2

The context

Utility bespoke design and build delivery model needs to evolve for the growth of renewable gas connections – approximately 250 biomethane injection plants will be required by 2020 to meet UK renewable energy targets.

Current approach:

Design and build cost is circa £650k for the injection plant (excluding connecting pipe and remote monitoring).

Lead time circa 12 months design and build (excluding remote monitoring point and remote monitoring).

3

The requirement

Need a pre-approved packaged design for biogas connections with suppliers on a call off contract to provide the built units to site

Key components:

1. Develop a fit for purpose cost-effective engineering specification for a packaged solution.

2. Develop a tender to source suppliers who can provide pre- approved packaged designs to meet the specification, which they can supply to site ready built.

3. Allow the concept to be future-proofed as ownership may not be with the GDN and regulatory requirements will change.

The outcomes

Packaged designs which can operate over the following operating conditions:

Pressure

Max inlet of 7 bar and Min outlet of 75mb

Flow

20m3/h - 2000m3/h

Size

Equal in scale to a shipping container

10

The outcomes

Substantial cost saving

Lead times of 5-6 months (for supply to site)

Four suppliers are involved in the tender who can now be approached by DFOs/other GDNs should they wish to purchase a packaged unit.

Technica Ltd

Elster-Instromet

Orbital Gas Systems

Biogast/Future Energy Group Ltd

The work puts in place a platform for the industry to build from into the future.
