OWNERSHIP GROUP HASAN >ABBONDANZA=
OF LUCK
By Christie DeBernardis
The word Aabbondanza@ means Aabundance@ in Italian and
proved to be the perfect name for a California-based ownership
group that has turned into a force to be reckoned with on the
West Coast in the past two years.
Abbondanza Racing founder and manager Bing Bush grew up
on a small farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and spent his youth
breaking yearlings and galloping racehorses. After graduating
law school, he set up shop in Del Mar, California, and began
setting up a few racing partnerships for clients. In 2012, Bush
decided it was time to set up a partnership of his own and
Abbondanza Racing was born.
AIt started with four guys throwing in a bit of money to buy a
filly called Changethechannel (English Channel),@ Bush said. AShe
was an unraced 3-year-old at the time trained by Sean
McCarthy. She turned out to be pretty good. We got a few
others and ultimately ended up in Richie Baltas= barn with a
mare called Melanistic (Ministers Wild Cat).@
Abbondanza started to make more of a name for itself in 2016
when Nathan McCauley joined the team and the group bought
into his homebred Free Rose (Munnings).

GUN RUNNER SETTLING IN AT GULFSTREAM Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}), the likely favorite in the
upcoming $16-million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational
Saturday, Jan. 27, took his first trip around Gulfstream Park
Friday morning (video).
Taking to the track at approximately 5:50 a.m., more than an
hour before sunrise, Gun Runner Ajust had an easy day, going
straight off a mile,@ assistant trainer Scott Blasi said.
Gun Runner, a winner of four straight Grade I events, including
the Breeders= Cup Classic, shipped into Gulfstream Thursday
evening from New Orleans.
AHe=s in such good condition right now, and he=s so fit, when
you get him off that van, off an airplane, he knows where he=s at
and what he=s getting ready to do,@ Blasi said. AHe=s just such a
champion. He takes everything in stride. Never had a problem
shipping, I think this is his 12th or 13th different racetrack he=s
run at. It=s kind of old news to him.@ Cont. p6 (Click here)

In his second start for the new partnership, the dark bay won
the 2016 GIII La Jolla H. at odds of 28-1 and was let go at 11-1
when he followed suit with a victory in the GII Del Mar Derby a
month later.
AWe sold half of Changethechannel to Nathan McCauley back
in 2015,@ Bush recalled. AThat is how I met with Nathan. We
partnered on a claiming filly and did pretty well. Then he had a
horse he bred called Free Rose and we partnered on him. He
had incredible success when we brought him out to California.@
He continued, AWe ended up putting together a business
model that is different than what Abbondanza had done in the
past. We decided we wanted to get some well-bred fillies and
mares, race them and try to improve their pedigree.@
After the success the partnership had with Free Rose, the
Abbondanza group began to grow quickly.
AAfter that, Abbondanza doubled in size,@ Bush said. AWe had a
great venture last year and it has even grown again. Everybody
in Abbondanza though are all just friends. They are all friends of
mine, or Nathan=s or a friend of a friend. It is not really a public
offering. It is just a group of guys that are fortunate to hang
around together and have some racing luck. There are 27
partners currently.@
The new business model created by Bush and McCauley is
focused on buying fillies and mares already in training or of
racing age, predominantly at the November sales. The goal is to
improve their race records, and therefore their value, and send
them back through the ring the following November.
AIt is a fairly conservative business model,@ Bush said. AWe
have been really fortunate with [bloodstock agent] David Meah.
He is just absolute magic. And Richie Baltas, I just can=t say
enough good about him. They are both great horsemen and
really bring incredible talent. We have been fortunate to

Bush & Goodyearforroses | Benoit
actually be able to improve upon some horses that have been in
some really good hands and to turn a little profit for our
partners.@
In addition to the November purchases, Abbondanza also has
what they call Aflash offerings@ of horses they become interested
in throughout the year, such as Kathy=s Song (Candy Ride {Arg}),
a $190,000 Fasig-Tipton July buy who won the Miss America S.
and finished third in the GI American Oaks since her purchase.
AEverybody has the same percentage in the horses that we
have,@ said Bush, who added that the group currently has 10
horses in their stable. AThrough the course of the year, however,
we do have what we call flash offerings. David or Nathan may
come up with a filly they like and for the existing partners, we
will say, >Do you guys want to get together and buy this filly?=
We will usually buy four or five at the fall sales in November and
then through the course of the year we will have these
additional flash offerings.@
One of Abbondanza=s biggest success stories is a mare named
Goodyearforroses (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}). She won her first start
for Bush=s group in the 2016 Robert Frankel S., which was
downgraded from a Grade III to a listed stakes when it was
rained off the turf. That proved to be the start of a hot streak for
the bay, who went on to win her next two starts in the 2017
Astra S. and GII Santa Ana S. Goodyearforroses gave the group
another thrill when finishing a very close second to recently
retired turf superstar Lady Eli (Divine Park) in last term=s GI
Gamely S.
AWe bought Goodyearforroses back in November 2016 and
another gentleman actually bought her at the sale, but decided
he didn=t want her,@ Bush explained. ADavid was really high on
her from the get go, so we bought her for $200,000. I will never
forget, she got back to California and the exercise rider texted
me and said, >OMG, OMG she doesn=t even touch the ground.= I
galloped horses, so I knew what that meant and I was really
excited about it.@
He continued, AShe won the Bobby Frankel in her first race and
came back and won two more stakes. Then the Medallion
[Racing] folks contacted us and they were interested in buying a
leg of her, so we sold them 25%. We really felt like we were on
an upward trajectory with her.@
In keeping with their business model, Goodyearforroses was
offered at Keeneland November, where she RNA=d for
$375,000, but sold privately after the sale. However,
Abbondanza has been quick out of the gate with their new
group of purchases from the 2017 November sales, winning
their second consecutive Frankel S., this time kept at its Grade III
status, with Midnight Crossing (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a
$240,000 KEENOV purchase, who blew up the tote with that win
at 22-1.
AWe=ve reloaded now with some new stock that are very
promising,@ Bush said. AWe bought Midnight Crossing and she
came out and won the Bobby Frankel. Now we have a few more
bullets in the gun with Queen Blossom (Ire) (Jeremy), who
unfortunately had a wide trip and didn=t have much racing luck
recently [when fifth in the Astra Jan. 14].@
The Abbondanza crew does not let their race results affect
their attitude. No matter where their horse finishes in a race,
they leave the track with the same enthusiasm they arrived with
and celebrate a day spent at the races with friends.
AI just call it Abbondanza style,@ Bush said. AIf we are in a
stakes race, we are going to go Abbondanza style. We dress up
and it starts its own kind of environment. We can spot each
other in the crowd and we love to sit together and go to the

paddock together. It is not just about the race. We make a
whole day of it. We like to all be together, having a good time
and being good sports, win, lose or draw. But, my God, if we
win, look out! No matter what the results, we go to the table
after, have a toast and a little
recap.@
Meah expressed similar
sentiments about the group,
saying, AThey are the most
enthusiastic group of owners I
have ever had the luck to work
around. Everything they do,
whether it is going to the sales
or a race, whether it is a Group
1 or a claiming race, they do it
in style and have fun. They just
love the sport and have a good
time. Win, lose or draw,
everyone leaves the racetrack
with a smile and is optimistic
we will move forward. They are just a really fun group to be
around. Bing is the most enthusiastic person I have ever met in
my life. Just spending time with him makes you feel great about
life.@
In addition to their stellar sportsmanship, Abbondanza also
donates 1% of all of their earnings to the Thoroughbred
Charities of America.
ANathan is the Vice President of Thoroughbred Charities of
America and I am on the board
now too,@ Bush said. AIt is one of
the only charities that gives back
not just to the horses, but to the
people who work with them as
well. We knew we wanted to
donate to a charity and that is
how we chose TCA.@
Bush=s wife Jewels inspired him
to expand Abbondanza by
creating an all-female ownership
group called Abbondanza Femme.
AI mentioned it to my wife
Jewels and she got really excited
about it,@ Bush recalled. AShe
woke up at 2:00 a.m. and started
thinking of all of her friends who wanted to be part of it. So, I
got up and said, >Let=s get this down.= Then we were up until
4:30 a.m. making a list of everybody we wanted to ask about it.
That is how we ended up launching this thing really. Jewels
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 7 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • JANUARY 20, 2018
really was a driving force behind this.@
Abbondanza Femme already has 50 partners and Bush hopes
to double that number. Like Abbondanza, all the current
members are friends of Bush or his wife or a friend of a friend.
The Femme group will operate under the same business model
of buying fillies already in training with the goal of reselling the
following year, but has a lower buy-in rate than its counterpart.
AIt is a much lower entry point, but people can buy more than
one share,@ Bush said. AWe are looking for a filly, so we always
have residual value. Right now we have about 50 partners and
I=d like to have 100. We have a lot of friends and we know they
have friends. We will start small and if we can have a little
measure of success then maybe some folks sitting on the
sidelines will jump in. That is what happened last time and I
won=t be surprised to see it happen again.@
All-female ownership groups have been on the rise in recent
years with syndicates like Lady Sheila Stable, It=s All About the
Girls and Starlight Ladies making names for themselves on the
racetrack as they grow in both size and success.
AI think those [groups] are definitely inspirations for us,@ Bush
said. AI think racing needs [all-female groups]. I really believe in
empowering that aspect of our community. It brings life to
racing to bring more women into the sport. We can benefit from
that.@
With Bush and his team at the helm, Abbondanza Femme
could be the next big thing on the all-female ownership scene as
the name Abbondanza has proven to be both fitting and lucky.
AAbbondanza means abundance in Italian,@ Bush said. AMy
wife was the inspiration for that. She is half Italian. I really loved
the name and what it stands for, which is not an abundance of
money or anything like that, but an abundance of good
experience, joy and the things we want in life.@
Gun Runner Settling In cont. from p1
Blasi continued, AIt=s probably more stressful on us than him.
We expect him to settle in and train, get a little work over the
racetrack, and school in the paddock a time or two.@
Giant Expectations Works for Pegasus...
In his final major breeze for the Pegasus World Cup, GII San
Antonio S. winner Giant Expectations (Frost Giant) went five
furlongs on Santa Anita=s fast main track at 7:45 a.m. Friday
morning in a bullet :58 flat under exercise rider Pepi Aragon. It
was the fastest of 53 drills at the distance. AHe went well,@ said
trainer Peter Eurton. AI couldn=t be happier. We=ll know more as
he goes along. We=re taking it one day at a time.@

11. Seventh behind Go Google Yourself (Into Mischief) in a key
heat back in Louisville Oct. 29, the dark bay was looking to
double up having broken through by four lengths over local
yielding sod Dec. 21. Let go at a tick under 6-1 facing a promising
bunch of fillies, the $92,000 KEESEP yearling broke well from her
outside draw and joined Go Google Yourself on the front end
around the first bend. Trading jabs with her paternal sibling
down the backside, she briefly opened daylight around the
home bend before Go Google Yourself re-engaged. That pair
slugged it out to midstretch, but Classy Act had more to give and
scampered clear of her foe by 2 1/2 lengths in the final
sixteenth. Acting Class, herself a daughter of a full-sister
champion Tempera (A.P. Indy), has a 2-year-old colt named
Giant Act (Eskendereya) and most recently visited Mr. Big.

Sabbatical Delivers First Foal of Foal Patrol:
Sabbatical (Medaglia d=Oro--Daydreaming), a mare owned by
Phipps Stable residing at historic Claiborne Farm, delivered the
first foal of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's
Foal Patrol project at 5:50 a.m. Friday morning. The foal, a bay
colt by War Front, was an early arrival. Video of the foaling and
several other clips, in addition to the live feed of Sabbatical and
her colt, can be viewed at www.foalpatrol.com.
"We're so excited to see the first foal of Foal Patrol.
Congratulations to Phipps Stable and everyone at Claiborne
Farm," said Cathy Marino, director of the National Museum of
Racing and Hall of Fame. "We are thrilled they agreed to be part
of this new initiative of the Museum. One of the Museum's
priorities is to make the sport of Thoroughbred racing accessible
to as many people as possible and Foal Patrol is a wonderful way
for people to get unprecedented insight into the breeding of a
racehorse, one of the most essential components of the sport.
We're looking forward to seeing this colt grow and develop on
the way to the racetrack."

Horses headed to the gallops at Ballydoyle | Emma Berry
CONTRADICTIONS INLABOUR COURT RULING
Op/Ed By Kevin Blake
Recent months have seen a high-profile case play out in the
Labour Court in Ireland in which the Ballydoyle Racing operation
headed up by Aidan O'Brien appealed against compliance
notices issued to them by the Workplace Relations Commission
(WRC) over their failure to give grooms and work riders rest
periods that the WRC believe that they were legally entitled to.
The origins of the issues that the case concerned can be traced
to amendments made to the Workplace Relations Act in 2015
that, seemingly unbeknownst to anyone in the Irish racing
industry, changed the rules to exclude racing industry
employees from being considered as being engaged in
agricultural work. This meant that stricter regulations would
apply to working hours in that pursuit. When Ballydoyle was
inspected by the WRC in May 2016, it was found that a number
of staff were working hours and days that infringed on the
Working Time Act.
While there has been and will continue to be a debate as to
the rights, the wrongs and the serious implications for the Irish
horse racing industry of this ruling, it has seemingly yet to be
highlighted that the Labour Court's ruling appears to represent a
clear contradiction of the government's interpretation of other
laws in this sector.
Regular readers of this space may recall my recent article
about how the medication rules in Ireland are causing major
problems for equine veterinarians.
The main issue discussed in that piece was that the fact that
horses are legally classed as food animals in Ireland results in
very strict restrictions on what medications they can be given,
with many routine medications that are readily available in
Great Britain and Northern Ireland not being permitted for use
in Ireland.
Yet, while the government are saying on one hand that horses
are food animals and are aggressively enforcing that status via
prosecutions of equine vets that transgress the strict medication
rules, this Labour Court ruling seems to hold a very clear view
that the people that work with those same food animals in
racing yards are not classed as agriculture workers. That seems
to be a blatant contradiction.
Ballydoyle now have the option of appealing the Labour
Court's decision to the High Court. Given the aforementioned
apparent contradiction in the ruling and other arguments
against it, that is an option they are likely to exercise.
While the media have portrayed this case as purely Ballydoyle
versus the Labour Court, there is no doubt whatsoever that it
will have far greater implications for the smaller equine
operators in this country that are run on shoestring budgets
than it will for Ballydoyle. It is these smaller operators that are
the foundation stones of an industry that is one of this country's
greatest rural success stories. With there already being a staffing
crisis in horse racing in Ireland, this ruling has the potential to
put some of these operations out of business, as many simply
cannot afford to employ more staff to comply with a law that
doesn't seem to be fit for purpose. Cont. p2

No one gets themselves into a career working
with animals thinking that it will be a
nine-to-five endeavour. All animals and
thoroughbred racehorses in particular have
needs that do not conform to what would be
considered a normal working day. Sometimes
the people that care for them will voluntarily
go above and beyond what would be expected
from them in other sectors in the best
interests of the wellbeing of the animals in their care. For this to
be accepted as a lawful reality in all agricultural pursuits bar
horse racing in which the animals involved are more high
maintenance than in any other animal-focused endeavour
seems to fly in the face of common sense.
One can only hope that the High Court fully consider the wider
implications of its judgement before passing it.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK AHEAD OF CAPE SALEBy Daithi Harvey
CAPE TOWN, South Africa--The seventh renewal of the Cape
Thoroughbred Sale, held in the International Convention Centre
in Cape Town, commences today and seeks to build on a record
year of returns in 2017. While keeping pace with last year will be
no mean feat given the absence of one of the most significant
supporters of the sale in recent years in Markus Jooste, some
first-time visitors to the two-day sale could help fill the void left
by the Mayfair Speculators. Last year's sale recorded a near
perfect clearance rate when 222 of the 223 offered lots changed
hands. They did so for record receipts of R155,225,000
($12,647,252/,9,194,396/i10,344,504), with the average also
posting a sale-best of R699,212 ($51,450/,41,550/i47,902), 16%
above the previous year while the median also rose 3% to
R387,500 ($28,500/,,23,050/i26,547).
CTS management has put a lot of effort into promoting the
sale to a worldwide audience and given the spectacular setting
it makes their job of attracting buyers to the sale that bit easier.
The source of 27 Group 1 winners since its inception is also a
worthy statistic. Progress with the on-going issues of quarantine
and the restriction of international travel for South African
Thoroughbreds has been made, and while a breakthrough could
be imminent later this year it is that issue revolving around
African Horse Sickness that is hampering the further
development of not just the sale but also of the South African
racing industry.
Despite these impediments, the team at CTS, lead by CEO
Wehann Smith, are hopeful of building on the progress made in
recent years.
"It's been a really good week so far," said Smith. "There seems
to be a good atmosphere and attendance appears up on
previous years. Feedback from the inspections has been
positive. The sale has gone from strength to strength in the last
few years and hopefully we can build on the great results from
last year. While that will be no easy task I don't believe it is
impossible."
Last year's sale topper, a son of Trippi named Charles (SAf),
sold for a record-equaling R6-million and there are a number of
yearlings catalogued over the next two days with pedigrees to
achieve similar amounts. Klawervlei Stud are the most prolific
vendor with 70 yearlings catalogued and one of their draft that
could command a premium is lot 35, a colt by the stud's own
late champion stallion Captain Al (SAf) and one of 14 yearlings
catalogued that is a sibling to a Group 1 winner. It is a family
that has come to prominence in both Europe and America
courtesy of the yearling's half-sister Antonoe (First Defence).

Cape Yearling Sale cont.
The Juddmonte filly, who was named a >TDN Rising Star= when
making a winning debut for Pascal Bary at Deauville in 2015,
improved for the switch to American racing when landing the
GI Just A Game S. at Belmont last summer for Chad Brown.
Lot 135 from Klawervlei Stud sports the Holy Grail of breeding
by being a half-sister to a multiple Group 1 winner, out of a
multiple Group 1 winner with the dam being a half-sister to a
Group 1 winner and champion stallion. The yearling is by G1 Prix
de l'Abbaye winner Var out of Shadow Dancing (SAf) (Fort
Wood), who is a half-sister to Captain Al. The mare has bred five
winners headed by the top-class runner Thunder Dance (SAf)
(Jet Master {SAf}), who has also become a successful broodmare
since retiring from racing.
Klawervlei Stud manager John Koster reported in excess of
1,100 viewings of their extensive draft by Thursday afternoon,
and another yearling he is looking forward to offering is lot 133.
The grey colt, from the penultimate crop of Captain Al, is a
full-brother to two top-class performers in All Is Secret (SAf) and
The Secret Is Out (SAf), both Group 1 winners in South Africa,
while the exciting Snowdance (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) also
features in the pedigree.
Klawervlei Stud offered four yearlings by Frankel (GB) last year,
the most expensive one purchased by Justin Casse for
R4,000,000 and the stud bring three by the sire to Cape Town
this weekend. Possibly the pick of the trio is lot 94 out of Pale
Moon Rising (Ire) (Kingmambo). The chestnut's dam has bred
two winners from as many runners. A half-sister to last year's
most expensive Frankel filly will be offered today as lot 59. Also
one of the Klawervlei draft, the Silvano (Ger) filly is a
granddaughter of the champion Irish 2-year-old filly Damson
(Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}), who has produced a high-class runner
in G2 Flying Childers S. winner and subsequent sire Requinto
(Ire) (Dansili {GB}).
Gaynor Rupert's Drakenstein Stud offer a colt by Trippi as lot
201 and this yearling is the first produce out of the brilliant
race-mare Beach Beauty (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}). A winner of 17
races in all, Beach Beauty was champion older mare in South
Africa on two occasions and her five Group 1 wins included two
runnings of both the G1 Garden Province S. and the G1 Paddock
S. Drakenstein also offer lot 99, a colt by Captain Al who is out of
Peace Bell (Kingmambo), a full-sister to MG1SW Campanologist.
The mare has already bred a high class runner in One Fine Day
(SAf) (Trippi). Drakenstein=s second yearling in the ring, lot 23,
should also find favour being a son of Dynasty (SAf) out of the
dual Group 1 winner Happy Archer (Aus) (Dubawi {Ire}). The
stud=s lot 86, by the same stallion was also the subject of good
reports from those on the ground.
Lot 102, another by Captain Al, who has 27 catalogued, is
offered by Andreas Jacobs's Maine Chance Farm out of the great
producer Platinum Princess (SAf) (Rakeen). The mare is already
the dam of the dual South African champion Princess Victoria
(SAf) (Victory Moon {SAf}), whose 10 wins included four at the
top level. The yearling, named Prince Of Persia (SAf), is also a
full-brother to the Group 2 winner Princess Royal (SAf). Jacobs is
a busy man being custodian of three major farms in Maine
Chance, Newsells Park Stud and Gestut Fahrhof, and in addition
to overseeing the selling of a 20-strong draft he also found time
to be the generous co-host, along with Wayne Kieswetter of
Highlands Stud, of a very enjoyable dinner in Granger Bay on
Thursday evening.
With plenty of European pedigrees and indeed stallions
featuring in the catalogue it is no surprise to see many making
the trip from the northern hemisphere in search of some sun
and some good value. Anthony Stroud, who was busy
purchasing yearlings last autumn for Godolphin, is a regular
here. Cont. p7

Cape Yearling Sale cont.
Stroud commented, "There are a lot of very good-looking
individuals with plenty of well-developed and well conformed
yearlings that will ultimately make very good racehorses. I've
come to this sale every year since it started, it's a very exciting
sale and has gotten better each year."
Another buyer who has significant Thoroughbred interests in
South Africa is Barry Irwin and the Team Valor boss is back at the
sale this week after a few years= absence.
"I was a regular here but stopped coming a few years back.
However I sensed a change in the wind if you like and decided to
come back. Between mares, yearlings and horses in training I
have about 50 horses here so I have a lot to catch up when I'm
here."
Also good news for vendors is the presence of Mark Richards
and his colleagues from the Hong Kong Jockey Club and with
Saturday's opening session of 118 lots, including withdrawals,
set to commence at 6 p.m., all the ingredients of a successful
sale appear to be in situ.
