President Report

What an amazing year Canoeing Western Australia has had!

In fact I started off last year's report with the same sentence and the reason for this is so much has been achieved in a year - so much for us all to be very proud of.

Our Administration staff have been a bit up and down, which has made it a little hard for our Executive Officer Sarah Aulin, but she has managed any staff issues with aplomb.

Major Achievements

Paddle AcademyHas had the most successful year since inception with income, a big thanks must go out to the fantastic instructors and our sponsors Mainpeak, Finn Kayaks and Canoeing Down Under who without their support this program would not be the success that it is.

Avon ChallengeFormerly known as the Avon Junior, the office worked tirelessly to make this a very successful event this year as the criteria changed dramatically; the event this year included not only our junior paddlers, but stand up paddle board, outriggers plus dragon boats, in total almost 250 participants.

Long Brother Medals were presented to all junior competitors, and prizes were supplied by in2Kayaks who supported this event above and beyond our expectations.

This event was able to be run so successfully because of an army of volunteers organised by the Race Director Peter Martin.

Discipline and Club Committee MeetingsIt has been one of our priorities this year to have ongoing contact and information with our clubs, disciplines and members, the office has organised two discipline and committee meetings, plus our web-site is kept up to date with all relevant news and information, as well as sending out weekly newsletters.

Northam Avon DescentCWA's relationship with NADA has grown this year, for the second year we together with NADA ran the initiative to get paddlers that were doing the Avon but not Club members to enter the race at a lower entry fee if they chose to join a Club, this was well supported.

Our Board Member Darryl Long is also on the Board of the NADA and with this liaison I believe our relationship will grow even stronger in the years to come.

Events

CWA ran four events this year, these being Bay 2 Beach, Paddle Challenge, Avon Challenge and for the first year we took over from the clubs the Northam to Toodyay race (which had to be shortened to Katrine to Toodyay because of low water), these events were all very well supported by members and non-members alike, we have plans to make these races bigger and better in the coming year.

Once again a big thanks to our sponsors and volunteers for making these events successful.

Programs

This year CWA ran several programs for different areas of the community, these being:

"Ladies that Paddle", this was a fabulous initiative to get more women into paddling, we ran one six week basic course which was very well received and supported (we had to turn ladies away), that we could have re-run plus run courses for the intermediate lady paddlers, unfortunately money and time were the obstacles to run more of these this year.

Indigenous Paddling, this program was run out at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, by CWA with the support of ICEA, PCYC and DSR, plus local schools.

Paracanoe a Come and Try was conducted at the end of 2011, with the result being that CWA organised, promoted and conducted weekly sessions at Ascot Kayak Club for para-canoeists, great support was given to us by Australian Paralympics Committee.

NEDP - Talent Squad CWA has worked closely with the WAIS coaches, AC High Performance Coaches and Surf Life Saving WA to find and test young athletes that are new to our sport that have the build, strength and agility that would be the best fit for kayaking, to be potentially our next Olympians.

Our Year in General

SponsorsCWA is very fortunate to have such loyal sponsors, many of our sponsors have been there for us for many years, so please remember whenever possible please support them in any way that you can, special thanks are to Canoeing Down Under, Finn Kayaks, Mainpeak, in2Kayaks, DSR, Healthway, NADA and City of Bayswater.

Whitewater ParkCWA is still working closely with DSR to make this a reality.

Olympic GamesThe office staff worked tirelessly in promoting our sport during and for many months leading up to the Olympics, they organised coverage through all the media outlets in WA, there were many events organised by them for the different city councils to promote either new club rooms or extensions to existing clubs, the need for the whitewater park and it gave many parliamentary dignitaries as well as local city council members an opportunity to meet our Olympic athletes.

Our Olympic AthletesAs a sport we were rightly proud of our representation of paddling athletes in this Olympic Games, from sprint we had Alana Nicholls, Steve Bird and our own Jesse Phillips (who as most would know was and still works as a casual employee for Canoeing WA) and from slalom we had Kynan Maley and Robin Jeffery's, these athletes together with the CWA office staff worked so hard in promoting our sport here in WA, we are so lucky to have these five amazing athletes who are such great role models and ambassadors for our sport.

Education

9

Page 10: Paddle WA - Key Personnel for Discipline: · Web viewRamon Andersson – himself an Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games – was awarded the Australian Canoeing Coach of

CWA have conducted ten (10) educational courses and workshops throughout the year for our members, these have been well supported.

In closing I would like to give heartfelt thanks to Sarah Aulin and her staff, as you can see from the above with the limited staff that we have in the office, much has been achieved in just one year.

Also thanks to my fantastic Board Members, Vanessa Simpson, Shayne Hamilton, Neville Hines, Steve Reynolds, Grant Pepper and Darryl Long.

Another big thanks to our sponsors, but lastly but by no means least to our incredible volunteers, either as club members or disciplines - you are what set us above all other states.

Executive Officer Report

The Canoeing WA team were very busy this year, increasing education opportunities, size of events, Paracanoe introduction and a new marketing tool Paddle Guide 2012, just to name a few. The Administration team comprised of Stacey Anderson, Administration and Development Officer; Zac Acott, Development Officer; Hayley Knowles, Development Officer; Jesse Phillips, Development Officer and I, Executive Officer. Considering we only have two full time employees including myself and the equivalent of one part-time employee hours worked by casuals, the team has done an incredible job. Our Head instructor Jerry Alderson has played an integral role in developing programs and implementing the Associations main program Paddle Academy, which is run all year round. In addition to our fabulous pool of Paddle Academy Instructors out on the water we had lots of helping hands both club volunteers and work experience students, to assist us with our year’s operational goals.

MEMBERS

Based on the statistical information from the 2010/2011 report the junior membership has decreased by only 1.2% (currently 586 junior members). The Canoeing WA (CWA) season is not in line with the financial year, the season concludes at the end of September each year, commencing October. At the time of last year’s report the total number of members stood at 1441 members. However at the conclusion of the season it reached 1661 total members. The 2011/2012 season has not concluded but at present there are 1379 members, comparing to the report done at the same time last year there is a 4% decrease. Canoeing WA has been given information to believe that some of our clubs have been shadowing members. It is believed that clubs are purchasing their own insurance and therefore bypassing the State Association. This effectively means we cannot accurately portray the full number of participants within affiliated CWA Clubs.

This season we introduced online memberships to allow clubs to be a part of the process. CWA offered group and one on one session’s to teach the new system. This has streamlined the process allowing Club Membership Officers to upload new members; event license/come and try, with no delay, ensuring participants are covered by AC insurance immediately.

The Administration team have made a real presence at club meetings and events. It has been great to hear and see firsthand what is working and what needs support or developing in our sport.

Canoeing WA has been working with Denmark Paddling Club to become incorporated. The club officially joined the association in August 2012 as an affiliated club. This is really exciting as we did not have an affiliated club in the South West and it is also an opportunity to run a regional event.

While working with Stand Up Paddlers WA during the Avon Challenge, CWA created a solid relationship and now looks to affiliate Stand Up Paddlers WA under the CWA banner. Working with other disciplines increases the opportunities and choice of activities for our members, both competitively and recreationally.

PADDLE ACADEMY (PA)

11

Page 12: Paddle WA - Key Personnel for Discipline: · Web viewRamon Andersson – himself an Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games – was awarded the Australian Canoeing Coach of

Paddle Academy has been running well throughout the year and still remains the prominent program at Canoeing WA. The introduction of the first Paddling Guide has helped to market this program and provided current clients a visual guide to take home.

The Paddle Academy program has had a lot of equipment upgrades thanks to Mainpeak, Finn Kayaks and Canoeing Down Under.

Paddle Academy instructors include:

Jerry Alderson John Di Nucci Rusty Creighton Taitiarna Brown Jonty Fidge Julie Howlett

Sam Pilton Declan Stack Simon Cannon Guy Power Darryl Long Peter Martin

To ensure this program continues to grow we have a succession plan in place. Throughout this past year we ran three Level 1 Flatwater Instructors Courses. We offer accredited Instructors the opportunity to work for Paddle Academy and or get hours of experience. We also promote Instructors positions to our members who either study or work Part-Time.

EVENTS

Bay 2 Beach

247 paddlers entered the 2011 Bay 2 Beach. The race started from Mosman Bay finishing at Cottesloe Beach, one of few races to go through Fremantle's famous harbour.Sponsors for the event include Mainpeak Paddlesports, Ocean Paddling Be Safe, Australian Surf Life Saving, Healthway and Department of Sport and Recreation.

Paddle Challenge

The 2012 Paddle Challenge event had the highest ever number of competitors with 271 people entering. The major sponsors for the event were Canoeing Down Under with great support from City of Bayswater increasing their donation to $4000. New elements added to the event include a special “Welcome and Acknowledgement to Country” performed by Sean Nannup.

Avon Challenge

Formally known as the Avon Junior, this year the event incorporated three new disciplines Dragon Boats, Outriggers and Stand Up Paddlers. Participant numbers increased form an average of 85 people to 265 competitors. The new additions added a great atmosphere and drew a lot of community attention to paddling. The events major sponsor was ‘in2Kayaks’ who donated well above and beyond their sponsorship commitment, making the event an even greater success. The event was also linked to the Northam Avon Descent Association (NADA), we worked closely with the Chairman and Event Manager to increase publicity and to decrease risks associated with the event operations on and off the water. This event will continue to increase both in participation and publicity.

INCLUSION

Equipment

Canoeing WA continues to provide clubs with craft and equipment to store in their club house. This is to allow the clubs opportunities to lend boats to potential or current members. Providing this service allows the community the opportunity to come and try without the stress of hiring or purchasing equipment.

Ladies that Paddle

This program was designed to introduce more women into paddling as there are significantly more men taking up the sport. It was an introductory six week program designed to teach women the basics of paddling. The program had 42 participants, with a large wait list for another introduction course or seeking a more advanced program. Canoeing WA members and instructors helped implement the program;

Terry Brooke (T2) Sam Pilton Leonie Cockman Gisela Cannon Julie Howlett

Rosalie Evans Rusty Creighton Declan Stack Jenni Bateman Judy Darbyshire

The program was a great success; each participant was educated on the Clubs in their local area, additional skills courses that Clubs offer, and given the new Paddling Guide 2012 Western Australia.

Indigenous Paddling

Canoeing WA ran an indigenous paddling program designed to get the local Armadale Community involved in paddling at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre. The program was supported and implemented by a team of organisations, Champion Lakes Boating Club; ICEA (Indigenous community education and awareness); PCYC (Police citizens youth centre); Champion Centre; Local Schools and DSR (Department of Sport and Recreation). The program consisted of six sessions across term 1 and 2 of the school year. There were 17 participants, varying numbers for each session. The participants and their families had a great time at each session learning new skills. At the end of the program there was at least one family who joined Champion Lakes Boating Club. The member utilised the DSR- KidSport initiative; enabling WA children to participate in community sport and recreation, no matter their financial circumstance.

Paracanoe

To kick start Paracanoe in WA we conducted a joint Come and Try and Talent ID session with Rowing Australia and Australian Paralympic Committee at the end of 2011. Andrea Wood came over to WA and assisted with the technical formalities. We had a huge number of volunteer members who assisted both on and off the water.

13

Page 14: Paddle WA - Key Personnel for Discipline: · Web viewRamon Andersson – himself an Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games – was awarded the Australian Canoeing Coach of

After running this session Canoeing WA organised the promotion and coordination of a weekly session at Ascot Kayak Club. This started with another Come and Try and then it was a pay as you go initiative. Canoeing WA was only assisting with the setup with the aim to step back and allow the Coach and Instructors to run autonomously through the Club.

Unfortunately the lead instructor was unable to continue with the program due to personal health reasons. CWA tried find a replacement but was unable to find someone qualified who could consistently attend. This led to CWA looking for funding to pay for our volunteers to complete an Instructor Course (if not already accredited) or Coaching Course (if already accredited Instructor). After explaining this and the importance of having a succession plan for Coaches/Instructors, The Australian Paralympic Committee gave CWA financial support for three members to complete the relevant course as well as funds to purchase an adaptive ergo seat.

We have had a lot of interest in Paracanoe and have linked people to Club coaches to have either one on one sessions or if confident Club training.

Canoeing WA were also successful in raising funds from Grill’d (Healthy burger store). The money is to assist with purchasing equipment.

The CWA office worked tirelessly to get these initiatives up and running, thank you to the efforts of Jak Wulff and Zac Acott.

NEDP- Talent squad

Canoeing WA has been working closely with WAIS Coaches, Australian Canoeing High Performance Coaches and Surf Life Saving WA. A testing day was held at WAIS for 13 to 21 years of age, it involved measuring, strength test, and a beep test in September 2011.

The aim of the program was to discover people new to the sport that have the build, strength and agility that has been highlighted as best fit for kayaking, to potentially be the next Australian representatives.

Athletes discovered through NEDP who were unsuccessful are encouraged to join a club and directed to the best fit squad. At this stage there are two athletes that have been identified as potential Australian representatives.

Canoeing WA has built a solid relationship with Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSC), which includes collaborating on events such as Bay 2 Beach, utilising their skills for other event safety and working together on the Ocean Paddling Be safe program. CWA needs to continue to foster the relationship as SLS is where a lot of our Olympic, elite athletes derive from. CWA are looking into running basic paddling skill sessions for SLSWA that have interested nippers.

HIGH PERFORMANCE

We have restructured the Sprint pathway making clear paths for novice to elite athletes. Job descriptions were established for the WA NEDP squad coach and the tier below, Canoeing WA Development squad coach. After advertising the positions the confirmed

14

Page 15: Paddle WA - Key Personnel for Discipline: · Web viewRamon Andersson – himself an Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games – was awarded the Australian Canoeing Coach of

coaches are Guy Power, WA NEDP squad and Andrew Hayden, Canoeing WA Development squad.

Both coaches really stepped up while Ramon Andersson and Michael Pond have been away for the Olympic Games.

Ramon and Michael did a fantastic job supporting and coaching our sprint athletes in London. Both coaches have contributed to the development of the sport from grassroots to elite in Western Australia and interstate. It was great to see them both at the Olympic Games this year with our Sprint athletes.

We acknowledge and thank Rob and Julie Jenkinson for their time as NEDP coaches. Their passion and dedication made a great contribution to the High Performance athletes. We wish you all the best with your new squad.

The development of Slalom in this state has been inhibited as there is no White Water Park and limited white water. None the less we are working towards a Slalom pathway and have introduced four young slalom athletes into the WAIS Developing Champions Program. Slalom has also administered their own TID program and athletes have continued to receive the support and coaching from Zlatan Ibrahimbegovic. In 2012 to 2013 more focus will be given for the discipline to develop a clear pathway of options for new and current slalom paddlers.

Marion Ewing received $2000 from DSR’s Sport 4 All – Community Volunteer Program. Marion utilised the grant to maintain her international Canoe Slalom judging qualifications by travelling to Wausau, USA. Judging, even at an International level is completely voluntary and so all costs must be borne by the individual. Marion was extremely grateful to DSR for the acknowledgement and assistance. Marion is an amazing volunteer who shares her knowledge with Slalom WA. This allows our sport to pass the knowledge on, retaining one of our key assets.

SPONSORS AND FUNDING

We have utilised a number of sponsors for individual programs and events they include: Canoeing Down Under, in2Kayaks, Mainpeak Paddlesports, Finn Kayak, Darryl and Neil Long, Northam Avon Descent Association, Department of Sport and Recreation, and Healthway. The sponsorship process has been streamlined and defined for both parties. Agreements are now set as written documents so everyone concerned has a clear understanding of what is expected of them and what they can expect from the association. This has reduced misunderstandings and grey areas that resulted from hand shake deals.

MARKETING AND PROMOTION

Canoeing WA has made a huge effort to increase marketing and exposure in the 2011/12 season. Australia’s first ‘Paddling Guide’ was created to serve as a marketing tool for clubs and also to help promote our events and programs such as Paddle Academy. There is new signage on the Paddle Academy trailers, clearly promoting our major sponsors and who we are. All events and programs have had professionally designed and printed posters.

15

Page 16: Paddle WA - Key Personnel for Discipline: · Web viewRamon Andersson – himself an Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games – was awarded the Australian Canoeing Coach of

The process has begun to change the organisations name and logo; this is to brand the Association with a name people can relate the sport to and modern logo. At this 2012 AGM a vote will be made on three potential names and different logo designs. The aim is to have a name and logo that is inclusive of most of the disciplines.

We have been sending out a weekly newsletter and regular news stories on current events; this is an improvement on the previous sporadic updates. We have established great relationships with Local and State media, Local Government- Club Development Officers and Local Governments. The result has been a vast increase of coverage for our sport. CWA and athletes have featured in different newspapers and appeared on TV channels nine, seven and ten as well as local radio stations. CWA have personal contacts established, which will allow us to continue promoting our sport and achievements.

Olympic Games Marketing Leverage

As this was an Olympic year the marketing and awareness of the sport was a key focus. Representing WA were three Sprint athletes: Alana Nicholls (K1 200m, 500m), Jesse Phillips (K2 200m) and Steve Bird (K2 200m) as well as our two Slalom Athletes: Kynan Maley (C1, C2) and Robin Jeffery (C2). Although Kynan and Robin currently reside in NSW, as WA does not have a white water facility for training purposes, they are still considered Western Australians.

We utilised the above athlete’s success to promote the sport by organising events to give dignitaries insight to the sport and areas we need support.

Channel 10, local parliamentary members, DSR, WWP Committee, Slalom Committee, Junior Slalom paddlers and Comment News attended Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in April. This was to cover the success of Kynan and Robin making the Olympic team and to promote the need for a White Water Park in WA. Following the April event we organised Channel 9 to cover Kynan and Robin at Swan Canoe Club in May, further publicising the need for a White Water Park to develop the sport in Western Australia.

In June we organised for Director General Ron Alexander of Department of Sport and Recreation; The Honourable Terrence Waldron MLA, Minister for Sport and Recreation; Mayor Delle Donne for the City of Canning, Greg Kaeding, Chair of the Canoe Sprint Technical Committee and Olympic Committee member, to attend a breakfast and gift presentation at Canning River Canoe Club (land). It was a great success educating dignitaries about the history of the Club and how we need a Club house, also providing an opportunity for everyone to meet our Olympic Sprint athletes and coaches. Canning River Canoe Club put on an amazing spread of food and each dignitary left with a framed signed 2012 Olympic Representatives t-shirt and photos of WA’s five athletes.

In August Canoeing WA and sprint athlete Jesse Phillips presented the Mayor Terence G Kenyon, JP City of Bayswater with a framed signed 2012 Olympic Representatives t-shirt and photos of WA’s five athletes at the City of Bayswater Council meeting. Further solidifying the CWA relationship with the Local Government Authority for which the Bayswater Paddlesports Club resides.

SAFETY

The Ocean Paddling Be Safe program was created to help educate the community on ocean paddling. Also involved in this initiative were Australian Surf Life Saving and

16

Page 17: Paddle WA - Key Personnel for Discipline: · Web viewRamon Andersson – himself an Olympic medallist from the 1992 Barcelona Games – was awarded the Australian Canoeing Coach of

Department of Sport and Recreation. We have been up skilling CWA staff, two people completed a Bronze Medallion qualification and two completed a senior first aid refresher course. Through this program in conjunction with Board Member Shayne Hamilton, the standard of Canoeing WA event risk management plans has increased dramatically.

FACILITIES AND WHITE WATER PARK

We have been working towards the development of a White Water Park for some time. We are now redoing a Functional Brief with the Department of Sport and Recreation and their recommended contractor GHD. Even though it feels like a step backwards we are still moving and so we remain focused and will persevere. Both Kynan Maley and Robin Jeffery are acting as true ambassadors for the project.

Club houses are full or we need one in the instance of Canning River Canoe Club. Canoeing WA is working closely with Bayswater Paddlesports Club to create a multipurpose facility at AP Hinds Reserve incorporating all Clubs at the venue. Working with Canning River Canoe Club to support and stress the need for a Club house to the Local Government Authority, City of Canning. Both of these projects were supported through the Olympic marketing.

EQUIPMENTHire and Drive through Department of Transport Canoeing WA is in the final stages of getting the Department of Transport approval to hire the Main Peak fleet of Corsicas. The reason for this initiative is for the recreational paddlers that call the office who enquire about day or weekend hire. This is an exciting addition to the services provided by Canoeing WA.

EDUCATION Canoeing WA conducted 10 educational courses and workshops throughout the year, they are listed below:

Level 1 Flatwater Instructor Course - November 2011

Level 1 Flatwater Instructor Course - March 2012

Level 1 Flatwater Instructor Course - September 2012

Coaches and athletes Professional Development Sessions – November, December (2 sessions), January (2 sessions), February (2 sessions)

Canoeing WA conducted two Discipline and Club Committee meetings. These provided attendees with updates on what is happening at CWA, within the industry of sport, and education on a particular area, for example Working with Children Checks; Paracanoe; Risk Management plans for events, and Facility updates.

The CWA Board completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors eLearning course ‘The role of the Board’. The course provides an overview of Board Directors role and responsibilities.

Thank you to the CWA Board, CWA Administration and Paddle Academy team, sponsors, Department of Sport and Recreation, members and volunteers for all your support and

Paddle Academy Total Average Par-

ticipants

It can be seen in the graphs above the overall numbers for Paddle Academy were significantly less in 2011/2012 compared to 2010/2011 and 09/10. Reasons for this have been drawn by the increase of staff wages and the ratio of instructor to paddlers (increasing costs further). The additional expenses unfortunately had to be passed onto to our customers, which was difficult as our main market are schools and not for profit organisations. Throughout the 2010/2011 season there were two staff members responsible for running Paddle Academy, one person in the office and a second employee rallying interest at schools and organisations. The 2009/2010 and 2011/2012 years were not able to fund a sole position dedicated to Paddle Academy and therefore you can see that numbers a similar between these seasons. However in regards to finances the Association had a significant increase in profit for the program. Canoeing WA thanks all of our instructors who taught during 2011/12:

Membership

2010/11 Membership Year 2011/12 Membership Year

There are several factors contributing to the difference above. One is due to the number of Paddle Academy participants decreasing (educational paddlers), which is displayed in the previous graphs. The second is that clubs are allowing membership directly to the club and not to the Association.

Assistant Coach: Michael Pond

August 2011

Jesse Phillips and Steve Bird earned the final spots for the team for the World Canoe Sprint Championships in Szeged Hungary.
