The Prez Box

Zena and I just returned from the J-West conference titled “A World of Jewish Music”. The Zwicks and Sheila Bass also attended from the Pacific Community. Attendees learnedabout the different music/songs of Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrakhi Jews, and AmericanJews. Performances by Yiddish theater singer Deborah Davis and humorist Daniel Cainerwere special treats.

It was a wonderful weekend full of music and fun. The five of us from Pacific Community enjoyed qualityworkshops and lots of singing. It was so nice to see some old friends, and meet new ones.We can look forward to more singing when we celebrate Purim and Passover in the coming months.

Jews To Knowby Lee Jacobi

Stanley Levison(1929-1979), Civil rights activist, advisor to MLK

Stanley David Levison was born in New York City in 1912, to a Jewish family. Levison attended the University of Michigan, Columbia University, and the New School for Social Research. He received two law degrees from St. John's University.

As a young man, Levison was a Communist, and worked for a variety of liberal causes. While serving astreasurer of the American Jewish Congress, he aided in the defense of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and wasactive in the campaign against the McCarran Internal Security Act.

Levison became a close advisor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was described as Dr. King’s fundraiser, strategist, ghost writer, and confidant. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), a key force in theCivil Rights Movement, was launched 1957; it was the brainchild of Dr. King, Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, and… Stanley Levison. Levison played a significant fundraising and strategic advisory role in the SCLC.

Although Levison stopped activity in the Communist Party in 1957, the FBI used Levison’s Communist historyto justify wiretaps and bugs on his offices and the offices and hotel rooms of Dr. King. FBI Director J. EdgarHoover associated the Civil Rights Movement with communism, and he suspected that Levison would use orpublic manipulate Dr. King to foment political unrest in the US. Levison indeed did persuade Dr. King topublicly oppose the Vietnam War. Hoover did not like that stance, but the majority of the American publictoday might approve it retrospectively.

Levison died in 1979 of illnesses at the age of 67. He lived long enough to see passage of civil rights laws andthe US withdrawal from Vietnam.
