*Call to Worship2 Matthew 11: 28 – 30
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Call to Confession Psalm 51: 16, 17
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Silent Confession of Sin
* Please stand if able.
Corporate Confession of Sin Psalm 51: 1 – 12
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
*Offer of Forgiveness Through Christ Ephesians 2: 8 – 10
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
* Please stand if able.

Children’s Church Dismissal3
Pastoral Prayer Elder Doug Sanford
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. AMEN
Sermon Romans 14: 13 – 23 Pastor Curt Presley
Children’s Church: Parents please note that your children will be escorted back to the sanctuary during this next hymn, please meet them at the back of the sanctuary and escort them back to your seats.
3 Children’s Church is a special opportunity we provide for children three to four years of age to help them and their parents make the transition from the nursery to “big church”. They are dismissed with the help of a parent after the collection of tithes and offering to the gym to where they will participate in the singing of the Doxology, praying the Lord’s Prayer, a Bible story, snack, and a brief play period to get some energy out. This is not a “babysitting” time, but to help them grow and mature as worshipers of God that He has created them to be. After Children’s Church they will be led back into the sanctuary to be with their parents for the closing hymn. Please note that Children’s Church is an option for you and your child. If you would choose to keep your child with you for the entire service and not have them participate in Children’s Church we support that as well!
* Please stand if able.

Postlude
4 Just as God has the first word in worship, He also has the last word. For those who are in Christ Jesus, these are always words of blessing. We look up and extend our hands out in a posture of receiving the blessing of God.
Sermon Passage Romans 14: 13 – 23
13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling
block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is
unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by
what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ
died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a
matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus
serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and
for mutual upbuilding.
20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for
anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything
that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is
the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is
condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Sermon Notes
The Gospel
So what exactly is the Gospel? The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome, “The gospel is…the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Romans 1: 16) This Gospel power is not simply about sharing a message, doing better or being nicer, but about a God-generated renovation of all of life. In so doing He gives us a new object of worship, new fuel for life and a new purpose for the future. The Gospel does this because it is first and foremost outside of us. Out of this fountain of power flows mercy, forgiveness and love—in essence transformed lives. Moreover, this fountain is not generated from within us—from our efforts, experiences or knowledge. This fountain is found outside of us in the amazing and historical work of Jesus—his life, crucifixion and resurrection. His finished work alone restores, forgives and empowers sinners in a God-directed life. So how do we embrace the Gospel? There is something to admit. Christians are people who admit that they are weaker, more guilty and sinful than they would have ever dared admit. By nature and by choice we are not in a relationship with God—even though we were created for such a relationship. Instead, naturally we live a self-centered rather than a God-centered lifestyle, which is characterized by all sorts of misdeeds and deceptions. Left to ourselves we are helpless to break this pattern. (Jeremiah 17: 9, 10; Romans 3: 10 – 18, 23)
There is something to believe. Christians are people who believe that God loves people so much that he sent his only Son to earth to become a man, Jesus Christ, and that Jesus dies on the cross as our substitute and was raised from the dead in order to offer us complete forgiveness. Through Christ, we are more loved, valued and accepted by God than we would have ever dared imagine. (John 3: 16; Ephesian 2: 8 – 10)
There is something to consider. Christians are not naïve, but they have counted the cost of following Jesus. Being a Christian involves acknowledging Jesus’ authority and Lordship in every area of life, welcoming his work to change us from the inside out, and rejoicing to spend time with him and with his followers in the life of the church. (Matthew 10: 34 – 39; Luke 9: 23)
There is something to do. We receive Christ as Savior and Lord by self-consciously turning away from our sin and our sinful self (which the Bible calls repentance) and turn toward Jesus as he is offered to us in the Gospel. We look to him because he alone offers the forgiveness, acceptance with God and the power for a new life that we so desperately need. The Bible calls this faith. (Matthew 3: 2; Mark 1: 15; Romans 10: 9, 10)
We welcome any questions you may have about the Gospel or anything else you may have seen or heard here at Christ Presbyterian Church today. If you have any questions or need anything else, please speak to one of our
pastors, officers, or staff. It is our privilege to serve you in any way we can!

-Fall 2016 Adult Sunday School Classes:
Parables in the Gospel of Matthew: Pastor/Scholar James Montgomery Boice said, “Some sections of the Bible give us grand theology. Some move us to grateful responses to God. But the parables break through mere words and make us ask whether there has indeed been any real difference in our lives. And isn’t this what we should expect, since the parables come from the lips of Jesus.” Come join us for a study of the parables in the Gospel of Matthew as we will explore what difference Jesus has made and should make in our lives. Taught by Clay Dabbs and Jamie Peterson.
The Gospel…according to Elijah & Elisha: Decline of a nation; undoing of the good; abuse of power; idolatry in the land; forgetfulness of a people. This is what characterized Israel in the days of the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha. And yet—the relentless pursuit of a loving God; awesome displays of His presence in their midst; mighty saving acts on behalf of His people. This is the other part of Israel’s story—and ours too. This fall come walk with Elijah and Elisha as they show us in surprising (and sometimes shocking) ways God’s presence and power—both to confront sinners and preserve His people. Taught by Melvin Manickavasagam and Steve Redding.

Missionary/Ministry of the Week Jim and Karen Romaine - New York City - Praise God that two new house churches have started, and that Muslim believers have begun evangelizing other Muslims. Pray that many Muslims will respond to the Gospel at the “Heart for Muslims” conference in New York this month. [email protected]
Sunday School teacher(s) of the week: Jr. High - Scott Byrd & CiCi Rutherford
Today: 5:30 p.m - Evening worship. Sermon text: James 1:19-25
-Operation Christmas Child - It is that time of year in which we have the wonderful opportunity to pack a “shoebox” for a child we more than likely will never meet, but God knows them by name! Our goal for CPC is to deliver 200 boxes this year. Boxes can be found in two locations around the church: in the foyer and beside the world map in the hallway. All boxes need to be brought to the church by November 20. For more information or ideas for packing, please remember to pick up the letter where the shoeboxes are located. *The most important aspect of packing is the time in prayer for the child that will receive your box.
- Men's Wild Game Dinner - Thursday, October 27 at 6:00 p.m. All men are invited to enjoy fellowship, great food, worship, and teaching. For those without wild game, please know that side dishes and desserts are equally appreciated! The church's grill will be ready in the back parking lot by 5:15 p.m. if you want to cook your dish here, and we will plan to start eating at 6:00 p.m. Justin McGuire, pastor of College Hill Presbyterian Church, will be our guest speaker. Please invite friends and coworkers to join us too! Contact Brandon Ames (662-816-2123) if you have any questions or are interested in helping coordinate the event.
- Church Administrator- With CPC's growth in membership, staff, and budget, as well as plans for a new building, the Diaconate and Session have recognized the need for a full time Church Administrator. The Administrator will serve primarily as Diaconal support; consequently, the Administrator will be responsible for oversight of financial matters, building issues, and general office/personnel administration. This person may also assist/facilitate in the coordination of CPC ministry efforts, as well as event preparation. If you are aware of potential candidates, please have them submit a resume’ to Homer Harris.
