Cape Town is deceptive. The inner city or the original, historic Cape Town city is very very small, and is often seen as being the city in its entirety. It is no longer the epicentre of Cape town, but it iswhere the story of the city begins.

This halfday journey through the innercity the city puts the guest in touch with its very earliest days asthe home of the Khoisan, right through to 10 years into the future and what is anticipated. It's not widelyknown, even by Capetonians, that the nation's first banks started here; that Cape Town as acommercial city began with the Camissa River, which flowed down the mountain and into the ocean, atthe point where the train station is; that before the arrival of the Dutch there were thousands of yearsother history and stories.

(The City Tour and Township Futures package looks at the city as an inclusive unit. It explores theoriginal city in the morning, as per description in 001 for City Tour, and adds Township Futures as anafternoon component).

You will hear a lot of things said about the Cape Flats and the Townships.

"The other side of town", "The danger zone", "Are you crazy, don't go there!"

These are just some of the mild things said.

Consider the facts:

Of Cape Town's population, the majority of us live in townships. Which means that the largestdistribution of the city's spend comes from the townships.

Of families living in houses, the majority are owned by the residents. Which means that there is veryvery little home loan debt, if any. Compare that with suburban areas, where the majority of residentsare NOT homeowners, and where the majority of people have major debt.

Consider that Khayelitsha is the fastest growing suburb in the country, with a large middle class.

And finally at least for the purposes of this writeup consider that the future of Cape Town lies in thetownships. That as the city grows and expands, it is expanding into the townships.

So what does the future hold?

On this four hour excursion we take the visitor into several of our townships, looking at some majorsites and projects of transformation, and meeting some of the people that are making this change. Welook at how the city and its townships were formed, and how the townships are being shaped into thefuture. It looks at models for economic and social integration. It looks at major transport changes. Itlooks at ways that townships might connect to each other and to the city as a whole.

And most importantly, this tour looks at the townships as the centre of the city, and not some fringesection. That is the most crucial difference in thinking.

Table Mountain is not simply the table topped mountain the world knows so well, it is an entiremountain range, stretching from the Atlantic down the Peninsula to the Indian Ocean. It is itself anisland, and the city has developed around it.

On the Peninsula Route, we follow the perimeter of the Table Mountain range, going full circle aroundthe mountain, passing incredible seascapes, and taking in some of the most magical sightseeingpossible.

There is the majestic pass called Chapman’s Peak. There are quirky little suburbs like the arty KalkBay, the naval Simonstown and the natural bay called Hout Bay. There are two oceans, the Indian andthe Atlantic. There is the Cape Point Nature Reserve, at the Good of Good Hope, the point of thePeninsula where these two oceans meet. There are the crazy penguins that hated the cold, justoutside of Simonstown, and there are troops of baboons and some deer and other animals, in additionto some of the most incredible fynbos and plant biodiversity.

The Peninsula Route is a magical blend of all these elements.

Table Mountain and Robben Island are grouped together because they provide two poles of story, twoperspectives on history, and from a physical point of view, they are two significant spaces.

Part I. Table MountainTo start with the mountain, because from here we can see the entire city, and its important to start withan overview. It really helps to shape the city, physically and from a narrative point of view, in your mind.

We begin with a look at the `mother in the mountain', from the foot of Lion's Head, which provideslovely insight into the city, and from there we ascend Table Mountain itself by cableway. From here wecan see almost to the beginning of time, and so our guide maps out the city physically, and in doing so,provides a good introduction to what has happened between the physically spaces of the city, over along period of time. We have plenty of time up here to enjoy the elevated perspective, walk about and

enjoy the good air. We can walk to Maclears Beacon if we like.

Part II. Robben IslandRobben Island, known most famously for being the prison that Nelson Mandela was held in for the bestpart of 27 years. To visit this prison island is not only to commemorate in some way the actions andchangemaking decisions of leaders like Mandela, but also to see the city from a different perspectiveand with a changed mindset.

(NOTE: this programme is subject to change depending on weather and other conditions. If necessary,Robben Island tour takes place in the morning, and Table Mountain visit in the afternoon. If the weatherdoes not allow for either visit to take place, guests can use their tickets to experience both on anotherday)

Our Full Day Wine Route takes in three of our favourite estates, in two sometimes three different wineregions. Some of these favourites include:

Jordan (www.jordanwines.co.za), Stellenbosch Overgaauw (www.overgaauw.co.za), Stellenbosch Hartenberg (www.hartenberg.co.za), Stellenbosch Solms Delta (www.solmsdelta.co.za), Franschhoek Moreson (www.moreson.co.za), Franschhoek My Wyn (www.mywynfranschhoek.co.za), Franschhoek La Motte (www.lamotte.com), Franschhoek The Township Winery (www.townshipwinery.com), Philippi Babylonstoren (www.babylonstoren.com), Franschhoek Steenberg (www.steenbergvineyards.co.za), Constantia Klein Constantia (www.kleinconstantia.com), Constantia

We recommend three tastings at three estates, there are many wines to taste per estate, and theservings are large. After two tastings, most people’s palettes are loose, and a little worn, so we usuallydo two tastings in the morning, followed by lunch with a tasting combined, and then in the afternoon athird tasting and perhaps a cheese tasting too.

Sometimes we include a fourth tasting, depending on how our guests are feeling! But mostly we findthat three covers it well.

Our Half Day Wine Route takes in two of our favourite estates in one wine region, such as Constantia.

Cape Town is a fashion city to the core. We have a rich history of bespoke tailoring and dressmaking.Everybody's auntie was a seamstress, and everybody's uncle ran a fabric wholesaler. This has alwaysbeen a city of elegant eccentricity. To this day, old school tailors exist all over the city, and, while thebespoke suit is not as in vogue as it once was in the city, a whole new generation of design ideas andinnovations make Cape Town something of a fashion capital in Africa.

Today we have so many designers. We continue to be surprised at how many there are in Cape Town, some are household names, some are working out of households. And the level of innovation andsurprise is high.

There’s Greer Valley’s Kushn, blending Kente fabrics and local leather into the most beautifulaccessories for tech devices. The Movement in Observatory must have the world's only corridor

Cape Town is an incredibly musical city. This is the city where music is at its most creative in SouthAfrica, something which is due partly to the natural environment we have, which encourages creativity, but mainly it is because of the history of the city and the diversity of people and cultures and soundsthat have ended up here.

On this special music journey we are doing to travel deep inside the jazz music of the city, by visitinglocal jazz musicians in their homes.

Part one is a visit to the home of a jazz musician for dinner, with music and conversation, and part twois a visit either to the home of a second musician for a nightcap, or to a jazz venue for the late set.

The experience is intimate and deep, full of music and engagement and fun. It is a unique opportunityto meet local musicians away from club stages, and an excellent way to discover more about CapeTown and the lives of the people that live in it through the music.

Our hosts include will Cape Town musicians young and old, all of them composers and performers. These are the musicians defining the sound of the city.

If you have an interest in indigenous cultures, then this is a mustdo in Cape Town.

On this journey guests enjoy deep insight into how ancient culture is relevant today. This is not a themepark, not a cultural village it is a contemporary journey into ancient indigenous lifestyle, on an 850hectare estate on the West Coast, just an hour and a half or so out of Cape Town. It is a beautifullyassembled and progressive project, celebrating ancient indigenous San.

We'll collect you at 1030am and take you on a beautiful drive along the West coast to the estate. Weare there around midday for lunch at the estate's excellent restaurant, they serve up exquisiteinterpretations on classic indigenous dishes, with freshly baked farm bread.

The tour is at 2pm so lunch is a leisurely affair, perhaps with some wine from the West Coast.

The San tour ends at about 4pm, after which we have another 30minutes or so just to relax in the sunor enjoy the shop.

And then by 1630 we depart for the city, to be back by 1800.
