ENERGY STROAGE COMMON APPLICATIONS

Unterrupitble Power Supply (UPS)

Emergency power when mains power fails.

Usually short duration discharge- to power up stand-by power source, properly shutting protected equipment.

Main uses data centers, heavy industrial applications such as electrical equipment or refrigeration, critical health facilities and emergency response/management.

Page 9: PACE Luncheon Seminar / August 25 th,2015 By Dan L. Vogler / CEO of TexasMicroGRIDS.

ENERGY STORAGE COMMON APPLICATIONS

Demand Charge & Peak Shaving

Goal is to offset peaks in highly variable loads, thus avoiding higher demand charges from the utility.

The demand charge is based on the highest capacity required during a given billing period for a 15-minute interval.

Demand charge can be up to 40 percent of the electric bill and is often the easiest to control and economize with a battery system.

Load Shedding

System runs on a clock to help utility/grid balance load.

Charges at night off-peak and discharges during peak daytime hours.

Takes advantage of demand pricing to create significant savings.

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

Why Lithium is the Better ChoiceLithium is lightest of all metals + greatest electrochemical potential = most energy density per weight (most efficient).

This efficiency leads to longer battery life (over 2x nickel cadmium and 4x lead acid).

Proven chemistry common in phones & laptops

Safer than Lead. No Out gassing / No Leaking

Low Maintenance (no scheduled cycling, no priming when new)

Safe disposal by recycling at end of life

PREMIUM BATTERY MODULE AND ARRAY

Battery Management System

Electronics and software set designed to ensure the safe and reliable operation of large battery array

FEATURES OF BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMIncludes Advanced “ENERGY-Watch” programmable Battery Charge Pump that allows for the widest range of charge-discharge rates that maximize utilization without compromising battery life or investment by exceeding DOD

Includes redundant systems and built-in ground fault impedance measurement. Dual independent processors located in different modules monitor each other and the battery cells for unsafe and faulty operation and disconnect the contactors, isolating the battery stack when an unsafe condition is detected.

Includes protection from electromagnetic interference to ensure highly accurate voltage readings and reliable communications.

System can be dually powered by the battery stack as well as via an external power source to remain operational when cells are fully discharged. This allows the BMS to maintain communications with external systems and manage the cell recharge process even from zero voltage.

Modular scalable architecture enables the UtiliCell BMS to be configured to support batteries ranging from small to large energy storage system.

Communicates with external maintenance and monitoring systems via Ethernet or Modbus.

Firmware updates can be performed via Ethernet
