What is it that we do to ensure that there is purpose in our work, so that when our young men graduate, they fully understand what it means to be joyous, humble, courteous, peaceful and to live simply? We spoke at length about the various learning experiences at Padua, both in the classroom and outside, and how they shape these values. In the time of St Francis, the castle walls were often adorned with huge tapestries, which were basically woven pictures of daily scenes, significant historical events or significant events. They didn’t just do this for decoration. They did it more as a form of communication, but as a statement around what was important to society. They didn’t have the internet, newspapers or books, they used art and tapestries to represent what was important to their time. More so, they didn’t have schools, strategic plans or annual action plans. At our assembly this week we celebrated and acknowledged a number of things, you may even describe the collection as a tapestry of our work. This diverse list of activities highlights the broad offerings at Padua. However, being busy and doing lots, is not in itself the aim. What is important is how the things we do link to the values we want our boys to leave Padua with. On assembly, I asked the boys to consider being like the artist in the Middle Ages and having to create the tapestry to adorn the walls of La Cordelle. What would they include in their artwork to reflect the College’s values? Making sure that our work is linked to our mission means that our work has meaning and purpose. Notwithstanding this challenge, we are blessed that we have such a wonderful charism and set of values to guide us in our work. it was equally a significant night for parents and staff. It wasgreat to see the proud looks on parents’ faces as they watchedtheir sons enter the venue. I thank the staff who attendedthe evening and in particular the organising committee of MrsLisa Farry, Mrs Renae Bowman, Mrs Sue Weston and Mr BenLowrie, as well as the student organising committee.

Peace and all good,

The ChaplainThe second of our Paduan Franciscanvalues that underpin all we do at Padua isCOURTESY.

In the world-view of St Francis courtesy waslinked with what went on in a court of law orin the regal setting of a renaissance court.The implied behaviour at such a court wasnoble, aristocratic, deferential and above all,

sensitive to others. Knights in shining armour surrounded by fairdamsels at jousting tournaments! There is a story told in “TheLittle Flowers of St Francis” of Francis meeting a certainmerchant of Cortona, who washed the feet of Francis and hiscompanions, caused a great fire to be lit to warm them all,served a sumptuous meal to them and offered them all a cloakwhen they went out into the cold. Francis said of him, “I tell you Ihave rarely seen so courteous a man, and nothing would pleaseme more than to have him as a friar. He is grateful to God for hisblessing, generous to the poor, and most courteous to all.” Thisman from Cortona did indeed join the friars and lived the rest ofhis life at the friary in Cortona.

For all of us at Padua, courtesy can be exemplified in a verysimple way - calling people by their name, speaking quietly andgently to others, never putting others down, never using one’sauthority in a domineering fashion, and always trying to makeothers comfortable in our presence. St Bonaventure advisededucators in the Order, that they should treat their students asmothers do to their children, and not as masters; loved ratherthan feared. And that there can never be any harm done to astudent by showing maternal indulgence.

Courtesy then must colour all the relationships we have withothers - with students, teachers, staff and parents. For asFrancis said, God makes the sun to shine on all, the saintand the sinner. And courtesy is truly the sister of charity, for itextinguishes hatred and maintains love for all.

INITIATIVEAn initiative is to start something, with the hope that it willcontinue. A person with initiative is motivated to do new thingsand is willing to get things done on his own. Such a personhas a strong belief in himself, because he has nobody toblame, but himself, if things go wrong. Our world would be amuch poorer place if people showed no initiative. Of course,it means risk, and it may mean moving into the unknown.St. Francis risked the approval of his father, the people ofAssisi and church authorities when he cared for the lepers,preached simple sermons in the Italian language, and lived alife of humility and simplicity.

We are the beneficiaries of so many inventions that werebegun by people with initiative. People who believed thingscould be better, who were not satisfied with the status quo,and wanted to change things for the benefit of others. Theywere willing to get-up-and-go, they had the ambition, the pushand the punch to steam ahead with enthusiasm and energy;people you might say who had fire in their belly. Ours wouldbe a dull world without people of initiative.

Fr John Boyd-Boland ofm

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATIONThere will be a Liturgical Ceremony NEXT MONTH for thosePaduans who are currently preparing to receiveCONFIRMATION and FIRST COMMUNION.

These Sacraments will be celebrated at the EUCHARIST onTUESDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER at 6.30pm in the Kedron ParishChurch of the Little Flower.

There will be a short reception afterwards for the candidatesand their families.

From the Pastoral Care TeamAs parents, we often see ourselves as theprotectors of our family, those in charge ofteaching our students, readying them for lifeand ensuring we offer support and safety.Our end goal is to produce healthy,respectful young citizens with strong beliefsand values, ready to tackle the modernworld.

Yet a ‘full protection mode’ of parenting may not necessarilybe the best way of preparing our children to encounter life’schallenges. Every child needs to be challenged, taken out oftheir comfort zone and at times, made to feel uncomfortable.This notion of raising the bar of expectation may take the formof opportunities like;

• 30 minutes of extra study per night, for a month;

• giving up a personal possession for a period of time;

• sacrificing leisure time to help out around the house;

• trying new food;

• attempting a new activity.

Raising expectations for your child through new experiencesallows them to do a little more than they used to and achieve alittle more than they have previously.

At Padua, the students are provided many opportunities tostep outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves topersonally grow. Two weeks ago it was the Year 10 camp, lastweek my congratulations go to both the Cross-Country Teamand the Cross-Country supporters for their extra commitment.This week it will be the boy who chose to complete extrastudy while on Exhibition break and the year 12 gent who wasbrave enough to have the first dance with his partner at theformal. All of these are important components of a young man’sdevelopment and formation.

Do you challenge your son to step outside hiscomfort zone?

Congratulations! – Beirne House and Mitchell House sharingthe honours at this week’s Athletics Carnival.

Raising Young Men – Tip of the Week“Healthy families remind each other of their goodness.Unhealthy families remind each other of their failings.”

Mr Ben Lowrie

FormationDear Families of Padua

In this last week the church will havehonoured two important women – Our Ladyand St Clare of Assisi. The participation andleadership of women in our church goesback to its earliest times. From the timeMary said ‘yes’ to God’s request of her tobecome the Mother of Jesus at the

Annunciation, to his Birth, through his Public Ministry and finallyhis Passion, Death and Resurrection Mary was present. She isfor us, the first disciple of Jesus.

Clare of Assisi, another strong woman of faith, stood steadfastin her belief in how a religious life based on poverty should beled. From her initiation into the Franciscan Order by St Francishimself through to her leadership of a new and radically differentreligious order for women, St Clare offered herself as a newmodel for discipleship for all of us.

Our church today, is equally inspired by many women. Earlierthis month we celebrated the Feast Day of Australia’s onlySaint, Mary of the Cross MacKillop. A modern womandetermined never to leave an opportunity to help another if theneed was there. Here, Sisters have had a great impact on ourlocal church in Australia as a result.

May we be blessed by the courageous women in our midst.Women who seek neither accolade or position but through theiractions model a different kind of service and leadership.

Let us pray:Gracious God,thank you for the women of our churchand all the women in our lives.Through their service they lead us to you.We make this prayer in Jesus’ name.Amen.

Winter Sleep Out

Another successful Winter Sleep Out was held during CatholicEducation Week with thirty-two boys and Mr Chris O’Sheasleeping ‘rough’ in the Lone Pine area. An excursion to theBlind Eye Ministries Drop In Centre for Homeless People inSouth Brisbane was a real eye-opener for our group. The boysdonated their blankets (payment for participating in the SleepOut). Returning to school the boys made shelters fromcardboard that would give some protection from the cold nightahead. A big thanks to Mrs Gatt, Mrs Jorgensen and Mr ChrisO’Shea who helped out on the night and to a number of otherstaff who wished us well.

Term 3 Casual Dress Day – Friday 3 August

Teaching and Learning

Learning Nest – Students inYears 7 to 12

Is your son taking advantage of theLearning Nest? The Learning Nest is openevery afternoon in the Assisi Library from3:00pm to 5:00pm for students in Years 7to 12 and is supported by Old Boy tutorsand a staff member. This a great

opportunity for students to work collaboratively with theirfriends in a supported environment. If your son has more timeon assignments or more study time as part of his Semester 2subject goals, then The Learning Nest should be one of hisstrategies for meeting those goals.

Goal Setting and Reflection

Each Semester, students are supported bytheir PC teachers to complete a reflection onthe previous Semester or Term and then setspecific subject goals for the upcomingSemester. As part of the Parent Student Teacher process,these goals will have been discussed with your son. If you havenot seen your son’s Semester 2 subject goals, please ask himto share them with you. A discussion around how he plans tomeet those goals and regular check ins on those goals is agreat way that parents can support and encourage the learninggrowth and learning habits of their sons.

Study Tip

When setting subject goals, a lot of students state that theyare going to revise their work every night. A great way to dothis is to write down the Learning Goal and Success Criteriaof each lesson and revise those each night. The Learning Goaland Success Criteria make visible the specific learning intentionof each lesson and outline to students how they know if theyare successful in meeting that learning goal. If a student canmeet the Learning Goals and Success Criteria for the lesson,then they move on. If they can’t then they need further followup.

21st Century libraries have four branches to their core business:

• a physical space - different and more accessible fromother spaces around the school, to work, read andresearch;

• the development of a love of literature and literacy -because we cannot create a literate society withouteasy access to and a love for great literature;

• information literacy - because more than ever, ourglobal citizens need to understand how to access theInformation process, critically analyse what they read

P&FDear Parents

I have mentioned over the last few Bulletin articles that the P&FCommittee is working on reviewing our current constitution,and I have also mentioned that there are some changes to theFederation and the view of the role of the P&F in schools.

At our next meeting on 21 August, we have the pleasure tohave Mrs Carmel Nash, who is the Executive Director ofCatholic School Parents Queensland (the new name for theFederation), coming to talk to us about the changes that havebeen made at Federation level, and how this has affected otherschools and colleges, as well as what Parent Engagement(rather than involvement) means and ways in which we as thePadua College Parents and Friends Association can implementthese changes. Carmel will also give us some advice on ourcurrent constitution, so this meeting promises to be veryinteresting and informative.

The meeting will be held on 21 August, at 7pm in the TeachersRoom, next to the staff car park on the Assisi campus.

I hope to see you there.
