Digipak annotationThese guitars are stereotypical to the genre and to digipaks of this genre as it represents what music will be played on this album. We used this because the other pictures (apart from the bottom left) don’t give much info on the music genre.

This shows the two band members from a different angle and they are looking at the camera. The clothes are fairly ‘indie’ which goes with the basic conventions to this particular genre of music.

Shows the members of the band and the instruments which band members play. Simple conformation to the conventions of an indie/rock band.

Back cover features the track list in black writing which itself is a convention of it’s genre. Also has the barcode in the corner.

Shows the band members and the record label. Old fashioned/rough looking background, which conforms to the roots in which most rock groups come from.

Magazine Advert Annotation

Basic image of band which replicates the album cover but with a different effect. Also with record label in corner.

Writing made to look under a spotlight like most bands would be during a show. Shows it’s a fresh, new group. The use of black and white writing conforms to rock groups as they’re often seen in black clothes (e.g. leather jackets, black jeans).

Magazine adverts are primarily used to sell the product and in this case, the album is being sold by attractive tag lines and quotes from famous sources. This will attract the audience if they enjoy the magazine.

This is similar to other famous artists and is a good indication that it is worth buying for the audience. This convention is one that is used for almost all magazine adverts and not just for albums and soundtracks.

STILL 1.

This still features an obvious , yet effective, convention of the genre. The music studio is often involved in pop/rock music videos and is an easy way to show what type of band it is. It shows that they are dedicated and have had to learn instruments to be able to perform the music. Music studio’s are shown in music videos as they are showing performance and it can make it easier for the audience to understand the narrative and pace of the song.

STILL 2.

This still features elements of the album cover and is featuring the lead singer and a brick wall, the same brick wall as the album cover; which forms a direct link between the album and its tracks. Often on music albums, they feature elements of the album cover in the videos and this convention is used to show its an iconic part of the album. We used a medium to close up of the artist to show more emotion of the artist.

STILL 3.

This still conveys a more performance orientated part of the video. It shows the development of practice and then a more advanced practice of the performance. The light is to replicate that of which would be present in a real performance or gig. The shot is a medium shot so that we could fit in the singer and the drummer as they are the band members but to also show that the blue light is key to the shot and therefore in the middle.

STILL 4.

Close up of the lead singer is to show more emotion (like still 2) but this is a rotating shot so it gives sense of surroundings and body language. The remote location indicates individuality to the band and that they are different to the others of the genre.

STILL 5.

This still is similar to ‘still 8’ in the way that it is shown to add reality to the performance. We wanted to show the audience that the performance was rehearsed and the fact that the drumming was done so well made it a more key feature of the video.

STILL 6.

This is the opposite shot to ‘still 1’ and was used to show the different angles of the performance in the music studio. This also gives a better view of the image of the band and how we wanted to be seen. We did this because we felt it gave a strong indication of how we wanted to convey to the genre and we tried to address this by choosing black and white clothes as they are predominantly used by rock bands.

STILL 7.

This technique was originally going to be used for green screening but we felt it would be effective on it’s own as it was a serious shot but something different to the other shots in the video. When looked at we also felt that it was not something that many videos feature and it fitted well with the music. Conventionally the only real feature that conforms to the genre would be the clothes and facial expression which is shown in the medium shot.

STILL 8.

This still is a close up of the main singer in the music studio and I picked this as one of the stills because it features a close up of the microphone. As a convention this can say a lot to an audience as it adds reality to the performance whereas some shots only featured the singer without any props.
