PHYSICAL ACTIVITY-ADOLESCENT/CHILD OBESITYBy Payton Strong

INTRODUCTION:

In this presentation you will be learning about child obesity and how it effects children today. You will also be learning how obesity can be prevented and how to live a healthy

life.

THE DEFINITION OF OBESITY

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is not the same as being overweight, which means weighing too

much. A person may be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water, as well as from

having too much fat.

FACTS ABOUT OBESITY

Obesity has doubled in children and tripled in teens over the past 30 years.

Over one third of the children and adolescents have been announced either overweight or obese in 2010.

Being obese can lead you to get Type 2 diabetes, which resists insulin. If left untreated can be life threatening.

WHAT CAUSES OBESITY? Genetics- Having obese relatives is sometimes the reason a child

is obese. Families have their own eating patterns and this could be passed down to the child and put them at risk for being obese.

Nutrition- Adolescents in America ages eight to 18 nowadays consume foods and drinks that are high in calories. Poor eating habits and overeating is also the cause of obesity.

Lack of Activity- Children today spend more time on their cell phones, video games, and watch TV than they do playing outside. Not getting enough physical activity can result in gaining more weight and put you at risk for obesity.

HEALTH ISSUES

High Cholesterol

Having high cholesterol is when you develop fatty deposits in your blood

vessels which eventually make it difficult for blood to flow through your arteries. This leads you to have an even higher risk for heart attacks when you become

an adult.

High Blood Pressure

When you are obese you have a very high risk for

having high blood pressure. Having high

blood pressure means that your heart is having a

hard time pumping enough blood. When you

are obese, your heart works harder to pump as much blood as you need. This can lead to having

heart attacks and strokes.

HOW TO PREVENT OBESITY

Physical activity and eating healthy can lower your risk for being obese.

Eat This NOT This Do This NOT This

Eating healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, meats etc. and staying away from foods that are high in calories can improve your dietary health. Don’t skip meals!

Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner actually helps you lose

weight.

For children, it is very important that they are active throughout

the day. Kids should be active for at least an hour a day, for at least

5 days and engage in school sporting activities such as

football, baseball, soccer, etc.

STATISTICS

This is an example of kids with obesity before and after

receiving care in Athena health practices.

IN CONCLUSION…

In conclusion, as you can see from the presentation there are too many

overweight children and teenagers that have bad eating habits and would rather play on their electronic devices instead of going outside. If we can get

kids to eat better and to go outside and play then they will live better and

healthier lives.
