Preparing the unit for operation

12

Preparing the unit for operation You can connect the unit to the normal power supply (230 V ~ / 50 Hz).

The heat generated during operation must be dissipated through adequate air circulation. Therefore the unit should not be covered or inserted in an enclosed cabinet. Make sure there is a free space of at least 10 cm around the unit.

Improving station reception

The number and quality of the stations received depends on the receiving conditions at the installation location. Good reception can be obtained by using the FM telescopic aerial (25). This aerial must be fully extended to ensure the best possible reception.

The integrated MW aerial is adequate for receiving stations in the MW frequency range. You can rotate the unit to improve the quality of reception.

Inserting batteries Turn the unit so that you are able to open the battery

compartment (24) located underneath. To enjoy battery-powered operation you will need

eight alkaline batteries, type BABY, 1.5 V, LR14/C (not included). When inserting the batteries pay attention to their correct polarity. See the illustration in the battery compartment.

Replace the battery compartment cover carefully and ensure the latches on the cover engage in the housing.

Note: Make sure that only batteries of the same type are used. Never use a mixture of old and new batteries.

Use leak-proof batteries!

Important information concerning disposal Batteries can contain toxic substances which are harmful to the environment.

Operating the CD player

15

Operating the CD player General information concerning CDs/MP3 CDs

This unit is suitable for playing music CDs that are recorded with audio data (CD-DA or MP3 for CD-R and CD-RW). MP3 formats must be produced to ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2. Multisession CDs cannot be read.

In MP3/WMA mode, the terms "Folder" = Album and "Track" are crucial. “Folder” corresponds to the folder on the PC and “Track” corresponds to the file on a PC or a CD-DA track.

The unit sorts the albums and tracks of an album by name in alphabetical order. If you happen to prefer a different order, change the name of the track or the album and insert a number before the name.

When burning CD-Rs and CD-RWs with audio data, various problems can occur, which occasionally impair playback. Causes of this are incorrect software and hardware settings or the blank disc used. If such errors occur, you should contact the customer service department of your CD burner/software manufacturer or search for corresponding information - e.g. on the Internet.

Note:

When compiling audio CDs please observe the respective legal regulations and do not violate the copyrights of third parties.

Always keep the CD compartment closed to prevent dust from accumulating on the laser lens.

The unit can play CDs with MP3/WMA files and normal audio CDs (CD-DA). Other file types, e.g. *.doc, *.txt, *.pdf, etc. are not supported. Music files or playlists with the extensions *.AAC, *.DLF, *.M3U and *.PLS cannot be played.

Note: The wide variety of encoder software available means it is impossible to guarantee that all MP3 files will play flawlessly.

If there are faulty tracks/files, playback will resume at the next track/file.

When burning the CD it is advantageous to burn it at a low speed and to create the CD as a single session and finalised version.

Using the USB function

21

Using the USB function Note: The memory capacity of the USB device is not limited. Due to the wide variety of MP3 Flash Players, USB storage media and USB HDD drives available, it cannot be guaranteed that every model will be supported. USB version 1.0 and 2.0 devices are supported. When connecting USB media the unit or the medium may “freeze” as a result of electrostatic charging. If this occurs, carry out a reset (see page 2).

Inserting the storage medium Connect the USB medium using the USB port (16). Set the FUNCTION switch (20) to USB/CARD; the

unit switches on. Press the USB/CARD button (6) to select USB or

SD/MMC mode (only in STOP mode). The display changes to “USB” and the data located

on the storage medium is read. The USB medium need not be switched on. The total number of the medium's albums and tracks is displayed.

Before starting to use the medium, wait until all of its content has been read to ensure that all of the necessary information has been read. If a storage medium is not inserted or cannot be read, the NO USB indicator appears in the display (17).

The playback of the first track starts automatically. Stop playback: Press the STOP button (11); the

total number of albums and tracks appears in the display (17).

Functions Other operations and playback functions are as described under “Playing a disc”, see page 17.

Removing the storage medium Simply remove the USB storage medium or MP3

Flash Player by disconnecting it.

If the memory card is inserted into the card slot the wrong way round, the card will not be recognised. The card itself or the data it contains may be damaged as a result.

Push the card into the SD/MMC slot (18) with the label facing upwards all the way until it clicks into place audibly.

Set the FUNCTION switch (20) to USB/CARD; the unit switches on.

Keep pressing the USB/CARD button (6) to select USB or SD/MMC mode (only in STOP mode).

The MP3/WMA files are scanned and the total number of tracks appears in the display (29).

Before starting to use the medium, wait until all of its content has been read to ensure that all of the necessary information has been read. If a storage medium is not inserted or cannot be read, the NO CARD indicator appears in the display (29).

The playback of the first track starts automatically. Stop playback: Press the STOP button (11); the

total number of tracks appears in the display (17).

Functions Other operations and playback functions are as described under “Playing a disc”, see page 17.

Removing the storage medium Remove the card by pressing it inwards until it audibly disengages and then pull it out.

Note: The SD/MMC slot has priority over the USB port in the event that both are occupied. Switching between the USB port and the CARD slot is possible in Stop mode only. If an SD/MMC card is inserted during USB playback, the USB playback stops and the first track of the SD/MMC card is played back. If a USB medium is inserted during SD/MMC playback, the playback from the SD/MMC medium stops. Then the first track of the SD/MMC card is played back.

Cleaning the unit

Electric shock! In order to avoid the risk of electric shock do not clean the unit using a wet cloth or running water. Remove the mains plug before cleaning.

CAUTION! Do not use any scrub sponges, cleaning powder and solvents such as alcohol or petrol.

Clean the housing with a soft cloth moistened with water.

CD information

Always keep the CD in its case and only hold it by the edges. The shiny, rainbow-coloured surface must not be touched and should always be clean. Do not stick any paper or tape to the label side of the disc. The CD should be protected from strong sunlight and sources of heat, such as radiators.

A CD should not be left in a car that is parked in direct sunlight, as the internal temperature of the car can

become very hot. Clean any fingerprints and dust on the recorded side using a clean, dry cloth.

When cleaning CDs do not use any record care products, such as record sprays, cleaning fluids, antistatic sprays or any solvents, e.g. petrol, thinners or other commercially available chemicals. It may be possible to remove stubborn stains by using a damp chamois.

Wipe from the centre of the disc to the edge.

Circular motions when cleaning cause scratches. This can result in malfunctions during playback.
