COMMODORE MATT’S NEWSHappy New Year OYC members! I’m honored to be the 2009 commodore of such a prestigious organization made up of a great membership. I see big things in store for the club in 2009. Even if money isn’t tight, people aren’t spending like they used to, and I believe they’ll be finding things to do closer to home. Hopefully many of the boats in the local marinas that never seem to leave the dock will get some use, and OYC will be there to make sure they have as much fun as possible while doing so.Your board members are hard at work making sure that you have a great year with OYC. However, there’s one thing you’ll need to do in order to help make it a great year, and that is to show up and participate. You’re already a member, so take advantage of the benefits. While you’re at it, bring a friend or two and introduce them around. If you have an event on your mind that you’d like to see the club organize, drop me a line and let me know. We’ll do what we can to make it happen.
It has finally warmed up a bit outside, and sailing’s on my mind. It’s a great day for a sail and that’s what
Ginger and I have planned. See you out there on the water!
Matt

OYC NEWSLETTERVICE COMMODORE PETE’S REPORTGreetings fellow club members!
There are less then two months remaining to prepare your boat for the first OYC sponsored event of the year, the Top Gun Regatta scheduled for March 28. It’s time to get back to “basics” and there’s no better way to do that then by testing your sailing skills….solo, just YOU and the boat!
While on the subject of sailing skills, On April 11, OYC will sponsor the X to C Regatta. In this event you will be competing against the clock in an attempt to complete the course faster then any other boat. Competitive categories include: Fastest Overall, Fastest of each PHRF Class / Division, Fastest of any one-design fleet, Fastest of any other handicapped (Portsmouth, etc.) division, Fastest of all time of any of the above.
On April 22, OYC will kick off the premier keelboat racing event on the lake, the Wednesday Night Series, make sure you mark your calendar now.
Two major regattas are scheduled in May. OYC will host the Pursuit of Sailing Regatta on the 2d and 3d and Lake Norman Yacht Club will host the Hospice Regatta on the 16th and 17th. Please don’t
miss either one of these events since all proceeds will go to charities. You’ve now been alerted you to a full schedule of racing for the
spring of ’09. There’s just one more task that still needs to be completed. In addition of getting your boat ready, You’ll need to do a little homework by checking out US Sailing’s newly published THE RACING RULES OF SAILING for 2009 -2012. There are some major rule changes for 2009 that will certainly affect you, so please be prepared. Doug Riley emailed me the following websites which highlight those rule changes and the impact they will have:

motivated you to participate, so I’m looking forward to seeing you on the water!

OYC NEWSLETTERREAR COMMODORE’S REPORTWe kicked off the Outrigger Yacht Club 2009 social calendar with the Chili Cook-Off at Mariner Villas. We had a great turn out. Those in attendance enjoyed some great chili, appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Thanks to all that came, and a special thanks to those that brought chili or another dish for the event.
We are planning to sponsor your favorite OYC social events again this year. Let me know what additional activities you would like to have. In years past we have scheduled boating activities, like raft ups and other non sailing events that bring our members together for non racing activities. Give me a call at 704-293-0780 or send me an email with your thoughts about additional social activities.
Mark your calendar for our next event, the Frogmore Stew, which will be held on March 28.
Respectfully,
Jim Juhl, Rear Commodore

Your newsletter editor wasn’t able to make the chili cookoff this year, but from the pictures Commodore Matt sent, it looks like a good time was had by all. Pictured above is Chester Davis being presented the winner’s bottle of Tequila. On the right, it appears Chip Richardson is admiring the bottle and wondering why not him.
