They’re taking part in Healthy Family Home, a new health and wellness program for families that was recently introduced by the Y, with help from the Pajaro Valley Community Health Trust. The California Center for Public Health Advocacy has reported that over a third of Pajaro Valley children are overweight or obese. That’s a staggering statistic, but it’s not just children. In most cases, it is entire families who are overweight. The Y’s Healthy Family Home program was devel- oped to bring low income families together and help them develop healthier habits through increased physical activity and nutrition training… While finding out how fun it is to play together as a family. Tonight, at the Y, families participating in the program are learning how to read food labels so they can steer clear of unhealthy foods and make sure their families are getting the nutrients they need in their diet… But this is just part of what Healthy Family Home is all about. Focusing on the five healthy lifestyle pillars of Eat- ing Healthy, Playing Every Day, Getting Together, Going Outside and Sleeping Well, the 12-week program teaches families that healthy living begins at home. Each participating family is given a work book and coached by Healthy Family Home coordinator, Kristian ‘Healthy Family Home’ Gets Off to a Great Start at the Y Flores, on how to develop an activity goal and schedule for the whole family. They have meetings with a nutritionist on a weekly basis, learning how to eat healthy on a bud- get. They also have full access to the Y’s facilities for a low monthly fee that is subsidized by the Health Trust and the Y. “We were booked solid for the first two 12-week sessions as soon as we announced the program,” says Kristian, “There is an obvious need for programs like this in the Pajaro Valley. What’s unique about our program is that each family has the support of nine other families. It’s a community with a shared goal: Learning how to live a healthy lifestyle.” Since it started, 3 weeks ago, families taking part in the program have been meeting or exceeding their goals. Many families have developed a routine of coming to the Y every evening, swimming together as a family and then working out on the fitness equipment or taking part in various YMCA fitness programs like Zumba, basketball, Latin dance and step class. “We Love it! I feel like it’s a great opportunity for my family,” says Alicia, a single mother of four, “My kids had been going to counseling and I can see a change in them since we started Healthy Family Home. Swimming at the Y everyday has helped raise their self-esteem and the exercise has opened them up. Before, they were very shy and self- conscious.” Reservations are currently being taken for future Healthy Family Home sessions. Shorter days and cooler nights mean harvest time in the Pajaro Valley and the season for Wine and Roses! The Board of Directors of the Pajaro Valley Community Health Trust invites you to join them on Friday, November 4th for the 28th Annual Evening of Wine and Roses Event at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville. Event proceeds help support the Health Trust’s mission to improve the quality of life and health for all Pajaro Valley residents.
As always, supporters of this festive annual fund raiser can look forward to tasting the finest wines made in the Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation, enjoying gourmet hors d’oeuvres prepared by area restaurants and caterers and purchasing beautiful Pajaro Valley Roses.
Additionally, our lively silent and oral auctions will again feature an array of exciting items for purchase, led by award-winning auctioneer Rob Slawinski of the Slawinski Auction Company.
