In Thermal Power Plants (Coal or Nuclear Based) where water is used as a working fluid; the low

pressure and low temperature steam is converted into liquid state for further operation. The condenser

which is basically a heat exchanger requires cooling water to condense the incoming steam. Hence, a

cooling tower becomes an auxiliary which circulates cooling water in the condenser. Due to the

continuous recirculation of water in the condenser, the following problems are observed:

• Corrosion of Pipes and Heat Exchanger Units

• Scaling in Condenser Pipes

OR

AIP

L Gro

up

Of C

om

pa

s • Microbial Growth

• Due to scaling and biofilm formation, heat transfer rates are affected.

• Due to continuous deterioration of cooling water, more make up water is

required and blow downs are increased; subsequently reducing the Cycles

of Concentration (CoC).

recirculation.

•Since ozone oxidizes the biofilm which serves as a binding agent adhering scale to heat

exchanger units; scale buildup is reduced and higher heat transfer rates are achieved.

•Due to lesser blow down rates, make up water requirement is reduced which leads to

financial savings.

•Requirement of chemicals for anti scaling and bio-fouling control are either reduced or

eliminated after a few months.

WHO estimates that, in India, about 38 million people are affected by waterborne diseases each year, of which

over 75% are children; 780,000 deaths are attributable to contaminated water and more than 400,000 can be

attributed to diarrhea alone. India ranks a dismal low 120th out of 122 nations for its water quality and 133rd

out of 180 nations for its water availability. Keeping in mind the above points; following problems are commonly

faced by our current drinking water facilities:

• Traces of inorganic contaminants(As, Cr, Mn, Fe, etc)

• DBP formation due to Chlorine (THM, HAA, etc)

• Traces of organic contaminants

BENEFITS OF OZONE IN DRINKING WATER

• Pre-Treatment using Ozone does the following:-

• Remove pathogens thus reducing challenges at final

disinfection especially Cryptosporidium which is highly

resistant to chlorination

• Make the water more responsive to final disinfection by

reducing chlorine demand and removing constituents of TOC-

turbidity, color, DOC, endocrine disruptors.

• Reduce the probability of THM by-product formation by

removing precursors to its formation in the initial stage itself.

Lakes are suffering from different stress factors and need to be restored using different approaches. The eutrophication

remains as the main water quality management problem for inland waters: both lakes and reservoirs. The way to curb

the degradation is to stop the nutrient sources and to accelerate the restoration with help of in-lake technologies.

Especially lakes with a long retention time need (eco-) technological help to decrease the nutrient content in the free

water. The microbial and other organic matter from sewage and other autochthonous biomasses causes oxygen

depletion, which has many adverse effects. In less developed countries big reservoirs function as sewage treatment

plants. Natural aeration solves problems only partly and many pollutants tend to accumulate in the sediments. Problems

that arise at urban lakes:

• Increased pH levels due to the photosynthesis carried out by algae.

• Greenish Appearance due to algal bloom

SWIMMING POOLS

The water in public swimming pools

contains microorganisms and unwanted substances,

which come from the skin and excretion products of

swimmers. Swimmers cause many pollutants to enter

the pool water, such as bacteria from saliva, excretion

products, pollution from swimwear, skin tissue, sebum,

sweat, nose and throat saliva, hairs, cosmetics

and ammonia (NH ). Aiming for clean swimming pool

OR

and ammonia (NH3). Aiming for clean swimming pool

water through constant refreshment is often too

expensive. Also, this does not solve the problem of

pollutants that remain on swimming pool walls. The

water is recycled, causing pollutant and pathogen

concentrations to increase. Microorganisms will

multiply and this increases the risks of contagious

diseases.

Disadvantages of using Chlorine:

Swimming pool water contains dissolved pollutants, such as urine and sweat and other

excretion products of swimmers. Sweat and urine largely consist of water, ammonia and

urea. The components of sweat and urine are not harmful for human health. However,

when these products react with disinfectants in the water, such as chlorine, unwanted

reaction products can be formed which consist mainly of chloramines. Also chlorine is

ineffective against many bacteria, viruses and parasitic protozoa.

ORAIPL’S FIRST INSTALLATION IN AOP (CETP,

ANKLESHWAR)

• ORAIPL won its first project in Advanced Oxidation Process in the pre-treatment fora CETP for Agro-waste at Ankleshwar via Detox Corporation.

• The CETP was designed to work on Multiple Effect Evaporators, however thecondensate from the MEE contains high recalcitrant COD which is difficult todegrade by biological means since the Biodegradability Index in such waters aredegrade by biological means since the Biodegradability Index in such waters arevery low and also there might be some inherent toxicity to the biological florawhich might reduce their efficiency of BOD/COD reduction.

• Catalytic Ozonation (Ozone + Hydrogen Peroxide) was given a shot at thecondensate sample and the results achieved were highly favorable.

• After the AOP Treatment, there was an instant increase in the biodegradabilityfirstly due to the conversion of COD to BOD and secondly due to the reduction intoxicity in the effluent.

• This technology is widely used in Europe and North America.

• There have been around 600+ installations only in the drinking water sector that

too till the year 2006 and numerous more in different applications.

• So we are certainly not the first ones to give this technology a shot which has been

giving excellent results since a century now.

NOTEWORTHY FACTS ABOUT OZONE

• Soluble in water (At 20 deg Celsius, 570 mg/L).

• Known as Activated Oxygen

• Short Half- Life

• Peak absorption in the UV spectrum is 255.3 nm which protects us from the UV-C radiation

• Peak absorption in the UV spectrum is 255.3 nm which protects us from the UV-C radiation

from the sun.( Ozone layer protects us from UV rays of the sun via this property.)

• Effective as a disinfectant and sterilizing agent.

• The second most powerful oxidant after Fluorine with an oxidation potential of 2.07 V.

• 3000 times stronger as a disinfectant with respect to chlorine.

• Although being an endothermic reaction, the ozone generation system still needs a

chilling system mainly due to the high amount of heat generated during corona

discharge.

• Reaction is reversible due to highly unstable nature of ozone

• Corona Discharge

• Ultraviolet Radiation(Absorption of light energy by O2)

• Electrolysis(Passing electricity through an electrolyte(mostly water) for direct diffusion)

• Radiochemical (High energy irradiation of oxygen by radioactive rays; not recommended

due to difficult handling of harmful isotopes)

WHY OZONE IN WATER TREATMENT?

Ozone’s properties provide multiple benefits in water treatment:-

• Oxidation

• COD/TOC

• Increased DO so that no anaerobic condition is generated

• Fe/Mn

• Hydrogen Sulfide

OR

• Hydrogen Sulfide

• Taste and Odor

• Color

• Specific Chemicals (Endocrine Disruptors etc)

• Disinfection

• Bacteria/Biofilms( The subsequent inability to divide and form colonies.)

• Virus(The inability of the microorganism to form plaques in host cell.)

• Parasites ( The inability to replicate.)
