Mission
Accomplished
That’s the only thing I could think of after the convention. The best way to describe the convention from my point of view, would be like having
your three biggest auctions EVER, back to back to back. After the convention, I was exhausted and also felt that the mission had been accomplished.
A big thank you goes out to John Schultz, Jason Winter, Greg Peterson, Scott Shuman, and Justin Ochs - as all the speakers did an outstanding job presenting an abundance of real world experience and information. I hope you could attend and take away a few ideas that will make you and your business better for the coming year.
I would also like to thank the board of directors. Each one had several tasks to accomplish throughout the weekend and they did them seamlessly. I can tell you there are a lot of similarities between planning an auction event and planning a convention. Just like a successful auction, the key to a successful convention takes several months of planning, logistics, marketing, and having an excellent team. None of this could take place without the help and teamwork of the board of directors.
It seems the convention ran smoothly, but I understand there is always room for improvement. If you have an idea or saw something that could be improved upon, let us know. Matt McWhirter, 2018 Convention Planning Chair, is open to suggestions on how to make the 2018 convention even better. The convention survey is now closed, but we are always interested in your comments. Please contact Matt with your suggestions.
As stated during the 2017 board member meeting on February 5, the IAA board is moving forward on a new website and new logo, the by-laws will also be reviewed. The board has divided up the tasks and those assignments are to be presented at the April board meeting for review by the entire board.
Thanks again for making our 2017 convention a success!

Times, They Are A Changing
by: Justin Mason
Hello folks! I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am Justin Mason, I have been granted the distinct honor of being elected to the Iowa Auctioneers Association Board of Directors. For those of you who don’t know me, I am a fi rst-generation auctioneer from the beautiful little town of Odebolt Iowa. I, along with my
cousin Chris Mason, am the co-owner of Mason Auctions. My beautiful wife Lacy and I also run a row crop farming operation and trucking business, along with a small scale commercial hop farm known as Hope Avenue Hops. To say we are busy is an understatement! But my heart is still devoted to our auction business.
As auctioneers, we are tasked with the job of doing our best for our clients, and getting the highest price possible for their merchandise. The auction method had evolved greatly from the days of the “live” only auction. When we started our business back in April of 2015 we kept that evolution in mind. Although the live auction method is still preferred by most, I, along with everyone reading this, am probably noticing a change in the industry. There are becoming more and more auction methods available these days; live only, live and online simulcast, and online only auctions. Each auction is unique, from marketing, to planning, to execution. The tools available to us as auctioneers today are vast. By implementing these tools in our day to day business, it allows us to reach far and beyond our regular buyer base, and that is the name of the game.
In early 2016, we began using the live and online simulcast method of auctions. The results were excellent, to say the least. It allowed us to bring the buyers in from all over the
globe, which in turn, puts our sellers merchandise in front of an infi nite number of people. We have now started doing regular on-line only auctions, which I’m sure many of you are too. The use of this invaluable tool allows us as auction professionals, to market any form of merchandise to the exact buyer base that we need to have a successful auction. Let’s face it, some things just sell better in certain areas. By using the online auction platform, we can reach those areas with ease.
I will be the fi rst to admit that I was skeptical about doing online only auctions. Although I am still a huge proponent of the live auction method, there are just some circumstances where the online only auction is a perfect fi t. Whether it is, for example, a small estate, or for a unique line of collectibles, or to sell several items from several diff erent locations all at once. We have been using the online only platform for a monthly 1/64th scale farm toy auction. We have found that selling the 1/64th scale models at our live auctions was not exactly the best fi t. But we have been able to increase our selling price by off ering them online only.
Times, they are a changing. By utilizing the tools that we have available, it ensures that the auction method of marketing will be around for generations to come.
I would like to thank all of you for your continued support and membership to the Iowa Auctioneers Association, and I am extremely excited about serving all of you as a member of the board of directors!

On February 4, 2017, the association inducted Burton Prunty of Allerton, IA into the Iowa Auctioneers Hall of Fame. Burton is a fi rst-generation auctioneer. He graduated from the Missouri Auction School in the fall of 1963. He has been auctioneering ever since.
Linda, his wife of 48 years, had known about it since last December. But it was a Christmas gift she could not present to Burton until February. “I could tell by his face he was surprised,” Linda said. “It was a fun time.” Burton and Linda have been married since New Years Day of 1969. He and Linda raised four sons, Scott, Brent, Justin, and Tim. They are now working with him in his auction business in Allerton, Iowa.
Prunty is very community oriented and loves doing benefi t auctions for churches, fi re victims, 4-H auctions, the Association of Fairs conference, school PTA’s, Pheasants Forever, the Turkey Federation, and many more.
Prunty is an IAA Past President (2013), a past IAA board member. He is an IAA member, belongs to the Missouri Auctioneers Association, and the NAA. He holds a Realtor license in both Iowa and Missouri.
Prunty thanked his wife for all of her support over the years. “It was very humbling,” Prunty said.

One of Burton’s infl uences on the IAA is the implementation of professional training.
When asked about his future in auctioneering, Burton said simply, “I’ll be 72.” “We’ll just have a sale once in a while,” Linda added. “I’d like to do a little more traveling if I could ever get him out of here.”

On March 6, the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) welcomed more than 50 people from across the United States representing at least two dozen state auctioneer associations to the State Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. This event gives us the opportunity to hear diff erent views from state leaders about what is happening all
over the country.
This kind of representation is what your state association is all about – whether it is representation of your concerns and challenges to the NAA, to your state legislatures, or to your potential clients. NAA recognizes the importance of your state association leadership and hopes that the programs that we off er during the State Leadership Conference help strengthen your association.
In the auction industry, the state associations do not require you to be a member of national, and vice versa. All state associations, like the Iowa Auctioneer Association (IAA), are totally autonomous from the NAA.
Having said that, I think we all believe we can be stronger together if we all are moving in the same direction. Since being named Chief Executive Offi cer of the NAA, almost nine years ago, I have been to 20 state associations. Some have been very small and some have been large, but all have one thing in common: successful auction professionals who specialize in various assets that are absolutely passionate about this industry and about the organizations in which they participate.
Often, I am asked which state association is the best one that we work with? And what makes them so good? Honestly, this sounds like political mumbo jumbo but it is the truth – those that are good have highly engaged members, work hard to meet those needs, and also work hard to foster their community. NAA is no diff erent. We work hard to determine what your needs are and how to meet those needs and we work hard to foster our community. But IAA nor the NAA can do it alone. As an IAA member, don’t just be a member, be an engaged member! Volunteer to run for the board, be on a committee, write an article for your newsletter, or even to welcome people at your next event.
I hear people often talk about the NAA and their state associations in a third voice “I can’t believe what the NAA is doing?” “Did you hear that the Iowa Auctioneers Association is wanting to do?” The NAA is not the staff at headquarters. It is not our board of directors. The IAA is not the staff or their board of directors, either.
YOU, the members, are the IAA and the NAA.
So please, don’t be a mailbox member. Get involved. See what is happening on your state level. Give them your opinion. Give them your talents. After all, it is your organization.
