Looking ahead, the most recent National

Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Manufacturers’ Outlook Survey found that respondents continue to predict modest growth in sales and production over the next 12 months, even as their assessments about their own company’s outlook have clearly diminished since December.

The housing market was also softer-than-desired earlier this year, but it has begun to show signs of stabilizing. New housing starts were lower than expected in May, even as they continue to reflect progress from three months ago. More importantly, housing permits rose to 1,275,000 units at the annual rate, the fastest rate since August 2007.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.4 percent in May, its fastest monthly pace since February 2013. Meanwhile, food prices remained unchanged in May for the second straight month, with increased costs for food purchased away from home being offset by lower costs for items purchased for the home. - excerpted from National Association of Manufacturers Monday Economic Report (6/22/15)

Hardwood suppliers on the West Coast accounted for mixed business conditions. One California contact says that the hardwood market is a little on the soft side, probably by about 5 percent.

A source in Washington commented that they are bidding like crazy and everybody is anticipating a good second half of the year. The source anticipates the remainder of the year as stronger than the first half based on the

    bids being received.

    An Oregon contact stated that

market conditions are still flat in this area of the country. There are different factors to

Active Fire Season Forecast: This week Agr iculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell joined Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell in announcing projected wildfire fire activity for 2015 season. The three focused on the increased wildfire threat to the West as the continued drought affects forested areas. "Climate change, drought, fuel buildup, insects and disease are increasing the severity of catastrophic wildfire in America's forests," said Secretary Vilsack. The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for 2015 can be found here.

This year’s fire suppression cost has a 90% chance to cost between $810 million and $1.62 billion from the Forest Service budget alone. If the higher estimate is realized, this would exceed the agency’s current budget authority, which is set at $1 billion. Fire suppression costs have grown from 16% of the Forest Service’s total budget in 1995 to 52% in 2015. - excerpted from FFRC Weekly Report (12 June 2015): n. pag. Print.

Wood is a powerful tool and versatile mater ial,

and sometimes it feels like the range of its uses is practically limitless. In May, a new study came out showing that computer chips are now being made of wood. Computer chips!

What makes CLT so compelling is that it can be manufactured using “junk” trees with diameters as small as 4 inches, including many dead trees.

CLT could fundamentally change the way forests are managed by creating demand for small-diameter trees. Support from environmentalists might also result in compromises that would stop court challenges that are now stalling harvesting in federal forests. Confidence that a steady supply of small-diameter wood would be available could encourage mill owners to consider investing in CLT manufacturing. - excerpted from Bach, Ashley. • Gevo, Inc. announced a breakthrough to its fermentation technology that will allow it to produce isobutanol from cellulosic feedstocks such as wood waste which can then be converted into Gevo's alcohol-to-jet fuel.

Gevo currently makes isobutanol from corn at its plant in Luverne, Minn., but its process has always had the flexibility to adapt to other feedstocks. The process announced today uses forest residuals – the wood scraps that are left over from logging operations – providing a value creating recycling opportunity for waste wood that is traditionally left in the forest, potentially becoming a forest fire hazard. The company has previously

announced the testing and use of its alcohol-to-jet fuel derived from its corn-based isobutanol in conjunction with major airline partners and the U.S. military. - excerpted from "Gevo's (GEVO) Wood Waste-Derived Jet Fuel to Be Used in First Ever Test Flight."Streetinsider.com. 4 June 2015. Web. 24 June 2015.

Alaska Airlines says it will fly a demonstration flight next year using 1,000 gallons of a biofuel made from wood waste in Northwest forests.

The jet biofuel is being developed by the Washington State University-led Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance using tree branches left after a timber harvests. The five-year project is being supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Using the wood waste to make jet fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while providing job opportunities in rural timber communities, members of the alliance said. - excerpted from "Alaska Airlines Will Test Jet Fuel Made from Wood Waste - The Spokesman-Review."Spokesman.com. • China’s economy continues to decelerate. The HSBC China Manufacturing PMI (up from 48.9 to 49.2) has now contracted in five of the past six months, but the rate of decline eased a bit in May. With that said, output (down from 50.0 to 49.3) contracted for the first time since December, and export growth (down from 50.3 to 46.7) also returned into negative territory after rebounding a little in April.

Manufacturing growth in the emerging markets contracted once more. The HSBC Emerging Markets Index decreased from 51.3 to 50.7, its lowest level in 12 months. More importantly, the manufacturing component of this index remained in contraction territory despite rising from 49.6 to 49.7.

The U.S. trade deficit narrowed in April after peaking in March. The trade deficit declined from $50.57 billion in March to $40.88 billion in April. March’s deficit had been the highest in more than three years, and it was likely influenced by the West Coast ports slowdown, which combined with a stronger U.S. dollar and weaknesses in markets abroad impeded manufacturing. - excerpted from National Association of Manufacturers Global Manufacturing Economic Update (6/11/15)

GreenWood Resources, a Portland-based WHA Member, will dramatically expand its sustainable tree-growing operations under a new capital deal announced this month.

GreenWood will invest and manage the assets of Global Timber Resources LLC, a new timber company established by TIAA-CREF Asset Management, its parent.

The deal brings $667 million in new capital to

GreenWood and more than triples its total assets under management, to about $950 million.

Jeff Nuss, president and CEO, said the new capital builds on its growing global investment strategy and reflects on the growth in relationships it has developed with institutional investors since TIAA-CREF acquired a majority stake in GreenWood in 2012.

The firm has invested in forestland and tree plantations in Asia, Europe and Latin America, fueled in part by rising demand for paper and wood products from countries with fast-growing middle classes such as China.

That has led to substantial growth in the administrative operations housed in Portland. Nuss said the company has 35 employees in its headquarters, with more being hired in international field operations as it invests in new sites. - excerpted from Culverwell, Wendy. "Portland's GreenWood Resources Nears $1B in Timber Assets - Portland Business Journal." Portland Business Journal, 5 June 2015. Web. 10 June 2015.

Employment & housing data—Wayne Allen Root, political commentator and 2008 Libertarian Party vice-presidential nominee, notes that the April 2015 jobs headlines proclaimed that 223,000 net new jobs were created, but they never mentioned that the March jobs figure was revised downward by 30%, from 126,000 new jobs to 85,000! “If the [April] numbers were adjusted down by 30% only 156,100 jobs would have been created. The other fact not stated, was that 252,000 full-time jobs were lost, replaced by 440,000

  • part-time jobs. The 252,000 full-time jobs lost was the largest in a year” (Fox News). In fact, the May jobs report re-revised March job gains up to 119,000, and revised April gains down to 221,000.

Perhaps the strongest evidence that the jobs market is not as strong as the government suggests is that housing markets are nowhere near as strong as they would be if unemployment was truly 5.5%—though, again, you’d never guess there was any lingering weakness in housing based on the headline growth numbers that have been trumpeted recently.

Hardwood reality - Again, the proof is in the pudding. If employment gains were as strong as the headlines suggest, the housing recovery would be steady and strong. If the housing recovery was as steady and strong as the headlines suggest, hardwood demand would be booming. Yes, domestic sales of cabinets, moulding and maybe even flooring are a bit stronger than during the first half of last year—but nothing on the order of where the indicators say they should be. - excerpted from Barrett, George/Meyer, Dan. • Lawmakers this month advanced a measure aimed at offering local jurisdictions more control over managing wildfires on federal lands. The Resilient Federal Forests Act passed a packed House Natural Resources Committee with bipartisan support.

The measure would allow the federal government to defer to local working groups some management of areas of national forests that would be designated high-risk for wildfires. The Department of Agriculture appoints members to state-based Resource Advisory Councils, including representation from industry, environmental and local governments. The measure would reduce the minimum number of required members to six. - excerpted from Baksh, Mariam. "The Cortez Journal." 06/15/2015. Cortez Journal, 15 June 2015. Web. 24 June 2015

Policy updates from the Hardwood Federation Federal Forest Reform Legislation: The House

Natural Resources Committee reported out federal forest reform legislation (H.R. 2647) earlier this month that we believe has potential for not only delivering needed reforms, but for actually passing the Congress. The bill significantly expands acreage caps for the Forest Service to use categorical exclusions (CE) to address conditions in the national forests that need active forest management. Other components of the bill include provisions that limit frivolous lawsuits. The one critical piece that this legislation does not address is the fire borrowing issue that has crippled the Forest Service budget over the last several years.

  • Appropriations: Both the House and Senate are moving forward with their Interior Appropriations

bills. The Interior spending bill covers budgets for the Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife Service, as well as the EPA.

BioPreferred: On June 15, USDA published two final rules implementing the BioPreferred voluntary labeling and federal procurement preference program that was authorized by the Farm Bill.

Biomass: A couple of different letters are circulating on Capitol Hill currently on the issue of carbon benefits of biomass energy. One, co-led by Representatives Kuster (D-NH and Westerman (R-AR), originated at the request of the Biomass Power Association and is focused exclusively on biomass to electric generation. It was cosigned by 19 other Members of Congress and sent to EPA on June 16. The second letter, led by Senators Collins (R-ME) and Merkley (D-OR), is the result of considerable input from forestry and forest products trade associations. It is a broader messaging document that is energy pathway neutral (encompasses thermal energy we use in our mills) and focused on the carbon and economic benefits of forest-based biomass.

The pace of CHANGE is changing!

By Ryan Walter Experts tell us that today's world is throttling up at

unprecedented rates of change as the human race heads towards 2016. In the world of hockey we talk in terms of 'changing-the-pace' and "pushing the pace" and also knowing that our opponent will "push back"… each of these conditions involves accelerating our team’s commitment and energy. Sounds like the world we live in, right leaders?

The United States utilized 3 million farmers to feed 100 million people in1930. In 1990, 300,000 farmers fed 300 million people and exported half again as much food (can you imagine today?) Movement off the farm was traumatic, but it happened at a reasonable pace. Your Grandfather was a farmer, your Dad a lawyer and you became a computer IT expert. Experts tell us that today's worker will have 7 careers (not jobs) in their lifetime.

  • (cont. from pg 12) How about this change? In 1985 Vinyl Records were a 27 billion dollar industry; by 1991

they had completely disappeared. The next year CD sales topped anything that the Record industry had ever

produced. Today, music has moved to digital and the pace-of-change is so fast that vinyl records are making a

retro return! (Who could have seen that one coming?) The question is not can we keep pace, rather how do

leaders "push the pace?" This term is firmly embedded in the hockey/sports culture and encourages teams to accelerate their pace. The US political scene has introduced a new term over recent years: "Leading from Behind.” Most people believe that this is not leading because it’s reactive. Instead of knowing and moving towards what you want, Leading from Behind waits to see what others might do. This could well be the differentiator between "managing and leading."

“Leaders have to focus on helping their people believe that this (change) is real and that you really mean it. Get it wrong and they can be your biggest critics. All of this will depend on your personal commitment and mean you have to model the right behaviors. Staff will look to their leaders for behavioral cues – lead it!” David Thodey Former CEO & Executive Director, Telstra

Leaders that "push the pace" will at times get it wrong and make mistakes. … but waiting to see what our opponent is going to do (or how change might affect us) puts us in the Leading from Behind mindset immediately.

Teams that play safe (backing up "to trap") very seldom play for the Cup. Great coaches encourage high pace and then adjust their team's game-strategy on the move, but only inside the context of "pushing back" or "pace acceleration." Winning teams have leaders that continually define what their best game looks like, and consistently energize their team to get that game on-the-ice... with lots of PACE!

We were talking about leadership & change with a friend recently who told us that today in the country of India there are over 600 million people under 30 years old. With a large percentage of this group moving firmly into the middle class, this is a game changer. How will this affect North American business and work force? Leaders will either "push the pace" and maximize this opportunity or react with a scarcity mindset, afraid of what this might do to their business…
