THE INTERNATIONALISTS

Exhibition: 8 August - 31 August 1983.

HILDA BERNSTEIN was born in London. She spent half of her life in South Africa, where she married 'Rusty' Bernstein. Due to the political insecurity of South Africa's mandatory white dictatorship, otherwise known as apartheid, she and Rusty were forced to flee that racially biased conflagration. Living in London, Hilda Bernstein began painting and printmaking, all the while drawing on her links with the African continent. The larger part of her works depicts the harsh realities of apartheid's. genocidal attempt, and the conditions in which that white -run business leaves it's black inhabitants.RUDI PATTERSON is a self-taught artist, born in Jamaica. He trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. It was during a long convalescence that he made painting his way of life. This artist's work has been described as reflecting 'the spellbinding natural setting of his Caribbean home, with it's generous warmth, and the epic mingling hues of it's sea, sky and vegetation . . . ' I n the view of Peoples Gallery, his work is tinged with the lustre of the atmospheric Caribbean.MIRIAM KATZ lived in Zimbabwe where she taught arts and crafts, but was born in Germany. On returning to Europe and London to live, she began working in terra-cotta, cold cast bronze, sandstone and alabaster. Her sculpture reveals a political feeling for her subjects, and her sense of design direction is paramount; which is reflected through the number of her pieces in private collections. We at Peoples Gallery are pleased to be able to present these artists who all advocate community of interests and friendly co-operation between all races.
