Summary of Progress
You may have observed since the presentation in February:
• Continuation of bulk earthwork operations across the project
• Mobilisation and commissioning of paving plant near Ross Lane
interchange
• Establishment of the concrete batch plant
• Installation of steel girders at Minor and Emigrant Creeks
• Installation of concrete girders at Skinners Creek
• Reinforced earth backfill at Martins Lane and Bangalow Road
• Installation of stormwater and subsoil drainage
• Completion of the bridge deck pours at Byron Creek
• Concrete hand pours at the Myocum Road roundabout
- 4 - 29 April 2014
Summary of Progress
We have also:
•Completed both tunnel breakthroughs.
•Conducted a landscaping trial at Fill 31 (at Ewingsdale, north
of the tunnel portal).
•Made preparations for the tunnel lining.
- 5 - 29 April 2014
Roadworks
Progression of earthworks activities:
• Large excavators, dozers and scrapers will be used less
and less.
• We’ll move into sub-pavement activities; and
• Then conclude with detail earthworks activities.
How will this look?
- 6 - 29 April 2014
Roadworks
Bulk Earthworks – mass movement of earthen material in cut-fill operations
- 7 - 29 April 2014
Roadworks
Sub-pavement – detail placement and trimming operations of
layers that support the roadway.
North and Southbound carriageways immediately to the south of Ivy Lane on 5 April 2014
- 8 - 29 April 2014
Roadworks
Detail earthworks and finishing – boxing-out, backing-up,
median and verge and topsoil spreading activities.
Backing-up kerb on Access Road A and topsoil spreading plus open drain lining on the Northbound carriageway on 5 April 2014
- 9 - 29 April 2014
Roadworks
Expectations over the next three months:
• Larger excavators, dozers, dumpers and scrapers will
be demobilised, but smaller equipment will remain.
• Rock hammering, processing and crushing will diminish.
• Sub-pavement and detail activities will increase.
Generally, this transition will be more noticeable from the
southern end of the project moving towards the north.
- 10 - 29 April 2014
Roadworks
Crushing
We are anticipating that all crushing operations should finish by August. Crushers are currently located at and should be completed by:
•Cut 20, about 2kms south of Bangalow Road - mid-June.
•Cut 28 near the Southern Portal - late June.
•Cut 30 just north of the Northern Portal - late May, but then mobilising to Cut 31, ½ km north until early July.
- 11 - 29 April 2014
Bridges
Progression of structural activities:
• Sub-structure works - abutments, pilecaps and piers are almost
done.
• Activities associated with the super-structure are now key; and
• Then we’ll conclude with bridge furniture and the off-structure
works.
How does this look?
- 12 - 29 April 2014
Sub-structure works – those elements which support the
bridge such as the pilecaps, piers, headstocks and abutments.
Northern end of Bangalow Road and Tinderbox Creek bridges both looking southwards on 5 April 2014
Bridges
- 13 - 29 April 2014
Super-structure works – the installation of girders and decks
that form the bridge.
Precast concrete beams placed on Skinners Creek and steel-trough girders at Minor Creek both on 5 April 2014
Bridges
- 14 - 29 April 2014
Decking and off-structure works including furniture - the
items that permit the bridge to be safely and functionally
utilised.
Precast concrete parapets; end posts; abutment backfill at Broken Head Road bridge.
Completed northbound deck at Byron Creek bridge both on 5 April 2014
Bridges
- 15 - 29 April 2014
Bridges
Expectations for the next three months:
• Installation of girders at:
• Skinners Creek, occurring now.
• Watsons Lane, as soon as weather permits.
• Tinderbox Creek, throughout May.
• Bangalow Road, out of hours works in early June.
As soon as Byron Creek northbound is open for construction
vehicles (hopefully in the next week) this will reduce
construction traffic on Tinderbox Road.
- 16 - 29 April 2014
Paving
Expectations for the next three months:
• Start of sub-base paving in the southern zone during May.
• Continuation of hand pours at Ewingsdale roundabout.
• First hand pours at Bangalow interchange in July.
• Some mainline paving north of the tunnel to facilitate traffic
staging.
- 17 - 29 April 2014
Paving
Our paving strategy is essentially to do as long as runs as possible in each production day through each of the zones in succession, broadly:
• Southwards from Ivy Lane, turn around then all the way back to Minor Creek, turn around and complete the southern loop.
• Southwards from Bangalow Road, turn around at Emigrant Creek, then all the way back to the tunnel, turn around and complete the central loop.
• Northwards from the tunnel, turn around and then complete the northern loop.
- 18 - 29 April 2014
Traffic
Key activities that have affected the travelling public:
• Once Byron Creek northbound is open to construction traffic in
late April (hopefully this week) truck movements on Tinderbox
Road will reduce significantly.
• Truck numbers have declined from a peak of about 140 pre-Xmas
to around 90 now, we expect that number to diminish
significantly through May / June.
• Our girder deliveries will conclude with Bangalow Road
in early June.
How does this look?
- 19 - 29 April 2014
Traffic
Key activities which will effect the travelling public:
• Cement tankers and quarry trucks will continue to deliver to our
batch plant for the duration of the paving.
• Concrete agitators will supply the tunnel – peaking during the
tunnel lining from May to September – as well as the bridges.
• We anticipate being able to run paving supply along the project
alignment from August, this is contingent upon the
Emigrant Creek traffic diversion.
- 20 - 29 April 2014
Traffic
Staging and sequencing of traffic:
• 2nd stage of traffic diversion at the Ewingsdale roundabout
in late May.
• Diverting the Pacific Highway southbound traffic on to
Woodford Lane for the Byron Bay exit in early June.
• Pacific Highway traffic beneath the north most span of
Emigrant Creek bridge in late July / early August.
• 1st stage of traffic diversion at the Bangalow roundabout in July.
- 21 - 29 April 2014
• Both tunnel breakthroughs achieved: southbound on January
24 and northbound on February 24.
• Controlled tunnel blasting is complete.
• Excavation continues for several more weeks.
• Tunnel control centre concrete tank construction ongoing.
• Tunnel concrete lining works ie, waterproofing, steel fixing,
concreting have started.
• Southern portal cut and cover preparations underway.
Tunnels
- 26 - 29 April 2014
Out of Hours Work
Expectations over the next three months:
•Detail kerb removal near the Myocum Road roundabout.
•Girder installation at Bangalow Road in early June.
•Saw cutting once base paving starts from Ivy Lane in July.
•Tunnel lining continues.
- 27 - 29 April 2014
Bangalow Interchange
•Construction of the Bangalow interchange has started and will
take about ten months.
•Concrete paving will start on the southern half of the new
interchange at Bangalow Road in July.
•Out of hours concrete saw cutting will be required and directly
affected residents will be advised in advance.
•Once pavement and road furniture are complete on the
southern portion, Bangalow Road will be diverted to that side.
•The same process will then occur for the northern portion.

Towards the end of the project
the Pacific Highway will be
diverted through the Bangalow
interchange to allow:
•Demolition of the remaining
overbridge.
•Completion of the Bangalow
noise mound.
•Final adjustments on
Bangalow Road.

Bangalow Road overbridges
New Bangalow Road bridge
•Girder installation is scheduled for early June and will require
nightly closures of Bangalow Road.
•Eastbound traffic out of Bangalow will need to use the Pacific
Highway to go to Byron Bay / Suffolk Park; no issues for
Ballina bound traffic.
•Westbound traffic into Bangalow from Byron Bay / Suffolk
Park will need to use St Helena Road or Coopers Shoot Road.
Remaining Pacific Highway bridge over Bangalow Road
•Demolition of old northbound Pacific Highway at Bangalow
Road will occur towards the end of the project.
