channel, various reality shows, as well as documentaries, commercials, and feature films. His musical style has to be as versatile as the industry demands; however, rock, techno, and orchestral genres are his specialty. Stephen has over a decade of experience in sound editing, sound design, ADR, foley and 5.1 mixing.

Stephen graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor’s in Music Synthesis in 2002. He then began work in Audio Post Production for TV and Film in Orlando, Florida, while simultaneously working remotely for Cakewalk Music Software doing online support and beta testing. Stephen began teaching part time at Full Sail in 2003 while pursuing freelance work and holding down his position at Cakewalk.

In 2008, he took time off from Full Sail to pursue freelance work full time and to be there for his newborn son. As of January 2012, he is back at Full Sail University as Course Director for Music Production for Media in the Music Production degree program.
