OPERATORRESPONSIBILITIES
Operating a motor vehicle on National ForestSystem roads, National Forest System trails, and inareas on National Forest System lands carries agreater responsibility than operating that vehicle in acity or other developed setting. Not only must youknow and follow all applicable traffic laws, you need toshow concern for the environment as well as otherforest users. The misuse of motor vehicles can lead tothe temporary or permanent closure of any designatedroad, trail, or area. As a motor vehicle operator, youare also subject to State traffic law, including Staterequirements for licensing, registration, and operationof the vehicle in question. M otor vehicle use, especially off-highway vehicleuse, involves inherent risks that may cause propertydamage, serious injury, and possibly death toparticipants. Drive cautiously and anticipate roughsurfaces and features, such as snow, mud, vegetation,and water crossings common to remote drivingconditions. By your participation, you voluntarilyassume full responsibility for these damages, risks,and dangers. Take care at all times to protect yourselfand those under your responsibility. M uch of the P rescott National Forest is remote.M edical assistance may not be readily available.Cellular telephones do not work in many areas of theP rescott National Forest. M otorized big game retrieval isprecluded in areas where motorized travel isprohibited, such as wilderness.(Guideline) For the purpose of motorized big gameretrieval:• U se of motor vehicles should be limited to within 1mile of designated roads and motorized trails toretrieve a legally hunted and tagged elk during elkhunting seasons as designated by the ArizonaGame and Fish Department, and for 24 hoursfollowing the end of each season.Only one vehicle (i.e., one trip in and one trip out)per harvested animal should be operated off ofdesignated roads and motorized trails.• Hunters should use the most direct and leastground-disturbing route to accomplish the retrieval.• M otorized big game retrieval should not occurwhen conditions are such that travel would causedamage to natural and/or cultural resources.• M otor vehicles should not cross riparian corridors,streams, and rivers ex cept at hardened crossingsor crossings with ex isting culverts.

Designation of a road, trail, or area for motor vehicleuse by a particular class of vehicle under 36 CFR212.51 should not be interpreted as encouraging orinviting use or implying that the road, trail or area ispassable, actively maintained, or safe for travel. M otorvehicle designations include parking along designatedroutes and at facilities associated with designatedroutes when it is safe to do so and when not causingdamage to National Forest System resources.Seasonal weather conditions and natural events mayrender designated routes and trails impassable forex tended periods. Designated areas may containdangerous or impassable terrain. M any designatedroads and trails may be passable only by high-clearance vehicles or four-wheel-drive vehicles.M aintenance of designated roads and trails will dependon available resources, and many may receive littlemaintenance. This motor vehicle use map identifies those roads,trails, and areas designated for motor vehicle use under36 CFR 212.51 for the purpose of enforcing theprohibition at 36 CFR 261.13. Seasonal and Special Designation
PROHIBITIONSIt is prohibited to possess or operate a motorvehicle on National Forest System lands on thePrescott National Forest other than in accordancewith these designations (CFR 261.13) V iolators of 36 CFR 261.13 are subject to a fineof up to $5,000, imprisonment for up to 6 months, orboth (U .S.C. 3571(e)).This prohibition appliesregardless of the presence or absence of signs. This map does not display nonmotorized uses,over-snow uses, or other facilities and attractionson the P rescott National Forest. Obtain forest visitorinformation from the local national forest office. Designated roads, trails and areas may also besubject to temporary, emergency closures. As avisitor, you must comply with signs notifying you ofsuch restrictions. A national forest may issue anorder to close a road, trail or area on a temporarybasis to protect the life, health, or safety of forestvisitors or the natural or cultural resources in theseareas. Such temporary and/or emergency closuresare consistent with the Travel M anagement R ule(36 CFR 212.52 (b), 36 CFR 261 subpart B). The designation "road or trail open to all motorvehicles" does not supersede State traffic law.
