Mark Daniel Maloney President 2019-20

March 2020

March is the month we celebrate Rotaract — and this has been quite a year for our young partners in service.

Last spring, the Council on Legislation elevated Rotaract in our constitution: Rotary International is now the association of both

Rotary clubs and Rotaract clubs. Then in October, the Rotary Board of Directors eliminated the artificial Rotaract age limit and took other steps to break down barriers that were preventing Rotaract from growing in some parts of the world.

These steps were long overdue, because Rotaract is a vision of what Rotary must become. Not only do we need to open our doors to our young colleagues, but we also have to open our ears and minds to the Rotary experience they find most engaging. That is one of the best ways we will meaningfully grow Rotary.

When I say grow Rotary, I mean it in many ways. We need to grow our service and to grow the impact of our projects. Most importantly, however, we need to grow our membership, so that we can achieve more. Rotaractors provide this opportunity, not only because they can transition to Rotary at the time that is right for them, but also because they understand what it will take to attract others like them

Business as usual will not work for us anymore. Bringing in more members to replace the ones we lose is not the answer. It is like pouring more water into a bucket full of holes. We need to address the root causes of member loss in many parts of the world: member engagement that is not what it should be, and our member demographic that skews steadily older.

It is time to make some fundamental changes. We already know what the barriers are to an engaged and diverse membership. It is time to act. on what …..continue next page

we know: creating new membership models, opening new paths to Rotary membership, and building new Rotary and Rotaract clubs where the existing clubs do not meet a current need.

New club models represent an opportunity to connect with a more diverse group of individuals — particularly those who are unable or unwilling to join our traditional clubs. While new club models have been emerging for some time, it is up to district governors to make them a reality. In January at the International Assembly, our incoming district governors took part in an exercise called Build Your Own Club Model. It was a wonderful experience that put them in the right frame of mind for the work ahead.

Ultimately, however, it will be up to Rotaractors and young Rotarians to create new club models that are most meaningful to the next generation. We may think we know what young people want from Rotary clubs in the future, but I am confident that what young people say will surprise us. It will be our job to support their innovation, for it will help us grow Rotary as Rotary Connects the World.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK… By: Walter Cang

Our meeting went off with a little hitch when the sound system went kaput. I don’t know why but for the last few years, our venue sound system has always been flaky. We’ve had to sing the Nasudnong Awit acapela on many occasions and despite repeated

requests for the hotel technicians to do something about their faulty system, it continues to haunt us. So last week’s attempt to sing what would have been a walk down memory lane for many of our senior members turned into an acapela rendition of the song Oh Carol! by Neil Sedaka. A quartet of men and a single rose, in the person of Janice Minor. It was definitely one for the books with the song quickly going off key, but they gamely sang with PP Joe Gapas and his trademark clap! No doubt it was a lot of fun for us who sat and watched the show. May their tribe increase!

Our guest speaker knows of us because our club is one of the sponsors of the foundation she runs. Ms. Valeoni Suico is a BS Biology graduate of Cebu Doctors College. Having taught at the Cebu International School for several years, she finally left the school 2009

P a g e | 5 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020

and opened The Lord Who Cares Foundation. It exists for the sole purpose of providing welfare and life skills to benefit the youths who are in the lower fringes of our society.

The project is primarily a satellite school that caters to educationally deprived youths from troubled homes, often due to social circumstances; children who grew up with little to guidance in character, values and general life preparedness. With the rapid growth of our city, there has been a rapid expansion of informal settlers in the metropolis like Mandaue and Cebu cities. These areas are where troubled youth congregate and find wrong influences. This is where their foundation can be found.

Through their work, they see the face of unimaginable levels of poverty. And they see these children engage in forms of

livelihood that endanger their lives. Through this project, the youth are given life-oriented classes which are coordinated with the local division of the Department of Education. Due to severe educational deprivation, many of these youth severe deficiencies in scholastic aptitude so they are being taught the basics in order to make them qualified to enter high school. In this process, they get to cross that bridge which allows them to safely enter the mainstream of society. Valeoni share with us several of their alumni who have gone on to become wage earning members of society. It surely elated us to hear their stories. Their training extends to the teachers as well so that they are equipped with the skills necessary to deal with their students. Skills such as trauma healing since many of the kids suffer from their past experiences. This training is actually endorsed by and undertaken in cooperation with DepEd.

With her work background, they have recognized the need for business and government to work together to alleviate poverty. She reminded us that our success translates into our ability to help these children and said a simple but meaningful prayer for all of us. Today, her foundation is focused in taking steps to deal with unplanned and unwanted pregnancies, especially among the youth. Our country faces a national social emergency. Latest figures show that in 2019, 530 minors between the age of 10-14 are getting pregnant every day! There’s no need to look far as even in our province, there were more than 300 cases reported last year, averaging 1 to 2 per week. She also shared that every week, reports show that girls as young as 10 years old are getting pregnant!

This scary statistic was shared with us because she believes that her foundation alone cannot tackle this problem. However, with our influence in government, we are in a better position to influence our lawmakers, local government officials who can craft policies to fight this scourge. One example she cited was the proliferation of business

P a g e | 6 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020

establishments like cheap motels near schools that offer their facilities for as cheap as ₱50. How they managed to get their business permits is hard to comprehend. But with our help, the local government can be notified and forced to take action. She ended her talk with a 5-minute video of a father’s love letter to his child. It was touching and emotional. And most of all it was a message that resonates between us as parents and our children, just as it resonated between us and our creator.

Goodbye to you my trusted friend

We've known each other since we

were nine or ten

Together we've climbed hills and

trees

Learned of love and ABC's

Skinned our hearts and skinned our

knees

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the

sky

Now that spring is in the air

Pretty girls are everywhere

Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun

we had seasons in the sun

But the hills that we climbed

Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye Papa please pray for me

I was the black sheep of the family

You tried to teach me right from

wrong

Too much wine and too much song

Wonder how I got along

Goodbye Papa it's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the

sky

Now that the spring is in the air

Little children everywhere

When you see them, I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the wine and the song

Like the seasons have all gone

We had joy, we had fun

We had seasons in the sun

But the wine and the song

Like the seasons have all gone

Goodbye Michelle my little one

You gave me love and helped me

find the sun

And every time that I was down

You would always come around

And get my feet back on the ground

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the

sky

Now that the spring is in the air

With the flowers everywhere

I wish that we could both be there

A woman was watching her husband

Thinking he was trying to weigh less

with this maneuver, she commented,

"I don't think that is going to help."

"Sure it will," he said. "It's the only

The judge wanted to make sure the

"Do you know what the word 'oath'

"Sure do," says the witness. "Oath

means if I swear to a lie, I gotta stick
