Easter Sunday www.padreserra.org Page Three

Easter in our own lives …

What delight to turn from the sacrifices and almsgiving of Lent, from the triumphant agony oftrial and cross, to the spiritual uplift of Easter. Yet, it’s possible to turn too quickly to an emptygrave and a fuller Heaven, expecting to empty our own tombs, our own dead places, withoutconsidering the necessary prelude:

Resurrection, for Jesus, only happens …• after the truth has been spoken, even in the face of rejection• after friends he knew to be weak and capricious have been fed and nurtured anyway• after arresting enemies have been loved, their sword-torn ears healed• after foes, having done all in their power to destroy, are answered with non-violence• after a blatant, convicted criminal has been forgiven and offered hope while cross-hung• after a Father, who feels so far away, is trusted … utterly.

Can we expect some other course for ourselves?

The author of Colossians says, “In my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions ofChrist on behalf of his body, the church” (Col 1:24). It’s not that Jesus’ self-offering leavesanything ungiven or undone. What remains, only, is for us to ponder the same price and take thesame journey. Easter’s resurrection happens for us when we …

• speak the truth, both kindly and fearlessly• make the effort to reach out to, feed and accompany fickle friends• resolve, in our own hearts, that enemies are for loving• resist the harsh word, refuse to be provoked, respond with gentleness• forgive the ugliness and meanness of others• develop trust in the unseen God whose glory is revealed in everything, and everyone

created in the Divine image.

My prayer for you, this Easter is that you choose a more Christ-like life and, in this, find yourway out of any tomb into the bright radiance of resurrection in the presence of the God of everygoodness.

Siempre adelante!

Landings, for thoseconsideringreturning to theCatholic Faith.Renewed interest inCatholic Evangelizationrecently has given birth to many successful programs ofoutreach, invitation and initiation.Returning Catholics, however are often shuttled intoprograms designed to meet other needs, i.e., RCIA, RENEW,Inquiry classes, etc. Here at Padre Serra we offer Landings; a proven Paulistprogram specifically designed to welcome those who wish toinvestigate returning to the Catholic Church. The group provides a “landing” place, a safe spot to touchdown, where those looking to return will share faithjourneys, prayer, discussions of Catholic spirituality withordinary Catholics who are trying to live their faith. Many ofthem, themselves have been welcomed back home throughthe Landings process. This process was developed in the midst of the real world. Itis simple. It is gentle. And it works! May you feel God’sloving embrace and gentle guidance as you considerembarking on this new journey of faith! For more information call 482-6417 ext 341, or [email protected]

Anaheim Youth DayNinety-six pilgrims from Padre Serra were prayed over in the dark by Fr. Patrickbefore leaving in the early morning on two busses for Youth Day in Anaheim onMarch 22nd. They enjoyed a lively game of Simone Says led by Fr. LeoPatalinghug where two of our own made third and fourth place out of about 700contestants. Fr. Leo, of Food Network fame, a chef, a priest and a ninja, gave aninspiring talk about the history and power of the sign of the cross and aboutcommunion around the family table. Fr. Leo is the author of the book “GraceBefore Meals: Recipes and Inspirations for Family Meals and Family Life.”Once in the arena that was packed with 7,400 people, our group enjoyed musicby Cooper Ray and Jesse Manibusan who rocked the house. Featured speakerMike Patin with his Cajun humor and gift for story-telling gave an incrediblyinspiring talk about accepting the challenge to being called-out by Christ…don’tuse your ipod as a door stop!
