Dear fellow Rotarians
Just an update re our Donations for Mindanao Relief Funds. We raised Php 310k in a span of four days thru the effort of Rotarian Hector Almario. We deposited these to two accounts: one for District Disaster Management Fund thru Chairman Troy Bumagat amounting to Php 260k; and to AMRO (All terrain Medical Relief Operations) thru Dr. Wyben Briones.
Tomorrow, November Eight, is a District Activity, the TRF Night at Harold's Hotel. There are nine members from our club who has confirmed to attend. For those who wants to join us, please register not later than 5pm today so we can inform DRFC Lilu for additional seat reservation.
Few days from now, our Friendship Club and Project partner for our Rosas VTT Project, RC Yokosuka will arrive. Kindly register your names on our official viber group chat for the series of upcoming activities, Arrival and Welcome Dinner, Culminating Event and most of all be part of the one-week Rosas VTT Mission. Kindly refer to our Sugbuanon issue for the Date, Time and Venue.
Lastly, two more important events that need your presence, our 87th Year Anniversary celebration which is scheduled on November 16, Saturday at 6pm, and the Ride-to-End-Polio CEBU. Since this will be an important event, we will not hold any lunch meeting next week, Nov 14, for we want our members to join us on our Anniversary night.
The Ride to end Polio committee is busy now preparing for the actual event on the 22nd-24th of November. On this note, I would like again to appeal to each and every one to take part in this humanitarian effort of raising funds for the Rotary Polio Plus project as well as campaigning for the awareness on Polio vaccination which is very safe. We just heard of the sad news of the 4th confirmed case of Polio in Mindanao. So gentlemen, let's future proof our children and our children's children of this dreaded but preventable disease. Let us do good to the world.
Cheers!

May those assembled here today enjoy
the many offerings of Rotary. May we
abide by the rules we have established,
those of trust, fellowship and ethics, and
may we place Service above Self, in our
daily endeavors. And may we always test
ourselves and our efforts to be sure they
are the truth, good for all concerned, of
benefit to mankind, and provide peace
and understanding. Amen.

Mark Daniel Maloney President 2019-20
November 2019
Rotary Day at the United Nations, which we celebrate each November, is an important reminder of the historic relationship between our organizations. But this year’s event is even more important than usual, because we are building up to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in June 2020.
You might ask, why celebrate this anniversary? For Rotary, it is entirely appropriate, because we played such a critical leadership role in the San Francisco Conference that formed the United Nations in 1945. Throughout World War II, Rotary published materials about the importance of forming such an organization to preserve world peace.
Not only did Rotary help influence the formation of the UN, but this magazine also played a leading part in communicating its ideals. Rotary educated members about plans to create the UN through numerous articles in The Rotarian and through a booklet titled From Here On! When the time came to write the UN charter, Rotary was one of 42 organizations the United States invited to serve as consultants to its delegation at the San Francisco Conference.
Each organization had seats for three representatives, so Rotary International’s 11 representatives served in rotation. The people officially representing Rotary included the general secretary, the current and several past presidents, and the editor of The Rotarian. In addition, Rotarians from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America served as members of or consultants to their own nations’ delegations.
We have a deep and lasting relationship with the UN that deserves to be celebrated and appreciated. To recognize this relationship, Rotary will host five special events between now and June: Rotary Day at the UN in New York on the 9th of this …..continue next page

month; three presidential conferences next year in Santiago, Chile, in Paris, and in Rome; and a final celebration just before the Rotary International Convention in Honolulu.
The focus on the UN in the year ahead is not only about the past; it also lights a path to our future. There are so many parallels between the work we do through our areas of focus and the work of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. While those goals are indeed incredibly ambitious, they provide inspiration and direction — and are similar to many Rotary goals, which have proven to create lasting, positive change in our world. The goals can be achieved, but only if undertaken with the same long-term commitment and tenacity that Rotary understands so well. Alone, we cannot provide clean water for all, we cannot eliminate hunger, we cannot eradicate polio. But together with partners like the United Nations, of course we can.
Please consider attending one of our five UN celebrations. I look forward to sharing news of these special events with you throughout the year.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK…
BUSINESS MEETING By: Walter Cang
Our meeting was dedicated to the
discussion of business matters related to our
club. We were reminded about the District’s
TRF Night happening this week. Our Rosas
VTT looks all set to take off as scheduled and
Rosas Chair Dir. Charles Ong looks to have
done a marvelous job in organizing this.
Thanks to all our members who are
volunteering their time and services to make
this happen. This month we are also
observing RCC’s 87th Anniversary and Dir.
Javi who is looking after Fellowship has
arranged for this to be held at the showroom
of 38 Park Avenue. Many thanks to PP Joe
Soberano and Rtn. Hector Almario for
providing us this beautiful venue.
This month will surely end with a bang as 2
major events are happening, the Perimeter
Ride to End Polio, and the Rotary Institute to
be held in Manila. It seems like the more we
know of the ride, the more we realize just
how complex an undertaking this will be.
The logistics of planning this event, complex
as it may be, is easily matched by the
grueling physical, physiological and
P a g e | 5 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020
psychological challenges many of the riders
will have to overcome in their ride. I
certainly wish them all the best in their
noble effort.
Many of our members have signed up to join
the event in Manila. To those who are
unaware, The Rotary Institute is an annual
event that brings together past, present and
future district governors and senior leaders
from one or more zones, to share
information, exchange ideas about Rotary
International (RI) and The Rotary
Foundation (TRF), and build new
connections and fortify old ones.
This year, it will bring together past, present
and future presidents and directors of RI,
trustees of TRF, regional leaders, as well as
future district governors from Zones 1B, 9
and 10 (Philippines falls under Zone 10A).
Pres. Mike announced to all he has
appointed the Nominating Committee Chair
in the person of PP Bernard Sia and Election
Committee Chair PP Rene Kintanar. He also
shared with everyone that for the first time
in the history of District 3860, 2 members of
our club has joined the prestigious Arch
Klumph Society. Until this day, there has
been no AKS member outside of the Capital
Region so this is a historical milestone for
Rotary Philippines, District 3860 and the
Rotary Club of Cebu. Kudos to our generous
members who stepped up and may your
decision spur others in our District to join
your ranks.
We also welcomed into our ranks our
newest member, Albert Christian Co.
Welcome to the world of Rotary and may
this simple step give you the opportunity to
change your life in service and giving to
others.
Late into our meeting, the Hon. Mayor of
Cebu, Edgardo Labella arrived. The Mayor
had been invited to be our guest speaker
that day but formal duties prevented him
from joining us earlier. As I was tasked to
introduce our Mayor, I did a bit of research
on his background. I shared this during our
meeting and I am posting this only because I
think not many people know that Mayor
Labella’s father who was a Visayan Movie
Director and his mother was also a Visayan
actress. In 1998, he was a passenger in MV
Princess of the Orient that sailed from
Manila to Cebu that sank during Typhoon
Vicki where 150 of the 388 passengers
perished. a ship that sank in 1998 with many
lives lost. He floated in the water for 36
hours before being rescued!
P a g e | 6 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020
After the warm welcome accorded to him,
he quickly took the mic and shared his
thoughts on how his life as Mayor of this city
has been. He admitted to having no
prepared speech but when you’re the mayor
of this great city, sharing your experience is
interesting enough to keep our members
glued to their seats.
The Mayor took time to share news about
politics, business and public safety. Mayor
Labella strikes me as someone who’s really
sincere in getting things done, regardless of
popularity or party origins. He made it clear
that he knows not everyone had elected him
to his office but assures all that his priority
will be to implement projects and
regulations that will benefit Cebuanos in the
grand scheme of things. He vowed to
continue implementing projects from the
previous administration as long as he is in
agreement with the objectives and intended
outcome. If not, he is also open to tweaking
the plans and will resort to cancellations
only if he finds no merit in continuing them.
This is a breath of fresh air as I have
personally seen the vindictiveness of
politics, down to the Barangay level. This
attitude must be abhorred as it only serves
the purpose of a politician, not the
constituents. Yet I am floored at how
pervasive this practice is in our city. So to
hear this from our good Mayor, I am glad to
know he is leading by example and I hope,
perhaps this new attitude may take roots
from the top and work its way down to our
LGUs.

Project Mindana-One
Mindanao has been shaken by three consecutive earthquakes within the same location on 16, 29 and 31 of October 2019, each compounding the effect of the previous one. Last October 29, 2019, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao specifically at the municipality of Tulunan, North Cotabato at exactly 9:04 a.m. This earthquake has also affected the neighboring municipalities, cities and provinces which has led to having 29,349 families or 146,745 people affected as of November 2, 2019 based on report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
In light of this, the 7th Batch of the Cebu Young Leaders Summit, in partnership with the Rotaract Club of Metro Cebu – CIT University Chapter, spearheaded the PROJECT MINDANA-ONE: #OneForMindanao, an initiative which calls for donations from all over Cebu, both in kind and in monetary form, through collaboration with Cebu Council of Rotaract Clubs, various organizations and groups in Cebu. We are launching our campaign for “Saan Aabot ang 20 pesos mo?” #20PesosChallenge. Our goal is to collect Php 20.00 from people through crowd funding to fundraise and aid the needs of the victims of the earthquake in Mindanao.

Four legs
A wife comes home late one night
and quietly opens the door to her
bedroom.
From under the blanket, she sees
four legs instead of just her
husband's two.
She reaches for a baseball bat and
starts hitting the blanket as hard as
she can.
Once she's done, she goes to the
kitchen to have a drink.
As she enters, she sees her husband
there, reading a magazine.
He says, "Hi darling, your parents
have come to visit us, so I let them
stay in our bedroom. Did you say
hello?"
