I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Welcome to the Kaegebein Elementary School family community! We are veryproud of our excellent educational program and of the cooperative relationshipwe have with the parents of our students and the Grand Island community.

We believe that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. As such,we invite you to become an active partner in supporting the school curriculum.It is only through a community-wide commitment to excellence that our schoolscan provide the very best educational programs for the children of GrandIsland.

We hope this handbook will provide you with useful information regarding ourschool. For more comprehensive information regarding school procedures andpolicies, please refer to the School Calendar, District Policy Manual and Code ofConduct posted on the district website. We invite you to call us at any time ifyou have questions or comments. The main office can be reached at 773-8840.

Remember, the best way to support your child’s education is to spend timereading with, talking to and listening to him/her every day.

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATIONYour membership and active participation in PTA is invited and welcomed. Yourinvolvement in Kaegebein Elementary is an investment in your child’s future.

The Kaegebein PTA takes a very active role in school functions. These functionsinclude a number of enrichment programs throughout the year such asconcerts, theater performances, curriculum presentations, and others. The PTAalso sponsors the Book Fair, Fall Fundraiser, school pictures, yearbook, thedistribution of PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) books, and a host of otheractivities.

PTA meetings, activities and officer information are detailed in the districtcalendar, which is mailed at the beginning of each school year. Please feelfree to call a PTA officer or committee chairperson if you are interested in aparticular activity. The PTA looks forward to seeing you at their many events!

II. SCHOOL OPERATION

SCHOOL HOURS

● The school day for students is 8:50 am – 3:05 pm● Students are marked tardy after 9:00 am● Students who participate in the Breakfast Program may enter the

building at 8:45 am● Office Hours are 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Supervision of students not attending the breakfast program begins at 8:50 am.Students arriving before 8:50 am will be asked to wait outside the building for thebell.

ATTENDANCE & TARDINESSOur curriculum is designed for students to be in school all day, every day.Students who arrive after 9:00 am are marked tardy. A written excuse is requiredfor any absence, tardiness or early dismissal. Legal excuses include illness,inclement weather and religious observations. An absence for which no excuseis provided will be considered illegal.

It is important to call the school office at 773-8840 to report your child’s absence.If you do not call, the attendance clerk will call to verify the child’s absence andto inquire as to the reason. New York State Department of Education regulationsrequire that each student’s attendance be reported to the State EducationDepartment.

EARLY DISMISSALIf an early release is unavoidable, please send a note to your child’s teacher inthe morning indicating the time and person who will pick up your child. Pleasereport to the main office for pick up. Picture identification will be required.

VISITORSVisitors are always welcome! Please follow these procedures to ensure thesafety of our students and respect for their learning environment:

● Visitors must use the main entrance only and immediately report tothe main office to sign IN and OUT (please do not enter the buildingthrough any other doors, especially during arrival and dismissal)

● The office will provide visitors with a school pass to wear while onthe school premises (staff will ask visitors without a visible pass toreport to the office)

● Help us maintain quiet in the hallways

Please note that the main office call box is a buzzer. Press once to alert us toyour presence. DO NOT press to talk. If you do, we will not be able to hear youas the buzzer will continue to ring.

VOLUNTEERSWe welcome all volunteers. There is a Volunteer Form that must be completedand approved for all persons seeking to serve in our classrooms. A copy of theform is at the end of this handbook.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGSIn case of inclement weather, please listen to one of the local radio stationslisted below, or check the local TV stations for announcements regarding schoolclosings.

Should the building be closed for any reason other than inclement weather (i.e.-water main break, gas leak, etc.), An automated phone call/text, and/or emailnotification will be initiated to contact parents. Please be sure all contactinformation is current and accurate at district office. This can be done throughthe census verification report sent home at the beginning of each school year.Changes to this information can be done through the District Office at 773-8800.

JUST FOR KIDS Before and After School CareJust For Kids offers an after-school child care program at Kaegebein ElementarySchool from dismissal until 6:00 pm. The program is staffed by qualifiedcoordinators and aides. Activities include arts and crafts, sports, specialprojects, stories, games and quiet time for homework. Call 692-5580 for detailsand registration information. Before school care is also provided at Huth RoadElementary. Students are transported to Kaegebein for the school day.

TYPES OF CLASSROOMS AND PLACEMENTThere are many types of classrooms at Kaegebein Elementary. Some classroomswill have more than one adult in the room throughout the day. This means thatthe reading teacher, math teacher, speech/language pathologist, ESL, specialeducation, teaching assistant or teacher aide may “push-in”. For this reason, wedo not provide an “opt-out” for classrooms that may have the assistance ofother educational professionals.

The process of organizing classrooms each year is a complex one. Educationalresearch and professional knowledge of how children best learn must beconsidered when placing children in classrooms.

Our primary goal is to create a balanced classroom considering student abilities,learning styles, gender, and special needs. Current grade level teachers,special area teachers, and the principal are responsible for organizingclassrooms. The principal will conduct a final review of class placements.

Please be assured that your child’s needs will be carefully and thoughtfullyconsidered in the placement process. Parents or guardians who feel the needto provide additional information that has not previously been provided abouttheir child are welcome to do so in the form of a letter to the principal. The typeof information that is most helpful might include testing completed by an outsideagency or information about your child’s learning style that his/her teacher maynot already know. It is not our practice to fulfill requests for specific teachers.

III. LUNCHES AND CAFETERIA

SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAMKaegebein Elementary provides a nutritional breakfast of juice, milk, cereal anda bread product for $1.50 every morning beginning at 8:45 am. If your familyqualifies for free/reduced lunch, the cost or breakfast is free. Please contact theFood Services Department for more information.

LUNCHESA full “Type A” lunch is served daily on an “offer” basis. This means that a childmay decline any two items but must take milk as one of the three items chosen.Children buying and those bringing lunch from home may also purchase itemsas listed below:

Menus are posted in each classroom, posted on the district website and aresent home with your child on the first day of each month.

CAFETERIA MONEYThe easiest method of making cafeteria purchases is by using a decliningbalance. To set up a declining balance for your child, please send in a checkof any amount made payable to “School Lunch Fund” anytime of the year orvisit myschoolbucks.com. Students are identified on the computer. There is nolunch card. Balances are monitored by the cafeteria staff and will “roll over”from week to week, month to month, and year to year.

Should you choose to not use a declining balance, your help is necessary inestablishing a family routine regarding bringing lunches or lunch money toschool. Emergency lunch loans are available in the office for the cost of lunchonly (not for ice cream, cookies, etc.) Lunch loans must be repaid on thefollowing day. Loans cannot be made available to students who do notreimburse the office in a timely manner. There is a limit of two lunch loans perstudent.

FREE & REDUCED MEALSFree and reduced lunches are available. Free and reduced lunch forms are tobe completed by all families regardless of income and returned to the school inSeptember. The information is necessary for funding calculations by the state.All information will be kept strictly confidential. Students who were eligible forfree or reduced lunch at the end of the previous school year will maintaineligibility for the first two weeks of school until a new application can beprocessed.

FOOD ALLERGIESFood allergies can be life-threatening. For the safety of all of our students,Grand Island Central Elementary Schools are designated as “Allergy Sensitive”.Please follow these important procedures:

● Food brought onto the school premises to share with other studentsmust be store bought.

● The Main Office, Health Office, Computer Lab, Auditorium, andLibrary are all designated ‘Food-free’ areas, and no food should betaken into these areas.

● All students will wash hands before and after eating.● Certain classrooms will have specific allergy procedures depending

on the needs of the children in the room. The nurse willcommunicate specific procedures for your child’s classroom, if any.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONSStudents’ names will be read over announcements to celebrate birthdays. Dueto the large number of known and unknown food allergies, we encouragestudents to bring in non-edible items to celebrate their special day. Stickers,bubbles, pencils, erasers, sharing a favorite book or game are all acceptablemeans to make the day special. If edible treats are brought in to share with theclass, it must be store bought with posted ingredients that would allow studentswith food allergies to participate in the celebration as well. Prior arrangementsmust be made with the teacher before sending in treats.

CAFETERIA PROCEDURESTo help maintain a happy, healthy, and orderly cafeteria environment, studentsand staff are to observe the following procedures:

● The Viking Values will be followed at all times.● Students will wash hands before/after lunch and/or use the sanitary

stations in the lunchroom.● Students are assigned tables and are to stay seated.● Students will check for any dropped items, and throw out their trash when

asked to do so by the lunch room monitor.● Students are encouraged to use the bathroom before or after lunch. If a

student must go during lunch, s/he must ask a monitor.● Students must wash hands after eating and before lining up to remove

any possible allergens from hands.● Please note that glass containers are not permitted.

IV. TRANSPORTATIONPlease use the e-Link from Versatrans to obtain your child's busing information.Here is the direct link to the online bus schedules: CLICK HERE. Parents/guardians will need to know their User ID (which is their 5-digit StudentID) and the password is the student's 8-digit DOB (ex.  01042017).If you need to use the District website, please go to the Transportation Dept. From there you can access the e-Link on the left side column.  You will need toknow your User ID (which is your 5-digit Student ID) and the password is yourchild's 8-digit DOB (ex.  01042017). 

Please call transportation at 716-773-8892 with questions or comments.BUS SAFETYThe safe transportation of our students is of primary concern to us. The samecourtesies are expected on the school bus as in the classroom. We ask that youreview the following expectations with your child:

● Students should be at their assigned stops at least 5 minutes prior tothe arrival of the bus—buses will not wait for latecomers

● Students may not go to another bus stop for pick up● Students are expected to wait in an orderly manner and be

considerate of other students’ property, as well as their own● Students who cross before boarding or after leaving a bus must:

● Wait for a signal from the bus driver before starting to crossthe street

● Walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus● Never cross behind the bus

● Students must remain seated at all times● Students may not place any part of their body or any objects

outside the windows of the bus● Students should be quiet, orderly and listen to the instructions of the

driver● No food or beverages may be consumed on the bus● Students are not allowed to transport prescription medicine or

over-the-counter medications on the bus● Bulky packages or projects, large musical instruments, animals, or

potentially dangerous objects may not be brought to school on thebus

● Glass containers are prohibited on buses and in school

Fighting, bothering others, use of profanity, and not cooperating with the driverare all infractions which are reported to the building principal. Repeatedinfractions may result in the loss of bus riding privileges. If a child is suspendedfrom riding the bus, it is the parent’s responsibility to transport the child to school.

The jurisdiction of the school is limited to behavior aboard the bus. We cannotcontrol children’s behavior before they board the bus or after they leave it. Ifthere are problems at a particular bus stop, we may be able to assist in resolvingthe problem; however, the primary responsibility rests with the parents.

Student supplies should be carried in backpacks. For safety reasons, students’hands should be free when boarding the bus. Strings on hoods, jackets andassorted paraphernalia attached to backpacks pose a safety hazard andshould be removed.

You may request, in writing, for your child to take a different bus home. Thestudent must give the written request to the classroom teacher. A bus pass willbe issued to the child and must be shown to the driver upon boarding the bus.Students are not permitted to take a different bus without a note from home.

Requests for alternate transportation, such as for daycare, must be made at theJack Burns Transportation Center located on Baseline Road behind SidwaySchool.

Late buses are provided for students in grades 3 – 5 attending after-schoolactivities or staying for extra help. The late bus leaves at 4:00 pm Monday-Thursday only. Please be patient with the drop off time for late bus runs. Somedays more students will be taking the late bus than other days, and the drop offtimes may vary greatly.

DROP OFF PROCEDURESCars must use the front parking lot during regular arrival times and dismissal times(8:50 AM and 3:05 PM). Please use the “DROP OFF STATION” signs during arrivaland ask your children to exit using the door closest to the sidewalk. Please donot pass stopped cars that are in front of you. This is a serious safety concern.

Pick Up for Dismissal. If you are picking your child up after school or an afterschool activity, please send in a note or use the attached “Year Long DismissalForm”. We cannot release any student to another adult without written

permission from the parents or guardians. You must walk into the school to signyour child out.

BICYCLESIf you would like your child to ride his/her bicycle to school, please stop by theoffice to discuss your request and pick up a permission slip. The permission slip isalso posted on our website. A signed permission slip must be completed andsubmitted to the school office before children may ride their bikes to school.Please note the following safety rules:

● Students must walk their bikes when on school property.● A bicycle rack is provided at the end of the parking lot. Bicycles must be

securely locked. We cannot be held responsible for missing or stolenbikes.

● Scooters, skateboards and roller blades are not allowed.● Bicycle helmets are required at all times while riding bikes.● All safe bicycle riding rules must be obeyed.● Failure to comply with safety regulations will result in the forfeiture of bike

privileges.

V. HEALTH SERVICES

Our school nurse is a licensed R.N. who is assigned to our building on a full-timebasis. You may contact the nurse by calling the school office at 773-8840.

Please do not send your child to school with an illness. Not only will s/he not beable to function properly, but other children may become infected. If yourpediatrician diagnoses a communicable disease, please notify the nurse assoon as possible.

On occasion, it may be necessary for children who are in attendance in schoolto be excused from physical education classes. Excuses from physicaleducation are approved through our school nurse. Excuses for more than twoconsecutive physical education classes require a medical note from yourmedical provider.

REQUESTS FOR HOMEWORK FOR SICK STUDENTSIf you expect your child to be out ill for several days, you may request thathomework be available for pickup in the office or sent home with a sibling or

friend. Please be aware that preparation of these materials takes time, soadequate notice is greatly appreciated. It is expected that all homeworkrequested by a parent will be completed by the student and brought back withthe child upon returning to school.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS● Health examinations for school attendance are now required in grades PreK

or K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, & 11. The new regulations also require that the exams arereported on a state required form. Schools are not required to do healthscreenings if they are documented on the health examination form.

● Vision screenings for both distance and near vision (along with the otherprevious vision screening tests for new entrants) are now required at entryand in grades PreK or K, 1, 3, 5, 7, & 11. Hearing screenings are required in thesame grade levels

● Scoliosis screenings are required in grades 5 and 7 for girls, and grade 9 forboys.

● Detailed information on each health screening and health examinations areoutlined in guidelines available on the NYSED School Health ServicesWebpage

● One dose of meningococcal vaccination is required in grades 7, 8, and 9 thisschool year; and two doses are required for students in grade 12. 

● Please see the 2021-2022 NYS Immunization Requirements for SchoolAttendance for more details on this vaccine along with other immunizationrequirements.

PROCEDURES FOR DISPENSING MEDICATIONSBoth prescription and over-the-counter medication must be brought to theschool by the parent in its original, labeled container. Additionally:

● Written permission must be submitted by the parent to the health officerequesting that the school district comply with the healthcareprovider's orders.

● Written orders from a healthcare provider and instructions by thepharmacist must accompany the medication including name of drug,dosage, time interval, possible side effect, etc.

● During field trips or other school activities, classroom teachers will beadvised by the nurse regarding procedures.

VI. STUDENTS

STANDARDS OF BEHAVIORMaintaining reasonable school discipline is a responsibility of both teachers andparents. We expect our students to always behave in a courteous manner. Weinsist on certain rules of common courtesy, safety, and acceptable socialbehavior, not only in the classroom, but also in the cafeteria, on the bus, walkingin the halls, at the playground, and in all special area classes.

Students are responsible for their own behavior and, as such, must realize that allbehavior is met with consequences. Appropriate behavior is regardedpositively. Inappropriate behavior will result in disciplinary measures. The “VikingValues” are the general rules that were adopted by our Shared Decision Makingand our PBIS or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Committees. TheViking Values were chosen because they address a broad array of behaviorsand expectations. They will be explicitly taught in each of the areas identifiedby the PBIS Committee. The Viking Values are:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and orderly way.Students who violate the school rules or the District’s Code of Conduct will bedisciplined by school staff, the principal or the principal’s designee.Consequences depend on the level of severity and may include verbal orwritten apologies, restitution, calls to parents, loss of privileges, after schooldetention, in or out of school suspension, or a combination of consequences.

Students who are “caught” exemplifying the Viking Values in the cafeteria andon the bus may receive Viking Value Tickets. Tickets can be collected andredeemed at the “Viking Values Redemption Center” during lunch period oncea month.

DRESS CODEPlease use the following guidelines when helping children choose clothing forschool:

● Children may not wear clothing which endangers their physicalhealth or safety, limits participation in activities or is unduly disruptiveto classroom or school activities.

● Shorts, skorts, and skirt length should reach at least to the tips of thestudent’s fingers when arms are held straight down.

● Tops can be sleeveless; however, “spaghetti” or “skinny” straps ortank tops are not appropriate.

● Shoes must be of sturdy design—flip flops and sandals are notappropriate and may not be worn on the playground.

● Sneakers are needed for all physical education activities.● Clothing should be appropriate for the weather.● Suggestive language or designs are not appropriate.● Fourth and fifth grade students will need a change of clothing

including shorts, a t-shirt and a towel for physical educationclasses—deodorant should be used as necessary.

● In the fall and spring, students should be prepared with a jacketand sweatpants for outdoor physical education.

● Except for religious or medical observances, hats are not worninside the school building.

Teachers will inform the children if special attire is required for a field trip orpicnic. Students attending special field trips such as to the Buffalo Philharmonic,Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Studio Arena Theater, etc. are asked to dress up forthe occasion.

WEARING JEWELRY DURING PHYSICAL EDUCATIONFor the safety of all of our children, students are not permitted to wear jewelry ofany kind during physical education classes. Families are encouraged to keep alljewelry at home on physical education days. The school is not responsible forlost or stolen jewelry.

SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTSSchool supply lists are available through the PTA. Every effort is made to keepthe costs of school supplies to a reasonable level. We ask for parents’cooperation in sending the items in with their child in a timely manner. If afinancial hardship exists, please contact the school office and arrangements willbe made for your child to receive the necessary supplies.

TEXTBOOKS, LIBRARY BOOKS & AGENDASTextbooks and workbooks are provided for students. Students are responsible forreturning library books on time. If a book is lost or damaged, a fine orreplacement fee will be assessed. Final Progress Reports may not be issued tostudents with outstanding library fines or fees.

Agendas are used school wide as a means of teaching children organizationalskills. Agenda fees will be collected during the first few weeks of school.

LOCKERS & PERSONAL ITEMSEach student is assigned a locker for outside clothing, lunches and backpacks.Locks are not permitted. Valuable items should not be brought to school.

CELL PHONESWe understand that parents may want their child(ren) to have a cell phone as asafety measure. Please be assured that your child is protected by an adult fromthe moment s/he steps on the school bus or enters the view of the crossingguard (if s/he is a walker) until the student disembarks the bus, or leaves thecrossing guards’ view. This means that they have no reason to use their cellphone during the school day.

If a parent still wishes for his/her child to have a cell phone in school, the phonemust be in the “off” position and kept securely during school hours from 8:50 amuntil 3:05 pm. Cell phone use by students on school grounds outside of schoolhours (including bus transportation and co-curricular activities) will be at thediscretion of the school personnel in charge. Cell phone use by students onschool grounds before or after school is strictly prohibited unless explicitpermission is granted by the school personnel in charge. Cell phones in usewithout explicit permission from school personnel will be confiscated and kept inthe office until a parent or guardian can come to retrieve it. LOST AND FOUNDA lost and found box is located in the hallway just outside of the office. Jewelryand watches are kept in the office. Children are encouraged to checkregularly for missing items. Items left unclaimed are periodically donated tocharity.

VII. PARENT TEACHER COMMUNICATION

We believe that parents and teachers are partners in teaching children, andcommunication is vital to a successful partnership. Please keep in closecontact with your child’s teacher throughout the year. Conferences, email,enews are just a few of the ways to keep in touch.

PARENT CONFERENCESParent conferences are scheduled on the calendar three times per year. Forthese conferences, teachers will contact parents by note or phone to request aconference.

Parents may also request a conference at any time by calling the school office.The office secretary will contact the teacher to set up a mutually agreeabletime. Teachers may also request a conference at any time during the schoolyear.

When calling the school to speak with a teacher, please be prepared to leavea message so that the teacher may return your call when not needed in theclassroom. Teachers will make every effort to return your call within 24 hours.

Report CardsReport Cards are posted three times during the school year on your ParentPortal account. Progress Reports are intended to be a report of the child’sprogress and development in both academic and personal growth areas. Werecognize that there are some limitations in this type of reporting andencourage parents to conference with their child’s teacher to gain a morecomprehensive understanding of their child’s academic and socialdevelopment.

IX. SPECIAL AREAS

In addition to the core curriculum of English Language Arts, math, science andsocial studies, we also have physical education, art, music, library/research,orchestra, band, chorus, co-curricular activities, resource room, counselingservices, speech/language, AIS, OT, PT, and ELL. All students participate inphysical education, art, music, and library/research. If you would like moreinformation about any of our other special services, please contact your child’steacher.

ART, MUSIC & PHYS. ED.Music and art classes are provided weekly to all students. Students should bringa smock with them to art class. Physical Education is provided twice weekly.Students may not wear jewelry of any kind to phys. ed. Sneakers must be worn.

All students must be prepared for phys. ed. class outside during the fall andspring. A jacket and sweatpants may be needed according to the weather.Fourth and fifth grade students will need a change of clothing including shorts, at-shirt and a towel for physical education classes. Deodorant should be used asnecessary.

Response to Intervention (RtI)Response to Intervention or RtI is a federally mandated small group instructionalprogram designed for students who demonstrate a need for extra instructionalsupport based on multiple assessment measures. If your child is recommendedfor RtI services, you will be notified. S/he will receive “pull-out” instruction by ourreading and math teachers in addition to the instruction taught in the classroomfor a period of time until the reading and math teachers dismiss the child fromthe program, at which time you will be notified again.

CSECSE or the Committee on Special Education works with families of students withspecial education needs. Oftentimes, students with special education needshave a document called an IEP or Individualized Education Plan that outlinesthe accommodations and/or modifications needed to help the child succeedin school.

Speech/Language/OT/PT/ELLKaegebein Elementary offers services in speech/language, OT or OccupationalTherapy, PT or Physical Therapy and ELL or English Language Learning for thosestudents who qualify.

X. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Kaegebein Elementary offers an assortment of co-curricular programs forstudents in grades 3 – 5. Late buses, which leave at 4:00 pm, are provided forthe transportation of students who stay for after-school activities. Parentpermission slips are required for all activities. The following activities are offered:

INSTRUMENTAL MUSICOpportunities for instrumental music lessons are provided to students beginningin Grade 4. Strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments are available.Interested students are screened for candidacy in the spring of third grade.Students are selected on the basis of their aptitude for their requested

instrument, overall academic standing, and personal responsibility. Studentpreferences are accommodated when possible, however, aptitude and theformation of a balanced performance group, such as band and stringensemble, are considered as well.

Instrumental lessons are held weekly for thirty minutes. Students are responsiblefor weekly preparations as well as performance preparations.

Most instruments must be rented by the parents. Please check with your child’smusic teacher to determine whether the instrument is available through theschool.

BAND (Grade Levels: 4-5)Performance in the large instrumental ensemble is begun after 4-8 months ofschool lesson instruction on wind, brass and percussion instruments. Bandrehearsals are held after school twice a week September through May andfocus on performances three times during the year. Students must be enrolled inmusic lessons at Kaegebein Elementary and demonstrate skill levels necessaryfor invitation to participate in the band.

ORCHESTRA (Grade Levels: 4-5)Orchestra is offered to students studying a string instrument when they reach anecessary skill level identified by the instructor. Students must be enrolled instring lessons to participate. Practice outside of school is necessary andattendance at all concerts is required. The orchestra is a combined group ofstudents from Huth Road and Kaegebein. Rehearsals may be scheduled ateither building October through May. A special bus transports students torehearsals.CHOIR AND CHORUS (Grades 3-4-5)Like our band and orchestra, choir and chorus are very popular extracurricularactivities. All students interested in music and singing are encouraged to jointhe choir and/or chorus. Like band and orchestra, concerts are scheduled inthe evenings two or three times per year and various concerts are held duringthe school day. Most rehearsals for choir and chorus take place before schoolSeptember through May. It is the responsibility of all students to attend therehearsals unless they have an excused absence. Students are expected tolearn the music and basic choreography for performances. Attendance at theevening concerts is mandatory.

ART CLUB (Grade Level: 4 and 5)Art Club is offered October through May for students interested in the visual arts.Individual works of art as well as group projects are created. Students may bepresented with media or techniques that they have not had an opportunity toexplore previously. Most work will be displayed in school and throughout thecommunity. Students are expected to come to the art room ready to becreative and try new things.

SAFETY PATROL (Grade Level: 5)Near the end of their 4th grade year, students apply for the position of safetypatrol officers and are assigned a duty station in or outside of the school atarrival and dismissal during their 5th grade year. Safety Patrol officers helpprovide a safe entry and departure of all students by maintaining order andreinforcing the rules of safety in our school.

HOMEWORK CLUB (Grade Level 4 & 5)Students participate voluntarily or by teacher recommendation. Participantsreceive organizational and tutorial help once a week after school. Students areresponsible for having their materials ready for each session.

EARLY ACT (Grade Level: 4 & 5)Students volunteer to participate. The club meets approximately once a weekfrom October through June depending on the level of participation required byeach project. Projects are chosen for their benefit to our school, the GrandIsland community and the WNY area. Students should be prepared to develop

In signing this form, I grant permission for my child to ride his/her bicycle to and fromschool. I have reviewed safety rules with my child and have instructed him/her in properrules of the road. My child understands that in riding on the street, bicycles must rideWITH traffic and are subject to the same rules as drivers of automobiles. This includesobeying all traffic signs and signaling intentions through the use of hand signals.

I understand that helmets are to be worn when riding to and from school, and will notallow my child to ride his/her bicycle during inclement weather. Students must also walktheir bikes on the school sidewalks. I am also providing a lock to assist in safe guardingthe bicycle while it is stored on school property.

I further understand that Kaegebein Elementary School and the Grand Island CentralSchool District will not be held liable for any injury or mishap which may occur in thecourse of riding to or from school and that responsibility for my child rests with me, theparent, as I am granting permission for my child to ride his/her bicycle to and fromschool.
