History of UCP

● UCP was established in 1992○ This year is our 25th Anniversary!○ Some of our programs pre-date us!

● What’s in a name?○ UCAR Programs○ UCAR Office of Programs (UOP)○ UCAR Community Programs (UCP)

● 158 on-site + 118 off-site = 276 staff

● ~$50M annual operating budget○ NOAA - 41%○ NSF- 38 %○ NASA - 8.25%○ DoD - 4.25%○ University Collaborations - 2.12%

UCP programs are more service-oriented than research oriented, focusing on education, training, data delivery, science services, scientist exchange, and innovative observational systems.

COSMIC: Supports University Research on Weather, Climate and Ionosphere

● Established in 1997● Primary funders: NSF,

Taiwan’s NSPO, NASA, NOAA, USAF

● 6 satellites launched in 2006● 11+ years of operation● 6.6M+ RO profiles made● 3,300+ researchers & 90

countries us

POC: Bill [email protected]

Our Offerings:● Radio Occultation data freely available to researchers and

students alike

● COSMIC-2 Mission will produce valuable data for weather and climate processes research in tropics, leading to better cyclone predictions

GPS/GNSS Radio Occultation (RO)

● Pioneered by NASA/JPL in the 1960’s● Radio signals sent from one GNSS satellite

to another in low Earth orbit are bent by planet’s atmosphere

● Amount of bending tells us the temperature & water vapor in the lower atmosphere and electron density in the ionosphere
