PARENT BULLETIN Friday 2nd March 2018 NEXT WEEK: Week 2 Timetable AIR 50,900 EARTH 52,759 FIRE 50,175 WATER 48,071 Dear Parents/Carers Although the weather has hit the area hard this week, it has not dampened the spirits of everyone at Crestwood. Before the snow called a halt to the week on Thursday there were some amazing activities going on throughout the school. The week started with an awesome assembly all about love and wellbeing, conducted by our wonderful Mrs Lehrle-Fry. It got us all thinking about the importance of creating a warm and welcoming community, and again, the importance of looking out for one another! ‘The daily culture of the school is the primary factor that supports students’ development and academic learning.’ This was backed up by some great news for lots of Year 6 students and their parents as they received confirmation that they have secured Crestwood as their school of choice for September. It was great to see them excited that they will become part of our family. We look forward to welcoming them to Crestwood later this year. This week has seen the rehearsals for Annie get into full swing. We have been taking a number of sneaky peeks over the week, it is going to be a brilliant production. The cast and crew are working very hard. Make sure you secure your tickets for next week’s shows. Tickets are going fast. There are performances on Wednesday through to Saturday. Year 7 have braved the bitter weather this week and got stuck in with rugby. Please have a look at our Facebook page to to see them performing their version of the Haka. Very scary! Year 10 and Year 11 have been hard at work in Maths this week. On the Shakespeare campus, Year 10 students have been consolidating their understanding of expanding brackets. Year 11 have been brushing up on their volume knowledge while playing revision jenga. They managed to answer 2, 3 and even 5 mark exam questions which they didn't get correct in their last mock exam. While on the Cherbourg campus, Year 11 have been revising hard, by posing the question radius or diameter of a Circle given area or circumference. Both campuses saw a large selection of current student artwork being displayed around school buildings. It is brilliant to see the creativity and hard work being celebrated in this way. There has also been some great food technology going on across the school. Year 8 on the Shakespeare campus cooked up a storm with some mouth watering cheesecakes. Well done to Amy, Thomas and Aaliyah for being awarded star baker status this week. On the Cherbourg campus, in their GCSE class, Year 9 got stuck in to creating spring rolls. Mr. Nash tool the role of chief taster when he popped in to see how they were doing. Finally, a few dates for everyone’s diaries: The Year 11 Parents’ Evening has been arranged for Thursday 15th March, on the Shakespeare campus. Year 7 internal exams start on Thursday 15th March The Wembley trip to watch England vs Italy is on Tuesday 27th March We hope everyone wraps up warm this weekend and enjoys the snow! Have a safe and restful weekend and look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Monday for another energy packed week! SAFEGUARDING ADVICE - ONLINE GAMING

Online gaming means you can play in real time with people across the world through a computer, games console, tablet or smartphone connected to the internet. Games can offer children a world of adventure to immerse themselves in, but it’s important to understand how children can stay safe and what games are appropriate for their age.

What do I need to know about online gaming?

Gaming is a fun and sociable way to spend time, encouraging teamwork and developing skills. All good stuff, but there are a few things you need to be aware of:

● Get involved by finding out what type of games your child enjoys and making sure they’re appropriate for their age. ● Some games let children play and chat with anyone in the world. This means they might come across offensive

language and bullying. ● Not everyone online is who they say they are. Children should avoid giving out personal details that could identify

them or their location. ● Some games encourage players to buy extra elements during the game – children have been known to run up large

bills without realising. ● In extreme cases bullying, also known as ‘griefing’, can be used as a tactic to win games. Children may find

themselves either bullying or being bullied.

Keeping your child safe whilst online gaming

There is nothing like sitting down with your children and joining in some of their games to find out just why they find them such fun. Here’s how to keep their gaming experience healthy:

● Find out what sort of games your children enjoy – do they prefer role-play games, sports games, strategy and quest games or first-person shooter games?

● Ask who they play with online, who they meet and talk to, and what kind of language is being used in live chat (usually via headphones). Gaming sites often have ways of reporting abusive chat and excluding anti-social players. Make sure your child knows how to do this

● Especially for younger children, change the settings on your tablet or smartphone to ‘airplane’ mode. That way, they can play the game offline without making accidental purchases or connecting with someone they don’t know

● Make sure you and your family agree what games can be played and that children understand why some games are allowed and others aren’t. Agree how long they’re allowed to play for

● Teach your children to protect themselves – remind them not to share personal information and to keep gaming friends in the game only rather than adding them to their other social networks

● Read each game’s advice for parents and play the game yourself to help you understand more about how the game your child is playing works and its appropriateness.

Use this interactive guide to parental controls to find out more about keeping your children safe when they’re online gaming:

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

YEAR 9 - FOOD TECHNOLOGY

“Well done to Charlotte for sending me the pictures of her eatwell plate cake! My year 9s were asked to get creative and come up with a homework project based on a balanced diet

and the eatwell guide. They were told that the sky was the limit and this is what one of them produced...”

“I am so very proud. Well done Charlotte!”

Miss Davey ξ

We’re very proud too - that’s amazing Charlotte!

This is held in the library resource centres on each campus and staffed by teachers to support Y11.

Eastleigh Basics Bank

To all parents... with Easter fast approaching, we are collecting items for the basics bank again. Any donations would be most welcome on both Shakespeare and Cherbourg Campus. Please see the items most needed below and the list of things that they have the most of. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Items in most urgent need are highlighted in bold: shower gel, disposable razors, deodorant, soft drinks (squash / long-life juice / fizzy drinks etc), pasta, desserts (jelly, Angel Delight, sponge puddings etc), ketchup, crisps, laundry tablets, nappies (sizes 3+ to 6), dog food and cat food.

While we are always grateful for any food given to us, we do have plenty of stock of some products to last us for the next few months, specifically: tea, sweet biscuits, soup, tomatoes, tinned vegetables, kidney beans, baked beans, tinned fish, tinned and dried spaghetti, long grain rice, rice pudding and tinned custard.

Your support is much appreciated, Parent Support Team
