FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHRIST The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized “have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church’s baptism ritual when we sing, “You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized.” This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today’s Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

We just entered into a long stretch in the Church year that we call Ordinary Time. It follows Pentecost and continues until Advent in November. After the excitement of Easter, First Communions, Confir-mations, and other big celebrations in the church we get a time to let it all sink in and settle within us. The readings in Ordinary Time focus on the life and ministry of Jesus and his disciples in the three years before he dies. Ordinary Time is all about being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Being a disciple means following Jesus in word and action. Not just in the big exciting moments when it is easier but in the day to day routines of our lives. God wants to be with us in it all, the dishes, the laun-dry, the interactions with people out and about, etc. How is God inviting you to see holiness in the world around you? How is God inviting you into the lives and needs of others? Our challenge is to listen and to discern where God is in our lives and how we can bring God to others within our ordinary context. Disci-pleship is a commitment that is made over and over in the little things.

What is Ordinary Time?

Upcoming Liturgy Opportunities: Friday June 24th 6-7:30pm Altar Server Appreciation Party in MacMahon. Come join us for pizza, ice cream, fun and games! (Parents & siblings welcome too) Saturday July 9th 11am-12noon Liturgy Workshop in MacMahon. Topic is TBD. Everybody bring something to share!

Our Gospel Reading for today finishes with the Lord telling us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” That may sound somewhat foreboding to us as we strive to follow Him and to be His disciple.

We need to see that from another perspective, how-ever. Jesus was fond of teaching by using references to plants and planting. On multiple occasions he cites seeds in His teachings. If we consider it, we bury a seed; in effect it dies. Nevertheless, it must die for it to fulfill what it was intended to be. It cannot produce fruit, become a tree unless it goes through the process of dying to what it once was.

That is Jesus’ message for us. If we truly wish to follow Him, we must die to what we once may have been, or in some cases to what we may think we want to be. We have to learn to look at ourselves as the Lord might look at us. The ongoing question is “What does the Lord want me to be?” or “How does the Lord want me to serve Him and others?” It is not easy to serve the Lord. It is not comfortable to always think of others first. Yet, those are Jesus’ instructions to us. That is His call to us. As He reminded us many times, “I came to serve, not to be served.” That needs to be our goal as well. That is what stewardship is all about.

Wait Wait – What?

Ordaining Women??? Theology on Tap offers fellowship and discus-sions about topics important in our lives today,

with interesting speakers guiding the conversation, while en-joying your favorite beverages and snacks. The next meeting will be

Wednesday, June 29th, 7:00 PM London Bridge Pub, 256 Figueroa Street (at the foot of

Wharf 2), Monterey

Our speaker this month is Deacon Bill Ditewig, Ph.D., Direc-tor of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Monterey. Deacon Bill is the author of Women Deacons: Past, Present, Future (Paulist Press, 2011). He will lead a discussion on the history of women deacons in the early Church and the possibility of ordaining women today. Pope Francis recently called for a commission to study the possibility of ordaining women as deacons. This very timely meeting is in response to the Holy Father’s action and makes a great follow-up to our March meeting when we talked about the history of women in the Church.

Come join the discussion while enjoying great food, drinks, and friends! Join Monterey Theology on Tap on Facebook! You can also send questions to Deacon Warren Hoy at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

Serra Pilgrimage 2016

We plan to arrive at the Mission around 11:30AM and then celebrate with a Mass in the Basilica in honor of St. Serra at Noon. You must be able to complete a 3-hour hike over various terrains, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing. You must sign up in advance by calling Claudia Larraza at 373-2627, ext. 33 or by emailing her at [email protected] by Tuesday June 28. Celebration Mass for Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Monday, June 27, 2016; Carmel Mission Basilica

A special mass will be celebrated at Noon by Rev. Bill Adams, CSsR to rededicate our devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Celebrating 150 Years since Pope Pius IX gave the icon of Our Mother of Perpet-ual Help to the Redemptorists, with the mandate to “make her known” and foster devotion throughout the world as the Mother of Christ. To this day, the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome displays the icon and welcome pilgrims for prayer.

We thank Elinor Laiolo for the maintenance and refurbishment of one of our

most popular shrines.

Thank you from the USS Stennis; South China Sea

I want to thank all of the parishioners

who sent care packages to the sailors (both male and female) on the USS Stennis, which is return-ing at the end of June to Hawaii. I am enclosing a note from CMC Joe Lovelace, head Enlisted who distributed the care packages.

"I would like to once again express my most sincere appreciation for the care that you and your church have shown the Carrier Air Wing NINE "Shogun" and USS John C. Stennis "Courage" team. I have had the distinct privi-lege of handing out more care packages than I could count. The responses from our Sailors have been overwhelming. It was great to watch each Sailor's smile grow when I pre-sented them with a package and a message that people were thinking about them, cared about them and appreciated their sacrifice. I asked many of them to let me know what they had received, I must say that candy or chocolate were typically the first announcement they made but, they would usually continue with " I really needed that toothpaste or deodorant. It was running low!” They also found great joy in the many books, videos and games that they received. Joan, Your congregation has been a tremendous support team for us during this deployment. They have helped provide smiles and certainly lifted morale for our Sailors at moments when it was needed the most. On behalf of the entire SHOGUN/COURAGE Team, I say thank you and God bless!”

CMC Joe Lovelace

And I thank all of my beloved Carmel parishion-ers who helped in this effort

DOCENT CORNER Do you know what a Basilica is and why the Car-mel Mission became one? The Latin word basil-ica was originally used to describe a Roman pub-lic building, usually located at the center of a Ro-man town (a forum). In Hellenistic cities, public basilicas appeared in the 2nd century B.C. After the Roman Empire officially became Christian, the term evolved to refer to a large and important church that had been given special ceremonial rights by the Pope. When it came time to build major churches, the Roman basilica form was preferable to the Roman temple form which was considered a pagan building. The Major Basilicas are the four great churches of Rome: St. John Lateran, St. Peter's Basilica, St. Paul outside the Walls and St. Mary Major. All the rest are minor basili-cas. There are approximately 1,500 minor basilicas found around the world, of which the majority is in Europe (522 in Italy alone). There are 58 basilicas in the U.S. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Québec was the first basilica in North America (1874) and the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis was the first basilica in the United States (1926). The "privileges" attached to the status of basilica are con-ferred by the Pope and include a certain precedence be-fore other churches, the right to display the conopaeum or umbrellina (a canopy resembling an umbrella) and the bell (Tintannablum). These are found in the rear of the Basilica. Four California Missions are minor basilicas: Carmel Mis-sion was consecrated in 1960 and designated a basilica in 1961 by Pope John XXIII, San Francisco Asis which is the church next to Mission Delores in 1952, Mission San Diego in 1975 and San Juan Capistrano Church (not the original mission) in 2000. The Carmel Mission is a basilica because it fulfilled the following necessary characteristics required by the Church:

It is a place of pilgrimage It is a place of special devotion It is a center of historic significance for the Faith It is architecturally qualified for such an honor. It is artistically qualified for such an honor.

When Pope John Paul II visited the Mission in 1987 he said, “This serene and beautiful place is truly the histori-cal and spiritual heart of California.” And that’s why it is a basilica. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Car-mel Mission Docent Association.

Wednesday, June 8th marked the Graduation of our 8th grade class. The celebration with family and friends began with Mass concelebrated by our pastor Father Paul and Father Miguel in our beautiful Basilica.
