Hi! I’m Elisa. This summer, I’m at Circus Smirkus Summer Camp in the USA. I’m here for two weeks and I’m having an amazing time!
Every day, we get up at seven. That’s early for me – I don’t usually get up until eight or nine in the summer! But I don’t want to miss anything. Then we all have a huge breakfast, so we feel very full!
At nine o’clock, we start classes. We don’t go to any boring, normal classes at circus school, and we don’t do any homework! Sometimes, we do aerobics or gymnastics, but we aren’t doing sport today. We’re having a ‘clown’ class! We’re learning to ride unicycles – and we’re wearing red noses. We look very funny! It’s difficult for us to ride a bike with one wheel. We fall off all the time, but it’s great fun. I think I like being a clown. I’m good at making people laugh!
What about you? What are you doing this week?
3 Students at Circus Smirkus don’t study after classes. ■
4 Sometimes, Elisa does sport at the camp. ■
5 Elisa thinks that riding a unicycle is easy. ■

‘Layla, do you want to have lunch with us?’ calls Prash. Layla sits near Prash and another girl. ‘Layla, this is my best friend, Frankie.’ ‘Hi, Frankie!’ says Layla. Soon, they’re all talking happily. They’ve got a lot in common. Layla and Frankie both love science fiction, and Prash and Layla both want to study maths at university. Lunch feels very short!
While they’re walking back to class, Layla notices a poster for a school talent show. ‘Prash should sing,’ says Frankie. ‘He’s amazing! But he’s shy.’ ‘Really? I love singing!’ says Layla. ‘Let’s do it together, Prash!’
Every evening after dinner, Layla goes to Prash’s house to sing. Luckily, his parents like music! Sometimes, Frankie comes along afterwards and they all do homework and chat. Layla is very happy – she really likes Prash and Frankie.
It’s the evening of the talent show. Tom goes first. He plays the guitar quite well and the judges give him six points out of ten.
Layla and Prash are next. They sing With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles and the judges love them! They get nine points.
Keira is last. ‘What is she wearing?’ asks Frankie. ‘Look at those shoes!’ Keira starts a street dance routine. She jumps, turns, and does some gymnastics. ‘Actually, she’s really good,’ says Layla. ‘Maybe we won’t win, Prash!’ But then something terrible happens.

Part 1
Physical education fact!
Street dance is a type of
modern, informal dance.
It’s a style of hip hop
dancing and it started to
become popular in the
1970s. As a result of films
like High School Musical
and StreetDance 3D,
this kind of dancing is now more popular, and some schools
teach street dance in physical education classes.
