A SHOWCOACH REPORT THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE

OF THE WEST RIDING OF

YORKSHIRE RESIDENTIAL TRIP.

On Sunday morning 30th June we departed for Yorkshire by coach. There were 26 members all looking forward

to our 4 day visit around North Yorkshire. Our first stop was at Burghley House in Stamford. This is a beautiful stately home which has belonged to the Cecil family for over 400 years. Here we were able to explore the house and garden at our own pace and also enjoy a leisurely lunch. After this we departed for Harrogate and the Crowne Plaza Hotel where we were based for the next 3 nights. This was a very modern business hotel but the staff looked after us very well and made us welcome. Following a good night’s rest the next morning we embarked on a walking tour of Harrogate with our Blue Badge Guide taking in the principal sights of this lovely Spa town. Our tour ended at Betty’s famous Tea Room where everyone enjoyed coffee and the local delicious cakes! We then met our coach and driver who took us to Ripon along with our Blue Badge Guide. Here we had a short walking tour of the town and then after lunch visited the beautiful Ripon Cathedral. Here we were given a tour by the resident guides which was very enlightening. Then back to our hotel and a welcoming drink in the bar before dinner. On the second day we travelled to Salt’s Mill which is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire. The Mill has now become a unique and fascinating centre for contemporary arts. Our guided tour took us around the 1853 Gallery which is devoted to the

Bradford born artist David Hockney. Over 300 pictures are on display showing all facets of his artistic life. We also had some free time to visit Saltaire Village, next to the Mill, which had been built for the workers by Sir Titus Salt.Following our visit here we then headed for Harewood House in Leeds. This was another beautiful stately home this time belonging to the Earl of Harewood. Here we were given a very interesting tour of the ground floor of the house where we saw lovely Chippendale furniture, fine porcelain and outstanding art collections. After this we had some free time to visit the grounds. On our final day after checking out of the Hotel we drove to Wakefield to visit The Hepworth Art Gallery. After being given coffee etc on arrival we were given a guided tour of this amazing gallery. Only opened in 2011 it is situated on the waterfront of the city where Barbara Hepworth was born. Following on from this we drove to the last place of our tour. This was The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The Arboretum is made up of 150 acres of trees and memorials devoted to the theme of remembrance. After lunch we were given a guided tour taking into account various members requests as to which memorials we visited. This was a beautiful place to end our visit and everyone was amazed at the size of it and its peaceful surroundings Finally we left for our long drive back home. Everyone

said how much they had enjoyed their trip away visiting so many places in such a short space of time. We are now deciding as to where our next visit will take place! Why don’t you come along on the next residential trip in the company of like-minded companions.

RICHMOND UPON

THAMES LITERATURE

FESTIVAL

1-24 NOVEMBER 2019

Box Office opens 10am Tuesday 1 October 2019 Throughout November Richmond Borough will be hosting a diverse programme of events with an enthralling line up of authors, commentators and storytellers including London mudlark Lara Maiklem discussing her treasure trove of finds from the banks of the River Thames, writer & journalist Zeba Talkhani charting her experiences growing up in Saudi Arabia and her journey to find freedom. Take your pick from some of our finest historians: Alison Weir, Antonia Fraser, Kate Williams, Tracy Borman, Katie Hickman and Bettany Hughes, all appearing at this year’s festival.

Other highlights include Number 10’s first ever ‘Researcher in Residence’, Jack Brown, going behind one of the world’s most iconic doors, award-winning writers and mental health professionals Nathan Filer & Joanna Cannon challenging assumptions on what it means to be mad. There is also the opportunity to spend a deliciously gothic evening with novelists Stacey Halls, Jess Kidd and Michelle Paver in the atmospheric setting of Strawberry Hill House.

There is also a fantastic programme of activities for families: a specially curated event celebrating 19th century fossil finder Mary Anning, a fantasy writing workshop with Steve Feasey, and children’s illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson’s wonderous creations Amelia Fang and Evil Emperor Penguin battling it out in a riotous afternoon of live drawing and story-telling! Tickets can be booked online at www.richmondliterature.com by phone 020 8831 6494 or by visiting Orleans House Gallery on Twickenham Riverside from 1 October.
