Pacific Science Center2
Letter from the Board Chair and Interim CEO
For Pacific Science Center, it was a year to celebrate
innovation—and an ancient civilization.
POMPEII: The Exhibition was a landmark cultural event
for our region, welcoming more than 185,000 guests
to a magnificent, interactive exploration of a vibrant
city frozen in time by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.
Community and media responses to POMPEII, and
the companion gallery we created about local
volcanology and disaster planning, were exceptional.
As with RACE: Are We So Different?, we were glad
to provide a touchstone for discussion of meaningful
community issues.
Our nationally acclaimed STEM programs continued
to flourish. Last year, more than 1.1 million guests
joined us on our Seattle campus and beyond. Nearly
170,000 people were engaged with our outreach
activities that included Science On Wheels, Science Cafés,
environmental science programming at Mercer Slough
Environmental Education Center in Bellevue, and the
Washington State LASER program which serves districts
all across the state to improve science teaching and
learning. We are especially proud of the record-breaking
5,133 students who joined our science-themed camps;
the 93,865 students and chaperones who participated in
field trips; and the 86 teens who built leadership skills
and STEM literacy through Discovery Corps and the
Lake Washington Watershed Internship Program, our
award-winning career ladders. Thank you to more than
900 volunteers who contributed nearly 30,000 hours of
dedicated service in support of our mission.
3Annual Report 2015
Of course, Pacific Science Center is, at its core, all about
people. In this report, we are pleased to introduce you
to a handful of the many special people who inspire us
to spark curiosity, conversation, and collaboration in
classrooms and communities all around the Northwest
and beyond. They are representative of the more than
1.1 million people we served this year—people of all
ages and walks of life, generations of great minds
touched by the generous support of our community.
Thank you for your investment and partnership as we
bring science to life for our community.
P.S. As we go to press with this annual report, we have
just welcomed Will Daugherty as our new President and
CEO. We look forward to introducing Will to all of you
who are part the Science Center community!
This report spotlights a few of the many initiatives
we launched and grew last year—exciting additions
to our robust portfolio of innovative STEM
programming. With generous support from the
Carnevali family and RAM Mounts by NPI, our renovated
Boeing IMAX® Theater now brings science (and
adventure) to life through the most technologically
advanced giant screen theater experience in the Pacific
Northwest. A new education program, Proton Preschool,
cultivates scientific curiosity and a love of learning in
our littlest learners. More than 20,000 guests tackled
new design challenges in Tinker Tank, our popular
hands-on studio. More than 1,000 local scientists
shared current research with more than 50,000 people
through our Portal to the Public initiative. And we
welcomed thousands of new guests who rarely have
the opportunity to experience our community’s cultural
institutions by opening our doors for Exploration For
All: Autism Early Open, presented by Safeco Insurance,
and Google Field Trip Days for students from schools in
low-income communities. Meanwhile, our Science On
Wheels vans continued to crisscross the state, delivering
hands-on science education and a new computer science
curriculum to more than 147,000 people, including many
with limited access to STEM resources.

Finding a Home in Tinker Tank
When the Padfield family moved to Seattle from upstate
New York last year, they left behind almost all of their
friends and family. “Coming here and starting all over
again was hard,” says Dawn, mother of Lila, Liam and
Coral. Fortunately, they discovered the Science Center.
“This was the highlight,” she says, “a really fun safe
place to come all the time and enjoy ourselves together.”
The kids are entranced by the Tropical Butterfly House
and the hands-on puzzles in
Ackerley Family Exhibit Gallery.
Most of all, they love Tinker Tank.
On Fridays—field trip day for
their homeschooled family—Lila,
Liam and Coral bounce into Tinker
Tank to tackle the weekly project
using simple supplies such as cardboard and tape. Once,
they wowed staff and guests alike with a record-breaking
“air boat” that carried 42 paper clips for two feet. They
also immersed themselves in the “Hootitat” challenge,
using index cards and ten stickers to create personalized
habitats for three whimsical owls with special needs. Lila
and Liam built a tall tower for Big Al Owl who likes to be
high up in the air. Coral made a playground for shy Tiny
Tina Owl—complete with a slide, teepee and gate to
protect her from predators.
“The staff and volunteers encourage them to persevere
through problems,” Padfield says. “They ask open-
ended questions—‘What if we try this?’—instead of
telling them an answer.”
At home, with their dad, an engineer, the Padfield kids
keep tinkering and refining. And as they explore their
new city, they point to shapes in Seattle architecture
that mimic what they’ve created with Tinker Tank
index cards, chatting about which would be structurally
strongest, come an earthquake.
Tinker Tank is helping them make connections,
Padfield says. “They’re looking at the world with
more curiosity.”
Last year in Tinker Tank, our popular hands-on
design lab, 20,000 guests experimented with wind
tables, gravity walls, cardboard amusement parks,
Keva blocks, electric circuits and more. The staffed,
hands-on activities are designed to cultivate
creative problem-solving skills through the practice
of the design-test-redesign engineering process.
Portal to Current Research
Pacific Science Center6
Last year, our Science Communication
Fellowship Program and workshops
trained 115 scientists to share their
work with the community. They
joined hundreds of scientists in
our volunteer corps, presenting
at Research Weekends (attended
last year by 36,120 guests), Meet A
Scientist events (attended by 11,595
guests), Science Cafés (attended by
1,545 guests), and Teen Science Cafés
(attended by 230 youth).

Connecting Scientists with the Community
“More poop is better,” jokes Dr. Elizabeth Broussard
as she laughs while stirring a sludgy, brown concoction
in a beaker, preparing fake poop for a demonstration
about microbes.
Broussard, a physician and researcher from University
of Washington’s Division of Gastroenterology at
Harborview, is one of many local scientists featured in our
current science exhibits. These exhibits and our innovative
programs connect the community with local scientists’
current research through interactive displays, in-person
events and collaborations with youth; an award-winning
training component helps STEM researchers learn to
articulate complex scientific ideas to the general public.
Broussard’s research, on fecal microbiota transplants for
patients with Clostridium difficile infection, was recently
featured in Meet Your Microbes!, an exhibition in one
of two galleries we reserve for rotating explorations of
cool, cutting-edge science in our region.
C. difficile bacteria, which can cause severe diarrhea,
flourish after prolonged antibiotic use kills off beneficial
intestinal bacteria that normally keep it in check.
“Imagine having to go to the bathroom 20 times a
day for two years, and you’re dehydrated and in the
hospital,” Broussard says. Then, you get a fecal transplant
(which has an astonishing 92 percent cure rate) and the
next day, you only have one bowel movement. “It is
incredibly gratifying as a physician to do something that
is so effective.”
She jumped at the chance to share her work because she
wants the public to learn what’s approved as safe and
effective, what’s in trials, what’s ahead. “This is just the
beginning,” Broussard says. “The role of science is to
drill down and figure out what is it about the stool that
makes health happen. We want to get people thinking:
How is this working? Can we use it for other diseases?”
And, as a mother of nine-year-old twin girls who have
loved visiting the Science Center since they were infants,
Broussard says, “This is a place where it’s fun and
freewheeling and at the same time they’re getting a
dose of science that sticks with them long term.”
In addition to our regional efforts, Pacific Science
Center leads the growing, nationwide Portal to
the Public Network, which consists of 44 museums,
universities, zoos, and other organizations that
have adopted our tested strategy for scientist-and-
public engagement.

IMAX® Movies: Inspiring Generations
As children, Ben Wong and his siblings were over the
moon whenever their dad took them to Pacific Science
Center’s IMAX Theater. “No easy feat to wrangle five
energetic kids,” Wong says, “But we were enchanted,
watching enormous lumbering insects, things soaring,
things erupting.”
“My family was poor, but my parents always wanted to
make sure we received the best education they could
give,” Wong says, so they invested in a Pacific Science
Center Membership. Wong’s father, Victor, “knew
learning could be enjoyable and entertainment could be
educational; after all, he learned to speak English from
the John Wayne movies he watched in Manila.”
Wong’s father immigrated to the U.S. in 1963, the
year after the World’s Fair, enrolling at the University
of Washington where he met and married a beautiful
philosophy major. Then came five children. Many
weekends, they took the bus from their White Center
home to the Science Center. “Once there, we’d break
free from our parents and run from exhibit to exhibit,”
Wong says. “It was like going to Disneyland.” Favorite
memories: The IMAX movie To Fly! paired with a
Gossamer Albatross (human-powered airplane) exhibit
and demos on folding paper airplanes.
Now 43, with advanced degrees in computer science,
Wong is still a proud card-carrying Member of the
Science Center. Soon after we opened the doors of
our newly renovated Boeing IMAX® Theater, one of
the most technologically advanced movie theaters
in the world with comfy race-car red seats and the
biggest screen in Washington state, Wong invited his
72-year-old father to enjoy a movie together. It was a
wonderful opportunity, Wong says, “to remind him
of the good childhood he gave me.”
We were the first science center and third theater
in the world to showcase IMAX’s next-generation
projection system. The system was designed for the
world’s largest screens including ours—the largest
in the state of Washington. This groundbreaking
laser technology increases brightness and contrast,
producing astonishingly vivid colors. Twelve discrete
channels plus sub-bass in the new sound system
complete the immersive experience. Our two IMAX
theaters ignite curiosity about the world, and the
revenues support science education.

Proton Preschool: Inspiring Our Littlest Learners
At age three, Rick Bresnahan loves many things: pouring
liquids to the tippy top of test tubes, experimenting
with squishy dough circuits that glow, and singing
with Proton Preschool classmates about Herman the
Worm. Most of all, he loves his big sister Dorothy, who
graduated from Proton Preschool last year.
When Dorothy enrolled in Proton Preschool, she was
already a veteran of several other schools. Her dad,
Jake Bresnahan, says, “For me, trained as a scientist,
I looked at Proton Preschool and saw a big difference
in how they teach. They do a lot of work on how to
approach a problem. Instead of rote memorization,
the kids are learning: ‘How do you get to the answer
on your own?’ They want to try and figure it out
themselves first. It’s a trait I like to see.”
Launched under the arches in downtown Seattle
in January 2015, Proton Preschool joins our award-
winning Polliwog Preschool (at Mercer Slough
Environmental Education Center in Bellevue)
in inspiring early learners with the wonders of
science at a critical age that leverages children’s
natural curiosity.
Dorothy had a blast with classroom experiments,
Live Science Stage shows, and questioning scientists
on the exhibit floor. After a science interpreter in our
Live Insect Village showed her a hissing cockroach up
close, Dorothy talked about it for weeks. In the car after
school, she’d tell Rick: “We made Gak (slime) today.”
At home, they’d pull out ingredients and
start experimenting.
So when it came time for Rick to start preschool,
the family chose Proton Preschool again, despite a
hefty commute from Kenmore. “When my son comes
home from school and says to me—‘Dad, Dad, did
you know phytoplankton make oxygen; we breathe
oxygen’—it shows how much he is being taught,”
Bresnahan says. “Teacher Kate and Teacher Megan
bring the curriculum to life.”

On the Road, Sharing Science
When our brightly colored Science On Wheels vans roll
up—whether along the rugged coast, amidst farmland,
at city community centers or suburban schools—they
immediately get noticed, says Education Outreach
Lead Teacher Sam Chamberlain. “It’s always exciting to
witness the wow factor.”
For 23 years, Chamberlain has been delivering hands-on
science education to tens of thousands of youth in all
of Washington’s 39 counties, plus Oregon and Idaho.
He is part of a team of 12 educators who crisscross the
Northwest in six vans: Blood and Guts, Engineering,
Mathblast, Physics On Wheels, Rock and Roll (geology)
and Space Odyssey.
“Parent volunteers meet us at the crack of dawn to
unload,” Chamberlain says. Then, the Science On
Wheels team wows crowds with a portable planetarium,
energy balls, robot arms, gyroscopes, crystals, a
dollhouse that undergoes an earthquake. Come lunch,
Chamberlain gets his meal in the cafeteria, surrounded
by kids bubbling with curiosity and enthusiasm.
“It’s rock star status,” Chamberlain says. “The school
staff, the custodians, everyone becomes your friend.”
Sometimes communities share their own lessons, as in
La Push, on the edge of the Pacific, where families from
the Quileute Tribal School invited Chamberlain to a drum
circle and to help check salmon drift nets while bald eagles
swooped overhead. A professional magician, Chamberlain
often performs entertaining tricks at day’s end.
Yet the real magic is when science ignites a sparkle in
students’ eyes, he says, especially the “challenging”
kid whose desk the teacher has shoved against the
whiteboard. “You can see they’re laughing, having fun,
engaged…‘I want to be a scientist!’”
“I delight in having the kids feel successful and showing
them they can do science, they are doing science and that
they’ll go through life asking questions like scientists.”
Since 1973, Science On Wheels has been reaching out
to rural, small and underserved communities that
have limited access to STEM education. Last year, we
delivered hands-on science education programming
to more than 147,000 people at 598 venues across
Washington state and beyond, including many
communities traditionally underrepresented in
science. About half of our in-school programs were
at locations where more than 40 percent of students
qualify for subsidized lunches.

Everybody’s a Scientist on Google Field Trip Days
Ronni Hale was thrilled when she “swam” with
whales while experiencing Humpback Whales 3D
on a cetacean-sized screen in our newly renovated
Boeing IMAX® Theater. Lajaya Jones had a blast in our
Gemini Capsule Model, simulating astronauts’ early
space flights. Myelle Bolar analyzed her favorite foods’
nutritional content in Wellbody Academy’s Cafedium
and decided to opt for salads more often.
Ronni, Lajaya and Myelle are among the 3,000 students
and chaperones we hosted last year at Pacific Science
Center with support from Google for school field
trips from underserved communities. Filling our halls
with energy, the students experiment with hands-on
exhibits, explore personal health in Wellbody Academy,
take in IMAX movies and laser shows, experience
metamorphosis in the Tropical Butterfly House,
enjoy Live Science Stage Shows, and design and test
hypotheses in our Tinker Tank.
“What you eat, the chemistry in cooking, nail polish,
henna, clothing, Pluto…everything is science and
invention,” Myelle says, reflecting on her visit to
Pacific Science Center. “Everybody’s a scientist!”
“A lot of Seattleites don’t frequent these places often
enough,” says Amber Kemp, registrar at Aki Kurose
Middle School, where 76 percent of students qualify for
subsidized lunch. Kemp accompanied 10 girls, including
Ronni, Layaja and Myelle, on the Google Field Trip
Day—a first Science Center visit for several of them.
“They had a lot of fun and it was significant because a
lot of the time, there’s not a lot of focus on women in
science and math,” Kemp says. “Let’s get them interested
in these kinds of careers and bust the door open!”
Last year, this empowering program enabled 3,000
students who might not otherwise have visited
the Science Center to join us for a day of discovery.
Thanks to increased support from Google for seven
more field trips, we’ll welcome an additional 10,500
Google Field Trippers this year, furthering our goal
of expanding access to even more underserved kids
and schools. The next field trips will target schools
where more than 80 percent of students receive free
and reduced-price lunch, and will include several
schools outside of the Seattle area.

In Memory of John M. Davis
Passionate about science ever since fabricating his own crystal radio set as
a student, Mr. John Davis, Pacific Science Center Director Emeritus and
a founder of the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine, was instrumental in
establishing the Science Center as an independent nonprofit entity recognized
by the Federal government. He served five terms on our Board of Directors
over 18 years and wrote an incredible 30-year history of the Science Center.
Until his wife Ruth’s passing in 2009, John and Ruth could be seen at the
Science Center often as they had great affection for our organization.
The feeling was certainly mutual as they charmed everyone who knew
them. John continued to be a wonderful champion of the Science Center,
upholding the legacy that he and Ruth created here. He is greatly missed.
