P3O the Linchpin in methods This overview shows you the connection between P3O and the OGC Best Practice methods.

P3O has the same DNA, so as a practice and in terminology you will recognize the connections. However, P3O can also be used in environments that are using other projectmanagement methods, such as the PMBOK (PMI).

P3O functionsUse this overview as a checklist to identify your current activities, to decide which ones you want to develop or to make

visible what the priorities are in your organization. Copy this overview, get your marker and create a ‘warroom’ where you show the P3O functions and priorities in your organization!

P3O modelAn example of what the model could look like. Identify your own P3O model by drawing the connections between the

project, programme and portfolio offices in your organization, as well as the relationships with the ‘standard’ organization (the business). This way you can visualize the information flows, roles and capacity (resources).

P3O modelBut the model could also look like this one. Note that the Portfolio Office is permanent and provides the Business

‘Intelligence’ to enable decisionmaking at strategic level. (Run the Business, Change the Business)

P3O LifecycleDoing nothing is going backwards. The business will change continually, which requires different levels of maturity or

prioritization each time. Therefore the P3O model is a flexible model, which changes along with the needs organization. If you are familiar with Prince2 or MSP you will recognize the steps in this ‘circle of life’ of P3O.

P3O in the Netherlands

In 2009 the first Dutch professionals received their P3O certification. You will find them in the Dutch group ‘P3O gecertificeerden ‘on Linkedin. www.linkedin.com

P3O has been introduced in 2009 within IPMA in a special edition of ‘Projectie’, the magazine op IPMA Netherlands: the PMO Special (december 2009).

In my P3O article I have introduced the P3O model, the terminology and the benefits for portfolio, programme and projectmanagers by asking ´what´s in it for me?´. That question was answered based on experience in the UK by Sue Vowler, P3O author and owner of Project Angels. Contact me if you like a copy of this article.

The P3O qualification started its march in 2010. By now several organizations offer P3O Foundation and/or Practitioner Courses and exams. APMG offers an open exam (selfstudy). Check the APMG website. www.apmg-international.com
