They are free to choose componentsfrom around the world in order to make thatproduct the best they can. You are likely tofind capacitors from the United Kingdom andGermany, semi conductors from Japan orthe United States, while toroidal power trans-formers are manufactured in Rotel’s ownfactory.

Rotel’s reputation for excellence has beenearned through hundreds of good reviewsand awards from the most respected review-ers in the industry, who listen to music ev-ery day. Their comments keep the companytrue to its goal - the pursuit of equipment thatis musical, reliable and affordable.

All of us at Rotel, thank you for buying thisproduct and hope it will bring you many hoursof enjoyment.

Getting StartedThank you for purchasing the Rotel RX-975AM/FM Stereo Receiver. The RX-975 is threeproducts in one:

1. A full-featured audio/video control cen-ter for analog audio and video sourcecomponents

2. A high-quality AM/FM tuner with 30station presets, direct access tuning, andauto-tuning.

3. A high power 2-channel amplifier.

Rotel’s Balanced Design Concept combinesadvanced circuit board layout, comprehen-sive parts evaluation, and extensive listen-ing tests for superior sound and long termreliability. We are confident that you will en-joy the high performance of your RotelRX-975 for years to come.

In addition, the RX-975 includes a univer-sal remote control that is factory programmedoperate the RX-975 and can be programmedto operate up to seven other components ofyour choice, providing the convenience ofwhole-system control from a single remote.

Unpacking

Remove the unit carefully from its packing.Look for the handheld remote control andother accessories. Save the packing and boxas it will protect the RX-975 if you move orneed to return it for maintenance.

Placement

Place the RX-975 on a solid, dry, level sur-face away from direct sunlight, excessiveheat, high humidity, or strong vibrations.

The RX-975 can generate considerable heatduring normal operation. Do not block itsventilation openings. Allow a minimum of10 cm (4 inches) of unobstructed open spacearound the unit. If installed in a cabinet, makesure that there is adequate ventilation.

Make sure the RX-975 is close to the othercomponents in your audio/video system and,if possible, place it on its own shelf. This willmake initial cable routing, hookup, and anysubsequent system changes easier. It alsominimizes potential interference or heatbuildup from other components.

Make sure there is enough room behind theRX-975 for easy hookup. Remember, you areconnecting many other components to thisunit and you’ll probably need more spacethan you think.

Don’t stack other objects (components orother items) on top of the RX-975. Don’t letwater fall into the RX-975 as this could dam-age delicate circuitry.

Main Operating ControlsWe suggest you look over the RX-975’s frontand rear panels before you start connect-ing other components to it. The following ex-planations will help you get familiar with theunits connections, features, and controls, withnumber references corresponding to the il-lustrations at the front of this manual.

Most functions are duplicated on the frontpanel and on the remote control shipped withyour unit. A few may be available only onone or the other. When two reference num-bers appear, one refers to the location ofthe button on the front panel, the other tothe location of the button on the handheldremote control.

NOTE: Front panel controls and displays usedfor tuning the AM/FM receiver are de-scribed in the next section of this manual.

The RX-975 includes two pairs of speakerconnections for the built-in power amplifieras well as RCA preamp outputs for use withexternal amplifiers. In addition, a compos-ite video output connects the unit to your TVmonitor.

NOTE: DO NOT plug any system compo-nent into an AC source until system hookupis complete and you are confident that allcomponent-to-component connections havebeen properly made.

All video cables should have a 75ohm impedance rating. Although con-ventional audio interconnects will pass avideo signal, their construction and limitedbandwidth impose a performance penaltybecause, in part, they do not adhere to the75 ohm standard.

When making signal connections, make surethat you always preserve proper channel con-sistency, i.e. connect LEFT channels to LEFTchannel jacks and RIGHT channels to RIGHTchannel jacks. All RCA-type connections onthe RX-975 follow these standard color codes:

Left audio: RCA jack with white insetRight audio: RCA jack with red insetVideo: RCA jack with yellow inset

Connect your audio-only source componentsto these RCA inputs and outputs:

Phono Inputs and PhonoGround

Connect the left and right output cables ofa turntable to this pair of RCA inputs. Con-nect the ground wire from your turntable tothe phono ground lug, labeled GND.

CD Inputs

Connect the left and right analog outputs froma CD player to the RCA input jacks labeledCD.

Tape Inputs and Outputs

The RX-975 provides two sets of audio tapeconnections labeled TAPE 1 and TAPE 2. Eachhas a pair of inputs and a pair of recordoutputs that allow recording on either tapedeck.

Connect the left and right analog outputs froman audio tape deck to the TAPE 1 IN inputjacks. Connect the TAPE 1 OUT output jacksto the INPUTS on the audio tape deck.

Connect a second tape deck to the TAPE 2connections – the outputs of the tape deckto the IN jacks on the RX-975 and the OUTjacks on the RX-975 to the inputs on the tapedeck.

VIDEO 1 Inputs/Outputs

There are groups of connections for up tofive video source components. Each groupincludes a pair of RCA analog audio inputsand a composite video input. One group,VIDEO 1, also includes a set of record out-puts for sending audio and video signals toa VCR.

Connect your VCR to the VIDEO 1 groupof inputs and outputs. This set of connectionsallows recording.

Connect the analog audio outputs of theVCR to the VIDEO 1 PLAY left and right RCAaudio jacks. Connect the VIDEO 1 REC leftand right RCA audio output jacks to the audioinputs on the VCR.

Connect the RCA composite video outputof the VCR to the RCA composite video inputlabeled VIDEO 1 PLAY.

Hookup the VIDEO 1 REC video output tothe RCA composite video recording input onyour VCR.

VIDEO 2 – 5 Inputs

These four sets of audio/video inputs allowconnection of four additional video compo-nents such as a play-only VCR, DVD player,LaserDisc player, or DSS satellite receiver.

Connect the RCA analog audio outputs ofthe first video component to the left and rightRCA analog audio inputs labeled VIDEO 2.Then, connect the RCA composite videooutput of the video source to the correspond-ing RCA composite connection labeledVIDEO 2.

Repeat for additional components, usingVIDEO 3, VIDEO 4, and AUX/VIDEO 5.

NOTE: Any of the video source inputs mayalso be used for an audio-only source. Sim-ply omit the video connection.

TV Monitor Output

The video output of the RX-975 sends thevideo signal to your TV monitor. Connect theTV MONITOR output to an RCA compositevideo input on your television monitor. What-ever input source is selected on the RX-975will appear on screen.

Speaker Outputs

The RX-975 has a built-in stereo amplifierfor driving left and right speakers. There aretwo pairs of connections on the back panelwhich allow you to connect two pairs ofspeakers (A and B) and select them with afront-panel button.

NOTE: The combined speaker impedancemust be a minimum of 4 ohms. If you aredriving just one pair of speakers (A or Bconnections), use speakers with a nominalimpedance of 4 ohms or higher. If you aredriving two pairs of speakers (A and B) si-multaneously, use speakers rated at 8 ohmsor higher.

13

The back panel speaker connections con-sist of two groups of binding posts whichaccept bare wire or banana type plug con-nectors (except in the European Communitycountries where their use is not permitted). One group is used for the A speakers; theother for the B speakers. Each group has apositive (+) and negative (–) connection forthe right speaker and a positive (+) andnegative (–) connection for the left speaker

Each pair of connectors is color-coded forpolarity: red for the positive connection andblack for the negative connection. All speak-ers and all speaker wire is also marked forpolarity. It is essential for proper performanceto maintain this polarity at all speaker con-nections. Always connect the positive terminalof each speaker to the corresponding redspeaker terminal on the RX-975 and thenegative speaker terminal to the correspond-ing black connector on the RX-975.

Route the wires from the RX-975 to the speak-ers. Give yourself enough slack so you canmove the components to allow access to thespeaker connectors. If you are using bananaplugs, connect them to the wires and thenplug into the backs of the binding posts. Thecollars of the binding posts should be screwedin all the way (clockwise). If you are attachingbare wires directly to the binding posts, separate the wire conductors and strip backthe insulation from the end of each conduc-tor. Be careful not to cut into the wire strands.Unscrew the binding post collars. Insert thewire into the hole in the shaft. Turn the col-lars clockwise to clamp the wire in place.

NOTE: Be sure there are no loose wirestrands that could touch adjacent wires orconnectors.

Preamp Inputs/Outputs

The RX-975 provides a pair of variable-levelRCA preamp audio outputs and a pair ofRCA amplifier inputs that allow you to useexternal amplifiers in place of, or in addi-tion to, the built-in amplifiers.

NOTE: The preamp outputs are connectedto power amplifier inputs with metal jump-ers in a standard PRE OUT/MAIN IN con-figuration. To disable the built-in poweramplifiers and use external amplifiers, it willbe necessary to remove these jumpers. Savethem for future use.

To hook up the RCA audio outputsto an external amplifier, connect a standardaudio cable from each output to the inputof the amplifier channel that will power thecorresponding speaker.

Antenna ConnectionsThe RX-975 requires two antennas to receiveradio signals, one for AM and one for FM.Most users will get acceptable reception usingthe indoor antennas which are supplied withthe RX-975. Instructions for hooking up theseantennas follow.

NOTE: If you are located a long distancefrom the radio transmitters, you may usean outdoor antenna to improve reception.Outdoor antenna systems can be danger-ous if they are not properly grounded andshould be installed by a professional con-tractor familiar with the electrical code re-quirements in your local area.

AM Loop Antenna

The RX-975 includes a loop antenna to re-ceive AM radio signals. Remove this antennafrom the box and locate it near the RX-975.

Connect the 300 ohm twin-conductor wirefrom the loop antenna to the pair of screwterminals labeled AM LOOP, attaching onewire to each terminal. It does not matter whichwire attaches to which terminal, but makesure that the connections are solid and thatthe two wires do not touch.

You may need to rotate or otherwise reori-ent the antenna to find the best position.

NOTE: To use an outdoor antenna, connectits 300 ohm twin-conductor wire to the AMterminals in place of the loop antenna, onlyafter a professional contractor has installedthe antenna system in accordance with lo-cal electrical codes.

FM Wire Antenna

The RX-975 includes a wire antenna to re-ceive FM signals. In many countries (includingthe USA), this antenna is a T-shaped twin-conductor 300 ohm antenna. Remove thisantenna from the box and connect its twoconductors to the two screw terminals on thesupplied 300 ohm to 75 ohm adaptor. Con-nect the coax plug on the converter to theFM 75 ohm antenna connector on theRX-975.

For best reception, unfold the T-shaped wireantenna. There are eyelets at both ends ofthe T, which allow tacking the antenna to awall, if desired. Experiment with position-ing for best reception.

In some countries, the RX-975 may be sup-plied with a single wire FM antenna termi-nated by a 75 ohm coax connector. If yourunit is supplied with this antenna, connectit directly to the FM 75 ohm antenna con-nector.

NOTE: To use an outdoor antenna, connectits 75 ohm coax lead wire (or 300 ohmtwin-conductor wire and 300 ohm to 75ohm adaptor) to the FM 75 ohm connectorin place of the indoor wire antenna, onlyafter a professional contractor has installedthe antenna system in accordance with lo-cal electrical codes.

AC Power Connections

AC Input

Your RX-975 is configured at the factory forthe proper AC line voltage in the countrywhere you purchased it (120 volts AC, 60Hzin the US or 230 volts AC, 50Hz in theEuropean community). The AC line configu-ration is noted on a decal on the back ofyour unit.

Plug the supplied cord into the AC INPUTreceptacle on the back of the unit.

AC Convenience Outlet [USA version only]

Two AC outlets let you plug a power cordfrom a source component or other accessoryinto the back of the RX-975 so that it willbe turned on and off automatically. The outletis powered whenever the RX-975 is fullyactive and off when it is in STANDBY mode.

Remote External Sensor

This 3.5 mm mini-jack receives commandcodes from industry-standard infrared receiv-ers (Xantech, etc.) via hard-wired connec-tions. This feature could prove useful whenthe unit is installed in a cabinet and the front-panel sensor is blocked. Consult your au-thorized Rotel dealer for information on theseexternal repeaters and the proper wiring ofa jack to fit the mini-jack receptacle.
