WALTER SCOTT’S
A: Hardly. After the ABC sitcom ended in 2014, Levy, 27, made a string of movies, including Monster Trucks, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore and Don’t Breathe, and a guest appearance on Twin Peaks. She’ll return to television as Joy Greenfield, the assistant talent coordinator for The Tonight Show, on the Seeso series There’s . . . Johnny!, streaming Aug. 24. It’s a fictionalized behind-the-scenes look at the late-night show in the 1970s.
HOLLIDAY GRAINGER
Twins are on our minds ever since Beyoncé and Jay-Z released a photo of their newborns, Sir Carter and Rumi (above). Here are other celeb pairs who were womb mates.
NFL stars Tiki and Ronde Barber, 42. Tiki played for the New York Giants; Ronde for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Actor Kiefer Sutherland, 50, and sister Rachel, a post-production
supervisor.
Actresses and identical twins Tamera and Tia Mowry, 39.
Rockers Joel and Benji Madden, 38, Good Charlotte band members married to Nicole Richie and Cameron Diaz, respectively.
What impressed you about the story? There were so many different levels of society, from the rich guy all the way down to the fishmonger and the struggling artist. In that respect, Amsterdam felt like a con-temporary, cosmopolitan city. What about Maria did you relate to? She is unswaying in her morals. I think Maria is one of the only characters with solidity and earthi-ness that feels a bit of a grounding in the midst of this mad story.
Which of your roles have you enjoyed the most? I just loved Bonnie Parker in Bonnie & Clyde [2013], because she was such good fun and she was so sassy. Playing Bonnie, I felt like I had such confidence. You’re going to co-star as Robin in Strike, the
BBC series based on detective novels by J.K. Rowling. Were you a Rowling fan? I grew up
reading Harry Potter; I am such a massive fan. She creates such strong, believable worlds.
With roles in Cinderella, My Cousin Rachel and Bonnie & Clyde, Holliday Grainger, 29, adds another “period-piece” role in Tulip Fever, in theaters Aug. 25. She plays Maria, the maid to a woman (Alicia Vikander) who begins a passionate affair with a poor artist (Dane DeHaan) during the tulip mania of 17th-century Amsterdam, when prices of tulip bulbs reached extraordinarily high levels and then collapsed.
MAKE IT A DOUBLE
How up close and personal did she have to get with a chicken for Tulip Fever? Go to Parade.com/grainger to find out.

A: Yes. The uplifting film, in theaters Aug. 25, is based on the real-life story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett). Spurlock was ordered to shut down his tiny church, but a group of refugees from Burma farmed the church’s fertile property to pay the bills and save it. Corbett, 56, best remem-bered for his roles on TV’s Sex and the City and Northern Exposure and in My Big Fat Greek Wed-ding, says, “One of the best decisions I made in 30 years is saying yes to this movie.”

What four-digit number, when multiplied by four, equals the original number with its digits in reverse order? The challenge is to solve this puzzle only with reasoning, not with math skills.
—David Hayes, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Ah, this is a little gem, readers. You can solve it with pure logic. (And maybe a bit of patience.) The answer appears at the end of the column.
Our area has ponds that hold storm water runoff, and they’re mostly dry until it rains. Once they fill with water, little fish can be seen swimming around. How do they get there?
—Scott Clark, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
People everywhere are amazed by the seemingly magical ap-pearance of fish in ponds that never held them (maybe). How do they get there? Sometimes they’re introduced by eggs or are inadvertently carried by waterfowl that land on the water. Heavy rains that wash water from nearby bodies of water may do the same. And in areas with regular droughts, you may find fish called mudminnows (not actually min-nows), which burrow into the mud and become dormant until the next rain fills up their pools again.
Answer:
The answer is 2,178 (multiplied by four equals 8,712). Readers, email me your step-by-step method for solving this
puzzle. (No attachments.) I will post the clearest solution online at a future date.
Imagine waking up almost every night
scratching at itchy skin on your hands, arms
and legs. Maybe you wake up to red lines
on your body each morning from scratching
during the night. Then, during the day, the
itch is constant and maddening – but there
doesn’t seem to be any visible reason for it.
Perhaps you’re feeling the urge to scratch as
you read this.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
As we age, everyone’s skin experiences dra-
matic changes. The fatty, protective layer
under the skin diminishes. We also experi-
ence thinner, fragile skin that wrinkles,
bruises easily or even tears. However, the
most common skin complaint for seniors is
itchy skin. The itching – there are many
medical names for it – is very real. You ar-
en’t crazy. It’s not just in your head.
“Age-related itchy skin is a condition
faced by many older adults,” says Dr. Roger
&HLOOH\ D ERDUGFHUWLÀHG GHUPDWRORJLVW
“Using a quality moisturizer can help
diminish the feelings of itch and dryness, but
for a product to be truly effective, it needs a
medicine intended to relieve itch.”
There are all sorts of over-the-counter
anti-itch medicines and creams, but they ar-
en’t all created equal. Some may have very

them are “corticosteroid” (basically a fancy
word for topical steroid) based creams or
gels, like hydrocortisone. While these typi-
cally do reduce itch after one or more uses,
they can have side effects with long-term
use: thinning skin, irritation, dependency
and even more itch. That defeats the purpose
of an anti-itch cream, don’t you think?
Then there are others that are formulated

line of products. Hydrocortisone used to be
one of the only anti-itch options for seniors,
but now, thanks to products like DerMend
Moisturizing Anti-Itch Lotion, that’s
all changing.
“Now there are very effective, steroid-free
itch relieving creams and lotions available,”
says Dr. Ceilley. “They’re designed to
address the needs of sensitive, aging skin.”
DerMend Moisturizing Anti-Itch Lotion
was recently introduced by Ferndale
Healthcare, Inc., a company that’s dedicated
to helping older Americans deal with age-
related changes to their skin.
Unlike the steroid-based creams, DerMend
Moisturizing Anti-Itch Lotion won’t thin
your skin or result in additional itch and
irritation. The anti-itch formula uses moistur-
izers to soothe your skin and improve its
overall condition and texture, combined with
a medicine that’s proven to effectively – and
quickly – relieve itch.

the best stories just might be from the past. On the big screen, Dunkirk recently took us to the beaches of France during World War II. Ear-lier this year, Hidden Figures put us back in America’s space race. On the small screen, Timeless sent a trio back in time to famous events, from Lincoln’s assas-sination to Watergate; Genius explored Einstein’s life; we got a look at the wild side of William Shakespeare in Will; The Crown did a deep dive into the reign of Queen Elizabeth II; and Turn: Washington’s Spies told the true story of America’s first spy ring.
“History instantly gives a story relevance,” says Ben Mankiewicz, host of Turner Classic Movies. “We can relate to it. We either know it or we feel like we know it, or we think, Well, this is something I should know.”
The trend of looking backward continues this fall with more movies, TV shows and podcasts that delve into the past, from spies and sports to time travel and scandals.

Parade explores how history makes for some great
entertainment—and teaches us a thing or two.
From the
BlastsCertain themes, like the American frontier of HBO’s
Westworld or British society in shows like The Crown and Call the Midwife, will always hold our fascination, says Mankiewicz, 50, who also reviews for the online show What the Flick?! on the Young Turks network.
War is another topic that resonates across the decades, says Mankiewicz, who gives high marks to Saving Private Ryan, the 1959 Korean War saga Pork Chop Hill and direc-tor Stanley Kubrick’s World War I drama Paths of Glory.
The past is a moving target. As scholars turn over new rocks of evidence and modern forensics reveal fresh lay-ers of insight, what we thought to be true is revised and updated in all forms of entertainment.
“History is not set in stone,” Mankiewicz says. “We’re learning more and more how things we grew up believ-ing were kinda true. So hopefully movies and TV shows will bring us closer to understanding what made us the way we are.” —Neil Pond

for onscreen realism, nothing gets you closer than a documentary. Once primarily an “educational” subset of films released in theaters, documentaries are now widely available—and very popular—on the small screen, like ESPN’s long-running inside-sports series 30 for 30, CNN’s The Seventies and Netflix’s acclaimed Making a Murderer, which won four Emmys. ESPN’s O.J.: Made in America won a 2016
Oscar for Best Documentary.Filmmaker Ken Burns and his pro-
duction partner and co-director Lynn Novick unveil their latest documentary, The Vietnam War, a new 10-part, 18-hour series, Sept. 17 on PBS. It joins their other collaborations, which include Baseball, The War and The Civil War.
Parade asked Burns and Novick, why Vietnam, why now? Here’s what they said:
“The seeds of many of the troubles that beset us today—alienation, resentment and cynicism; mistrust of our govern-ment and each other; breakdown of civil discourse and civic institutions—were sown during the Vietnam War. Until we find a way to come to terms with this unsettled and enormously consequential event, its ghosts will continue to haunt us.
“Far too often when Americans think about Vietnam, we are thinking only about ourselves. But we cannot begin to make sense of the war without a deep understanding of history, culture, beliefs and social norms of our enemies and our allies, without knowing what they were fighting for, and against.
“Perhaps, if we listen to each other with open hearts, we can find some peace in the profound truths this epic tragedy can teach about the human condition, loyalty, resilience, justice, forgiveness and, ultimately, reconciliation.”

BEN MANKIEWICZ’S HISTORY LESSONSThe TCM host’s picks for most educational:
1. Lincoln [2012]. Daniel Day-Lewis won an Oscar for his portrayal of the 16th president in the Steven Spielberg–directed biopic. “We know Tony Kushner’s screenplay was adapted from Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book, and Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis both did tremendous jobs researching.”
2. Selma [2014]. David Oyelowo stars as Martin Luther King Jr. in this chronicle of the historic 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Mont-gomery, Ala. “There will be some quibbling about the politics, but this is a picture of an overall critical time in America, and that’s valuable.”
3. Saving Private Ryan [1998] Tom Hanks leads an all-star cast in this acclaimed drama based on the events surrounding WWII’s D-Day invasion. “Not a true story but, by all accounts, one that helps us understand what combat is like—and the absurdity of war, even when it’s a noble cause.”

HEIRLOOM TOMATO MARGARITA
Squeeze juice from 2–3 medium heirloom tomatoes through a fine-mesh sieve to equal 4 oz. Sprinkle salt or seasoned salt on a small plate. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add tomato juice, 4 oz tequila, 3 oz fresh lime juice, 1 oz Grand Marnier and 1 oz simple syrup; shake. Rub lime wedges around rims of 2 double Old Fashioned glasses; roll rims in salt. Fill glasses with ice. Strain margarita evenly into each glass. Garnish with heirloom cherry tomatoes and orange peel. Serves 2.
Visit Parade.com/tomato for Hughes’ easy Heirloom Tomato Bread Salad recipe.
Your favorite late-summer cocktail is sure to be this Heirloom Tomato Margarita from Paten Hughes, who stars in the quirky semi-autobiographical web series Heirloom. (Catch the first
episode at Parade.com/heirloom.) Like her character Emily, Hughes moved to a small tomato farm in Healdsburg, Calif., in the heart of Sonoma County’s wine country. And she really has turned it into a thriving side gig, selling her crop to local chefs—a welcome break from the ups and downs of an acting career.
“I’m unable to cook anything outside the tomato world,” Hughes admits. But with her tasty crop, she can’t really go wrong. The same goes for you too, with juicy summer tomatoes from your own garden or farmers’ market. —Alison Ashton
Store tomatoes at room temperature out of direct sunlight. Refrigerating them makes them mealy.
‘‘This is one of my favorite summer cocktails: light and refreshing. Careful, though—the tequila sneaks up on you!’
—Paten Hughes, actress/tomato farmer
Tomato Time!
Tasty Heirlooms4Black Russian • Hughes likes to use these deep-colored and -flavored tomatoes in salads.
Indigo Rose • When ripe, these striking tomatoes have purple “shoulders” and deep-red bottoms.
Lemon Boy • Hughes loves this yellow variety for its sunny pop of color.
Sun Gold • These supersweet orange cherry tomatoes “taste just like candy,” says Hughes. They’re easy to grow in containers, making them a good variety for novice gardeners.
