From the Pastor

August 26, 2018

Twentieth First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Dear Parishioners of St. Paul:

Since last, I have written to you we have all been greatly saddened, shocked, and scandalized by the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report outlining the cases of child sexual abuse perpetrated against innocent children over a period of seventy years. There can never be any excuses or rationalization that can be made by this disordered and sinful actions by priests. The attempt to cover up these crimes only has added to their horror and made things worse. These acts of violence are a violation of their sacred vows and a violation of the sanctity of the ordained state. Like all sin it serves as a poison, harming many others and for generations to come.

We pray that this sin will be purged from the Church, as it must be, by prayer and fasting. I ask the forgiveness of all of you and that of God Our Lord.

On Friday of this week August 31st, there will be a special Holy Hour Prayer Service of Reparation. This will be in the Church and will consist of adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, special penitential prayers, and the special invocation to Our Blessed Mother, the Refuge of Sinners. The Evening will begin at 7.00PM and end with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 8.00PM in the Church (not the Chapel).

Please note this is different from our usual First Friday Devotions which will be in the Chapel on the First Friday September 7th. In addition to this special Holy Hour may I invite you to a special First Saturday Mass in Honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Saturday Morning at 9.00AM in the Chapel.

In conclusion may I share with you a beautiful poem written this week by one of our parishioners. I believe it gives us all hope and is used with her permission.

HOW TO SURVIVE A SCANDAL

How do you console a devout, kindly priest

Whose heart has been broken by news of abuse?

How do you comfort him with purpose at least, Who thinks his years spent have been of no use?

How do you manage all that bad news: There are no more chances or reviews?

Don’t you recall that warned we have been?

The trouble and sorrow we would be in?

The addictions eat up every hope of change: The result can be that we become deranged. continued next page

Bishop Discusses Recent Church and Diocesan Developments

on Special Sunday Encounter Program on Telecare

On a special edition of Encounter—Bishop John Barres will discuss Pope Francis’ recent letter to the People of God and our diocese’s response to the challenges put forth affecting the life and mission of our Church. This special program will air on Telecare beginning on Sunday, August 26th at 8:00 p.m. Other air times include: Monday at 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.; Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.; Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; Friday at 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Telecare can be seen on Cablevision channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS TV channel 296, Spectrum channel 162/471. Encounter can also be viewed on demand on drvc.org, licatholic.org, telecaretv.org and on Diocese of Rockville Centre Facebook (Diocese of Rockville Centre) and Twitter (@RVCDiocese) social media platforms. You are encouraged to view this important program.

Will the Lord recognize then who we are?

Will He not chastise us yet from afar?

But if we refuse to take such quick heed, How can we expect suddenly to be freed

From violence, torment, disgrace and shame?

When all things tolerated remained the same?

Remorse and penance can pierce a heart, But they must begin right from the start. Recovery is possible when repentance is valid: It can make a great sinner a hero valiant! Ask Our Dear Lady who was troubled in sorrow

To protect and console you today and tomorrow.

In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James F. Pereda

Dear Ladies of Saint Paul the Apostle Church,

I am writing to you on behalf of the board of the Marian Guild of St. Paul the Apostle Church. I am honored to assume the role of President of the Marian Guild for the 2018 – 2019 term. I am blessed to be joined by both new and returning fellow board members, as well as, a slate of learned advisors.

This year, we hope to expand our membership numbers and, therefore, I ask all of you to encourage your relatives, friends, and neighbors to join our group and to partake in our meetings. Our meetings are a time for friendship, prayer and reflection in support of St. Paul the Apostle Church.

Our Marian Guild meetings are typically held on the third Wednesday of the month and, this year, we have nine (9) monthly meetings, in addition to other “Special Event” dates. This year, our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at 7 pm in Msgr. Costa Parish Hall located in the lower level of St. Paul the Apostle Church. Again, please join us on September 19, 2018, at 7 pm in Msgr. Costa Parish Hall for our “Welcome” meeting.

St. Paul the Apostle Pre-Cana Program

We hope to form a new group of facilitators with specialized training as well as real life personal

experiences in marriage.

Pre-Cana programs for engaged couples will be scheduled twice a year over the course of a

weekend; once at St. Edward the Confessor in Syosset and once here at St. Paul’s. Facilitator

couples time commitment will range from one or two sessions per weekend to the full weekend

based on the number of facilitators involved and how the facilitators wish to participate.

A closing Sunday Mass with the engaged couples will be celebrated as part of the weekend-11:30

am for the St. Edward’s weekend and 11:00 am for the St. Paul’s weekend.

Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation is one of the most rewarding of ministries and an invaluable

experience for young couples preparing to enter into Sacramental Marriage.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the NEW St. Paul’s Pre-Cana Program, please contact:
