    Features

    Unsurpassed innovation

Automatic wavelength andslit setting for maximumconvenienceThe large, self-calibrating 0.33 metre(focal length) monochromator hasbeen specifically designed to providethe high light throughput and stabilityneeded for atomic absorption.Spectral bandwidth is continuouslyadjustable between 0.1 and 2 nm (in0.1 nm increments) and, for furnacework, reduced slit height is availablewith all slit widths. You simply select therequired element, and the wavelength, lamp current, slit width and slit heightare set automatically. Graphical displaysof wavelength scans are available forflame emission work or as a trouble-shooting aid. An optional wide-rangephotomultiplier tube covers the fullwavelength range (175 - 900 nm).

SensAA for maximum energyThe GBC SensAA uses the simplicityand high energy of reflective optics toprovide the best possibleperformance/price ratio. An automaticbaseline zero between samples allowsthe SensAA to be used for extendedperiods with flame or furnaceautosamplers without the problem ofbaseline drift.

SensAA Dual for true doublebeam stabilityThe genuine double beam opticalsystem of the SensAA Dual measuresthe sample and reference signalsevery mains cycle to give the bestcorrection for lamp noise and themost stable baseline possible.

    Protected optical systemensures long-term performance

The SensAA Dual use mirrorsthroughout the optical system to ensurethat correct focus and high energythroughput are maintained at allwavelengths. To protect the opticalsurfaces, a dust cover is fitted over theoptical system and additional protectionis provided by coating the mirrorswith quartz.

    Asymmetric Modulationreduces noise

GBC introduced asymmetricmodulation for double beaminstruments and continues it with theSensAA. Today, the technique hasbeen optimised for the best possibledouble-beam performance, andfurther refined for use in the SensAA.

Most of the noise in an atomicabsorption measurement comesfrom the sample beam. By spendingmore time measuring the samplebeam (twice that of most conventionalsystems) the GBC SensAA reducesnoise by up to 40%.

    Choice of flame

    Guaranteed performance

    Hyper-Pulse backgroundcorrection

The Hyper-Pulse background corrector, one of the fastest systems available, has been further improved by pulse interpolation. This allows formore accurate interpolation of“Transient Signals” such as GF.

With all background correctionsystems, there is a small time delaybetween the measurement ofbackground and total absorbance. When the background is changingvery rapidly, as is often the case withgraphite furnace work, this delay canlead to an error in the backgroundcorrected reading. Systems with slowersampling rates and longer delay timesshow greater errors.

Most background correctors measurethe background absorbance 50 or 60times per second and the delaybetween the measurement ofbackground and total absorbance canbe as much as 10 milliseconds.

The GBC Hyper-Pulse system takes200 (50 Hz) or 240 (60 Hz) samplemeasurements per second and thedelay between the measurement ofbackground and total absorbance isabout 1 millisecond. This produces adramatic reduction in backgroundcorrection errors. Accuracy is furtherimproved by interpolating betweenbackground measurements tocalculate the background when theatomic signal is measured.

This system also allows correction forhigher background levels than mostsystems-up to 2.5 total absorbance.

    Interlocked flame control

This system allows the flame to beignited only if a burner is installed, theliquid trap is full and an air-acetyleneflame is selected. Changeover tothe nitrous oxide-acetylene flame isallowed only if a nitrous oxide-acetyleneburner is present. Push-button flameignition is included.

    GCM (Gas Control Module)

This system is interlocked to protectagainst faults in gas supplies, burnertype, flame detector, mains power, liquidtrap, nebulizer bung and relief bung. Itprovides a programmed ignition andshutdown sequence - if nitrous oxide-acetylene is selected, an air-acetyleneflame is first established and then theacetylene flow is automaticallyboosted before automatic changeoverto the nitrous oxide-acetylene flame.

    Extended Lamp Life

In addition, the design of the highintensity D2 lamp and associated powersupplies ensures unequalled lamplifetime. The GBC lamp will operate for1000 hours even at full current.Compare this to some alternative brandinstruments where the D2 lamp isguaranteed to last only 90 hours ofoperation, and add up the savings!

    Guarantee of performance

GBC is so confident of instrumentquality that it guarantees both sensitivityand precision. GBC's guaranteedperformance is superiorto that of any other company in theworld - greater than 0.8 absorbancefor 5 mg/L copper with an RSD lessthan 0.45% for ten 10-secondintegrations. This performance isachieved by an efficient blend of gooddesign and durable materials.

    Flame atomizationsystem delivers reliabilityand performance

All materials in contact with the samplehave been selected for maximumcorrosion resistance. The spray chamber is made from inertpolypropylene. The burner is madeentirely of titanium. The nebulizer has aplatinum-iridium capillary and atitanium venturi.

The nebulizer also has an adjustablesample uptake rate, essential foroptimum performance with refractoryelements or organic solvents. The wholeflame atomization system is easilyremoved for cleaning or for changeoverto graphite furnace.

    Accuracy and productivity

    Performance

The System 3000 is designed toachieve state-of-the-art sensitivities anddetection limits. Approximately 50elements can be determined, most atsub part-per-billion concentrations. The typical characteristic mass for someof the elements is shown in thefollowing table. (Characteristic mass isthe mass of the element required togive an absorbance of 0.0044).

Element Charac. Element Charac.Mass (pg) Mass(pg)

    Ag 0.9 Fe 1.5Al 5 Mn 0.7As 6 Mo 8Au 4 Ni 5Ba 12 Pb 2.5Cd 0.25 Se 20Co 4 Ti 45Cr 1.5 V 20Cu 2.5

The PAL3000 Programmable AutoLoader provides automaticcalibration with up to 10 standardsand automatic analysis of up to 40samples. Any sample volume between1 and 100 μL may be selected.

Automatic mixing of standardssaves time and improvesreliability

The PAL3000 will automaticallyprepare a series of up to 10 standardsfrom a single stock solution and canalso automatically prepare standardadditions from the stock solution. Thisprocedure eliminates errors in thepreparation of standards, reduces thelikelihood of contamination and savesconsiderable time.

Automatic dispensing ofchemical modifier eliminatesthe need for manual sampletreatment

With many applications, the addition ofa chemical modifier to the sampleimproves sensitivity, reducesbackground absorbance or reduceschemical interferences. The PAL3000can automatically add a specifiedvolume of chemical modifier to eachsample and standard.

    Automatic dilution

Manual dilution is time and labour-intensive and is also prone to errorsand contamination. The PAL3000eliminates these problems byautomatically diluting any over-rangesamples to bring them into thecalibration range.

    Multiple injections forautomatic pre-concentration

Several aliquots of a sample may beinjected and dried prior to atomization. This allows the effective samplevolume to be increased and permitsvery low concentrations to be measuredwithout the need for chemicalpre-concentration procedures.

    Heated injection reducesanalysis time

The PAL3000 can be programmed toinject the sample after the graphite tubetemperature has been raised abovethe boiling point of the solvent. The sample then dries as it is injectedand the time-consuming drying stageis eliminated.

Simple set-up and storage ofprobe co-ordinates

The sampler capillary tip is convenientlyaligned with the furnace tube samplinghole with the use of the cursor keys onthe keyboard. Once established, theco-ordinates are stored in the computer, even when the power is switched off.
