IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS

WARNING: A risk of fire and electrical shock exists in all electrical appliances and maycause personal injury or death.

When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed,including the following:

1. Read all instructions before using the kitchen machine.2. To protect against risk of electric shock, do not put the drive unit in or under water or

other liquid.3. This appliance is not for use by children.4. Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used near children.5. Do not leave appliances unattended during operation.6. Unplug from outlet when not in use, before putting on or taking off parts, and

before cleaning.7. To disconnect: switch appliance off then remove plug from power supply.8. Avoid contacting moving parts. Keep hands, hair, clothing, as well as spatulas

and other utensils away from whisks, beaters, blades, disc, dough hook and/or othermoving parts during operation to reduce the risk of injury to persons and/ordamage to the appliance or its attachments.

9. Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliancemalfunctions or is dropped or damaged in any manner. Return appliance to thenearest authorized service facility for examination, repair or electrical or mechanicaladjustment.

10. The use of attachments not recommended or sold by the appliance manufacturermay cause fire, electric shock or injury and is therefore prohibited.

11. Do not use outdoors or when standing in a damp area.12. Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.13. Always operate appliance with covers in place.14. Blades are sharp. Handle carefully due to risk of injury.15. Use the kitchen machine for processing normal quantities of food for domestic use.

ABOUT YOUR KITCHEN MACHINE

Congratulations on having selected one ofthe Bosch Compact Series KitchenMachines. A series of kitchen machines thatwe and—thankfully—cooking professionalsthe world over, feel are the best compacthousehold-type kitchen machines available.

As you read through these instructions,please pay particular attention to theIMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS. Specificsafeguards for the attachments, as well aswarnings and cautions, are provided in eachsection describing the operation of thatparticular attachment.

Bosch Compact Series Kitchen MachineThe Bosch Compact Series KitchenMachine is available in 4 models:

• The MUM 4405 UCcomprised of the 400-watt power unitwith integral cord storage, four-quartcapacity mixing bowl, with anti-splashcover (MUZ4KR3), beating, stirringwhisks and dough hook and high speeddrive cover.

• The MUM 4420 UCcomprised of the 400-watt power unitwith integral cord storage, four-quartcapacity mixing bowl with anti-splashcover (MUZ4KR3), beating, stirringwhisks and dough hook, blender(MUZ4MX2), continuous shredder(MUZ4DS2) with shedding, slicing andgrating discs, high-speed drive cover andaccessory holder.

• The MUM 4620 UCcomprised of the 450-watt power unitwith integral, internal, cord storage, four-quart capacity mixing bowl, with anti-splash cover (MUZ4KR3), beating,stirring whisks and dough hook, blender(MUZ4MX2), high-speed drive cover andaccessory holder.

• The MUM 4635 UCcomprised of the 450-watt power unitwith integral, internal, cord storage, four-quart capacity mixing bowl with anti-splash cover (MUZ4KR3), beating,stirring whisks and dough hook, blender(MUZ4MX2), continuous shredder(MUZ4DS2) with shedding, slicing andgrating discs, high-speed drive cover andaccessory holder.

UnpackingCarefully remove the power unit from itspackaging and place it on the counter so itis ready to use. As you remove theaccessories from the carton, check themagainst Figure 1 to ensure that all thestandard parts are present.

Electrical SpecificationsCheck to make sure that the voltage onwhich your kitchen machine is to operateis the same as specified on the rating plate.Standard North American models have anelectrical power rating of 400- or 450-wattmaximum power rating with the accessoryattachment that draws the most power(some accessory attachments may drawless power).

Before Using for the First TimeBefore using any of the attachments for thefirst time it is recommended they be washed,rinsed well and dried. Of the attachmentssupplied, with the systems in this manual,all parts, except the blender’s blade/baseassembly, are dishwasher safe:

> The blender’s blade/base assemblyshould be washed under running waterand dried.

Note: It is recommended that the blender’sblade/base assembly never be left tostand in water or soap solution to preventthe bearing lubricant from being washed out.

In addition to theattachments listed on the previous pagesthat are available with the standard systems,Bosch offers many special accessories.

Power Unit FeaturesMotorThe MUM 4405 and MUM 4420 have a 400-watt motor while the MUM 4620 and MUM4635 have a 450-watt motor, the mostpowerful motor offered with any compacthousehold kitchen machine.

All MUM Compact Series power units havethe following features, refer to figure 2:

Electronic speed controlSix-position rotary switch is located at theside of the multifunction arm of the powerunit: 4 speeds plus a locking park position“P” and a stop position “O/Off,” see figure2a.

Three accessory drivesThree drives:• A high-speed drive used for blender

and other attachments requiring high-shaft speed

• A mid-speed drive used for continuousshredder attachment and otherattachments requiring mid-range shaftspeedsand

• A high torque drive used for whisks,dough hook and meat grinderattachment and other attachmentsrequiring more torque.

Each of these drives is controlled by the 4-speed electronic control providing 12distinct shaft speeds optimizing the motorspeed for different loads encountered bydifferent attachments.

Ergonomic multifunction armFour locking positions place attachmentsin most ergonomic position for their use.

Park position “P”Six-position rotary switch, located at sideof the multifunction arm of the power unit,has “P” position used to “park” the drive unit.The drives must be placed in the parkposition prior to changing position ofergonomic multifunction arm. If drives are

not in proper position for rotating the armturning the rotary switch to the “P” positionwill cause motor to reposition drives. If motordoes not reposition drives when turned tothe “P” position, the drives are already inposition for arm to be rotated.

Motor drive coversTwo covers are provided to cover high -speedand mid-speed drive when they are not inuse, see figure 2c.

Convenient cord storageThe MUM 4405 and MUM 4420 haveconvenient cord storage located on the back

of the power unit, where the cord may bewound around the holder, see 2d.

The MUM 4620 and the MUM 4635 haveinternal cord storage. To store the cord orreduce the length of the cord with thesetwo units, simply pull on the cord and letthe cord be retracted into the base of themachine, see figure 2.

Four rubber feetFour rubber feet will provide the stability,while also serving to isolate the power unitfrom the hard surface to minimize noise andvibration.

Getting StartedThe operation of your Bosch CompactSeries Kitchen Machine is summarizedbelow.

Specific instructions for using each of theattachments, provided with the kitchenmachine systems covered by this manual,follow the summarized instructions. Pleaseread the specific instructions thoroughlybefore using that attachment, payingparticular attention to the IMPORTANTSAFEGUARDS and WARNINGS provided.

1. Place power unit on suitable worksurface.Before using the machine with any ofthe attachments, the power unit shouldbe placed on a suitable work surface.The surface should be sturdy, smoothand clean; make sure that there is noflour or oil on the surface. A cleansmooth surface will provide the bestfooting and will limit slipping and/or“walking.”

2. Plug power unit into power supply.Pull the electrical cord or unwind theelectrical cord to appropriate length.Make sure power unit is turned to Off“O/Off” and plug it into a convenientnearby receptacle. Turn rotary knobto park “P” position to make sure thedrives are in proper position to rotatearm and/or install attachment. If motordoes not reposition drives when turnedto “P” position, the drives were alreadyin position for arm to be rotated.

WARNING1. Do not twist or attempt to push in the

electrical cord. If the cord becomesjammed, pull out the cord to its fulllength and then allow it to slowlyretract.

2. If the power should be interrupted, thepower unit will remain on and will restartwhen power is restored.

3. Remove drive cover.Remove drive cover from drive to beused, if necessary, see figure 2c.

4. Select attachment to be used.Select attachment you wish to use.Reposition the ergonomic multifunctionarm, if necessary (see figure 4a & 4b),and place attachment on power unit.

The Bosch Compact Series KitchenMachine uses its attachments in 6modes. The various modes used (thedrive and position of the arm) areshown in table 1.

5. Operate unit with rotary switch.Once the attachment is in place, thespeed of its moving components canbe controlled through the use of therotary switch at the side of theergonomic multifunction arm. Seefigure 2a. The rotary switch has sixpositions:a. “P,” a park position used to “park”

the drive unit prior to changing thepositions of the ergonomic multi-function arm.

b. “O/Off,” the off position.c. Four speeds labeled 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Speed 1 is the lowest speed. Thespeed increases with eachsucceeding step up to the highestspeed, speed 4.

All models of the Bosch CompactSeries Kitchen Machines incorporatean electronic safety control to protectthe motor. If the safety becomesactivated, the motor will stop running.Turn the machine to off and allow tocool. See TROUBLESHOOTING at theback of this manual.

WARNINGOperate the appliance with the attachmentsin their operating positions, as shown intable 1, only. Do not operate at no load.

6. Turn power unit off.When your work with the attachmentis completed or the capacity of thebatch feed attachment has beenreached, turn the power unit to offposition, “O/Off,” turn the rotary knobto the “P,” park position, to place thedrives to their parked positions, andthen unplug.

7. Remove the attachment.Remove the attachment from thepower unit, in some cases it will be

necessary to move the arm to allowremoval of the attachment. Refer to theinstructions for the specificattachment being used.

8. Continue use.If the attachment was of the batch feedtype and you wish to continue usingthe attachment, empty the bowl or jarof the attachment per its specificinstructions and reinstall theattachment as before. Repeat thesteps 5 through 7 as often asnecessary to complete necessarywork.

9. Work completed,remove attachment.If the attachment is of the continuousfeed type, or is the batch type, andyou have completed the work youwished to perform with theattachment, remove the attachmentfrom the power unit. In some cases itwill be necessary to move the arm toallow removal of the attachment. Referto the instructions for the specificattachment being used.

10. Place contents (batch feed type).If the attachment is the batch feedtype, disassemble per the specificattachment’s instructions and placethe contents in a suitable container.

11. Care and Cleaning.Once you have completed workingwith the Bosch Kitchen Machine, thenext step is to disassemble and cleanthe attachments. If you wish to useanother attachment, please return tostep 4, above.

Power unitWith the power unit turned off andunplugged, it should be cleaned only witha clean, damp cloth. Then wipe off the motor

has come to a complete stop; whenswitched Off, the power unit willcontinue to turn for a brief period.

All models of the Bosch Compact SeriesKitchen Machines are provided with a four-quart mixing bowl with beating and stirringwhisks and a dough hook. Additional mixingbowls are available as accessory itemsunder the part numbers: MUZ 4 KR3, referto SPECIAL ACCESSORIES section at theback of this manual. The mixing bowl withbeating whisk, stirring whisk and doughhook consists of the following components,see figure 3:

How to Use Dough HookThe dough hook and mixing bowl areintended to be used to knead yeast doughsand to mix heavy cookie and pastrydoughs, and also when adding nuts,chocolate chips, dried fruit, hard butter orshortening, hardened brown sugar, etc. tobatters.

drive cover and reinstall on the powerunit.Never use coarse or caustic cleaningproducts to clean the power unit. Neverimmerse the power unit in water.The power unit may be left on the counteror stored for future use. In either case,always be sure to replace the drive coverson the drive that was used, if it had beenremoved. This will prevent dust and/or flourbuildup in the drive.

Wind the cord around the cord holder orpull on the cord to have it retract into themachine, and then place in your chosenstorage area.

AttachmentsThe attachment(s) that has been usedshould be disassembled and washed, pertheir specific instructions, dried and storedfor future use.

STANDARD ATTACHMENTSFollowing are the specific instructions forthe standard attachments provided with theBosch Compact Series Kitchen Machinescovered by this manual.

Mixing Bowl with Beating Whisk,Stirring Whisk and Dough Hook (MUZ 4KR3)

WARNING1. There is a risk of injury from rotating

tools when using the mixing bowl withthe beating whisk, stirring whisk ordough hook.

2. Avoid contact with moving parts. Keephands, hair and clothing, as well asspatulas, bowl scrapers and otherutensils away from dough hook andwhisks during operation to preventinjury and/or damage to the power unitor accessories.

3. Always work with the bowl lid fitted inplace.

4. Do not change tools until the power unit

Use of mixing bowl with dough hookBefore beginning to attach this or any otherattachment, make sure that the power unitis on a smooth, clean, suitable worksurface and switched to off position “O/Off.”

1. Before using the mixing bowl anddough hook for the first time, itis recommended that the bowl,anti-splash cover and dough hook bewashed. All components of the mixingbowl and the dough hook aredishwasher safe. Or they may bewashed in warm soapy water. Afterwashing, rinse well and dry beforeusing.

2. The dough hook is used in mode 1, seetable 1. To place the mixing bowl andinsert the dough hook the arm must bemoved as shown in figure 4:

3. Once the dough hook is in place, checkto make sure it is fully inserted andthen rotate the arm to the down positionby pressing the release button andlowering the arm.

Note: If the drives had not been parked afterlast use it may be necessary to plugin the power cord and turn the rotaryknob to the park position “P” toposition the drive to allow the doughhook to be lowered into the bowl.

Place the anti-splash cover on thebowl. The cover has an integral fillingfunnel. The cover may be removed toadd ingredients, but the cover shouldbe in place whenever the power unit isin operation. The anti-splash coverserves to prevent the escape of flourdust at the beginning of the stirring andkneading process, and also serves toprevent accidental contact with themoving dough hook.

Placing into Operation w/Dough HookMake sure that the power unit is on asmooth, clean, suitable work surface andswitched to off position, “O/Off.” Pull theelectrical cord or unwind the electrical cordto the necessary length and plug into aconvenient outlet. The mixing bowl withdough hook is now ready for operation.Sample recipes may be found in the recipesection, at the back of this manual.

How to Use Stirring and Beating WhisksAll Bosch Compact Series KitchenMachines come with stirring and beatingwhisks, in addition to the dough hook, seefigure 3.

The beating whisk is intended to be usedfor very light substances, such as cream,egg whites, sauces, batters and light pastrydoughs that are thin enough to pour.

The stirring whisk is intended to be usedfor stirring items, such as cake mixes andlight cookie doughs. Always be sure to usethe dough hook for heavy cookie doughs;for example, oatmeal-chocolate chip cookiedough.

Use of mixing bowl with beating whisk orstirring whiskBefore beginning to attach this or any otherattachment, make sure that the power unitis on a smooth, clean, suitable surface andswitched to off position, “O/Off.”

1. Before using the mixing bowl andbeating whisk or stirring whisk for thefirst time, it is recommended that thebowl, anti-splash cover and whisk bewashed. All components aredishwasher safe. Or they may bewashed in warm soapy water. Afterwashing, rinse well and dry beforeusing.

2. Both the stirring whisk, or beatingwhisk is used in mode 1, see table 1and figure 4. Follow the same step asshown in figure 4, but for 4d insert thewhisk you wish to use rather than thedough hook and its deflector.

3. Once the whisk is in place, check tomake sure it is fully inserted and thenrotate the arm to the down position bypressing the release button andlowering the arm.

Note: If the drives had not been parked afterlast use, it may be necessary to plugin the power cord and turn the rotaryknob to the park position “P” toposition the drive to allow the whiskto be lowered into the bowl.

The bowl with whisk is nowready for operation. Sample recipes maybe found in the recipe section, at the backof this manual.

Mixing bowl tips:1. When using the mixing bowl to knead

or mix a recipe designed to beprepared by hand, you will find that withthe Bosch Kitchen Machine you canusually place all the ingredients in themixing bowl at once. When doing this,always place the liquids in first. Thiswill assure more thorough mixing.

2. When adding ingredients to a mixture:a. Turn the rotary switch to a lower

speedb. Add the ingredients through the

funnel

Removing ContentsBefore beginning to remove the contentsfrom the mixing bowl, make sure that thepower unit has been turned to the parkposition “P,” to position the drive, and thento the off position, “O/Off.” Remove the anti-splash cover. Once the cover has beenremoved, the release button may bedepressed and the ergonomic arm, liftedupward, see figures 4a and 4b. The doughhook or the whisk may be removed bypulling outward with a straight, steadymotion.

The mixing bowl can be removed from thepower unit by lifting.

The contents may now be used as desired.
