Presidents Message Dear Quilting Friends, A famous line from the movie A League of Their Own is Theres no crying in baseball.Everyone who has seen the movie remembers Tom Hanks saying this. Its funny and memorable. Maybe its even true. It certainly works in the movie, a burned-out coach yelling at a weepy young woman trying to survive in the world of professional sports. My favorite line from that movie is also said by Tom Hanks and again he is speaking to a cranky, complaining young woman. When she says baseball is hard, he says, Its supposed to be hard. If it wasnt hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great. For a time, everyone comes together in a feeling of solidarity. I can apply this thought to quilting and living during a pandemic. The quotation came to mind this week when I was working on an Elizabeth Hartman pattern. At last years summer retreat, I made Elizabeth Hartmans Bigfoot wall quilt. I complained throughout the entire process and said, Never again!I was exhausted after jumping up to press every little one-inch seam. Then Delores showed me her Hartman pattern for a dachshund wearing a plaid sweater. I come from a long line of dachshund people, so of course I started a block. Those one-inch by 1 ½ inch squares, turned just so, are not my thing. It shows all of my weaknesses, especially my tendency to hurry and assume. There is a happy ending. The pillow is done and ready for my sisters birthday, but it was hard for me! Monthly Membership Meetings June meeting to be announded. I thought of the quotation again when I was walking through the grocery store, trying to find what I wanted while looking through fogged up glasses and breathing through a hot (but cute) homemade face mask. I find masks annoying to make and harder to wear. Quilts are flat; masks have dimension. Quilts are usually all cotton. Masks require elastic or seam binding. As for wearing them, that is definitely hard. And, true to Tom Hanks, not everyone is doing it. When I see someone wearing a cute, colorful, full-of-personality mask, I know that person has a sewist in their life. Im proud to be part of the contingent sewing for others and Im proud to be wearing my mask. It may be hard, but I can do it. In fact, wearing a mask is easier than precision machine sewing! Happy Quilting! Cathy Lane Items Needed Katie Metheny Needed for the quilt show: old sheets – any size. Please give to Jann Warfield or Katie Metheny. Thanks!

President’s Message

Dear Quilting Friends, A famous line from the movie A League of Their Own is “There’s no crying in baseball.” Everyone who has seen the movie remembers Tom Hanks saying this. It’s funny and memorable. Maybe it’s even true. It certainly works in the movie, a burned-out coach yelling at a weepy young woman trying to survive in the world of professional sports. My favorite line from that movie is also said by Tom Hanks and again he is speaking to a cranky, complaining young woman. When she says baseball is hard, he says, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.” For a time, everyone comes together in a feeling of solidarity. I can apply this thought to quilting and living during a pandemic. The quotation came to mind this week when I was working on an Elizabeth Hartman pattern. At last year’s summer retreat, I made Elizabeth Hartman’s Bigfoot wall quilt. I complained throughout the entire process and said, “Never again!” I was exhausted after jumping up to press every little one-inch seam. The pillow is done and ready for my sister’s birthday, but it was hard for me!

Monthly Membership Meetings

June meeting to be announded.

I’m proud to be part of the contingent sewing for others and I’m proud to be wearing my mask. It may be hard, but I can do it. In fact, wearing a mask is easier than precision machine sewing!

Happy Quilting!

Cottage Groups Denise Collado

Missing your Cottage Group buddies? So were the Crazy Patchers! So Leslie Prokop, the more savvy tech member of the group, has put together a virtual meeting for us on Facebook Messenger. Every Tuesday at 11:00 the phone on my iPad rings, and when I answer and turn on my camera and microphone, between six and eight of us are there! Others are experimenting with Zoom. It is a great way to catch up, share projects and ideas, ask for suggestions about which pattern or sashing looks better. All safely from our homes! The best thing is that some of our members are back in Canada and normally, we don't connect until they return for season.

PROGRAM NOTES Ellen Simon

I have made some plans for the summer programs and I sincerely hope we will be able to fol-low through with them. I am very grateful that I have this wonderful hobby (and vocation) to keep me busy while unable to get together with friends and family, but I am more than ready for a dose of quilt inspiration that one can only get at a guild meeting. On July 20 we will host Meg Cox, a quilter and industry spokesperson from Princeton, NJ. Meg will not be braving the “friendly skies” to join us, but will be visiting us virtually. We are plan-ning on this meeting to take place at the church. We are also going to try to make this lecture availa-ble to members remotely through an internet link. Don't have all the specifics yet. This is new terri-tory for us but it has been done by other guilds and I am confident that with Meg's help, we can fig-ure this out. Her topic will be Quilt Journalist Tells All! There will even be a prize drawing. I have been reading Meg's monthly blog for two years now, and she often has giveaways from Moda and other fabric manufacturers. Assuming we are back together, our August meeting will be a members' garage sale. A lot of people have used this time of isolation to clean out and organize so here is an opportunity to sell some of your unwanted goodies. In September, we will welcome Diane Powers Harris from Ocala. Her trunk show is called Challenges-Stepping Stones to Growth. I remember when Chris Lynn Kirsch did a program on quilt challenges – it was fascinating. Diane has lived in Miami and New England and her quilts reflect the different environments. October is the annual Education roll out and book sale. Hope to see you all sometime soon! Ellen Simon

New for 2020—UFO Challenge Suzy Weinbach

And so the UFO Challenge goes on…on steroids as we are all being Pandemic safe locked to our sewing machines, needles and threads and quilting hoops! Okay, so Netflix, Prime, Hulu etc. is the background feed. For me you can also add Audible books on tape and Pandora depending on my mood. Is there an adult beverage at hand, maybe… Sew, continue to work on the challenge. If it is a piece that you need to send off just email me a picture of the front and the back with the label. I will mark it off on your sheet. Also if you would like to join, it is never too late, again email me and I will send you a sign up sheet to fill out and list the 4-5 projects you will work on. There is plenty of time as we have until February 2021 to complete. Happy Quilting and stay safe, Suzy More information is available on the Guild website or you may contact Suzy Weinbach at [email protected] or (303) 517-1587.

Tips and Tricks Delores Simpson

Magical Masking Tape

Here are a few tips for using masking tape In the sewing room:

1. You can create a sewing guide for perfect 1/4” seams. Just stack 3 or 4 strips of tape to the right of the sewing machine needle at the 1/4” line. Run your fabric up against this “ledge” and sew a very straight seam!

2. For trimming up 1/2 square triangles, put 3-4 strips of masking tape diagonally across the center of the wrong side of your square cutting ruler. Abut your sewn seam to this tape ledge to firmly hold the block in place for trimming the edges.

3. When cutting multiple same-size strips, a piece of masking tape pressed to the desired meas-urement makes the measuring/cutting go much quicker with no mistakes!

If you have any tips or tricks for Quilters, please send them to me for sharing in future newsletters.

Thanks!

Quilts in Paradise 2021: Fabric and Fiber Unleashed

Donor Quilt Denise Collado and Elva Farrell

Tickets! Tickets! Tickets! It’s all about tickets-and selling tickets! To encourage on-line sales we are offering a free ticket for every book of tickets (that’s 7 tickets for $5). And to make it even easier, in addition to having a post office box, specific to the quilt, so you don’t have to give out your personal address, we now have a PayPal account ( [email protected]). The [email protected] will be used for quilt show information and the [email protected] will be used for information about tickets and for purchasing tickets with PayPal. We need everyone’s help to promote the on-line sales. Send an email to your contacts, post on your Facebook page, and the home page of groups you belong to, post on other social media pages. Here’s a suggested post: You can personalize your post any way you wish. The picture can be copied from our website. Additional information for members: For those of you who picked up your tickets at either the January or February meeting, please get the stubs and purchase checks back to Denise Collado ASAP. Haven’t picked up your tickets yet? Here’s the plan…. If you have not yet picked up your tick-ets and you plan to purchase the tickets for yourself, send $20 to Denise Collado using the tickets sales mailbox address (FKQG, P.O. Box 376, Osprey, FL) and she will: a) fill out the stubs with your name and cell phone number, b) credit your 24 ticket obligation to FKQG and c) send you a text with a picture of the stubs with your name. If you plan to sell your 24 tickets to others-you have sent emails to your family and friends or posted to your Facebook groups-have the purchaser send their money and cell phone number to Denise at our mailbox, using YOUR name as the member name in the attention line. Denise will: a) fill out the stubs in the purchaser’s name and with that person’s cell number, b) give you (the member) credit for the FKQG obligation and c) send a text to the purchaser with a picture of the stubs, along with a thank you note, to con-firm the purchase. Let’s see how many tickets we call sell during this stay at home time. If you have questions, contact Elva Farrell ([email protected]) or Denise Cordova Collado ([email protected]).

This stunning queen size quilt was made by 10 members of our quilt guild. It is our donor quilt for our show next March. Ticket information is on our website: www.FriendshipKnotQuilters.com or on our Facebook page: Friendship Knot Quilters Guild. For more info email [email protected]

Quilts in Paradise: Fabric and Fiber Unleashed

2021 Small Quilt Silent Auction Cass Bowen, Helen Lucas and Trish Bobeck

Hello everyone far and near. If you’re like me, you’re still staying close to home wondering if it’s safe to “go back in the water”. I have not ventured out yet to a restaurant or the gym. I’ve been occupying a lot of my time eating – chips, chocolates, bagels and cream cheese (I’m sure the bagels caused me to gain 3 lbs last week or maybe it was happy hour). But what else is there to do? I could finish a UFO’s that I entered in Suzi’s UFO Challenge. That’s a novel idea…Or I could try something new. I have been working on a challenge quilt for South Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild. The challenge was to draw a card from a deck of playing cards. Whatever card you drew, you had to design and make a modern quilt 14x22” in the colors of black, white, gray and red (any shade of red) representing the playing card. I drew the Ace of Diamonds. It was a challenge for sure but I’m now quilting it and it will be FINISHED soon. The reason for this story is, try something new or challenging. What have you got to lose? It really can help with the boredom or struggles of being confined to home. And that is my public service message for the day! I hope you’re working on some small quilts for the show. We need them. For our new members and regular members, our goal is to have at least 100 quilts – 50 for each day of the show. Quilts can be appliquéd, pieced, or paper-pieced. Total perimeter should not exceed 80 inches. They can be square, rectangular or round – you decide. There is no minimum perimeter measurement. The quilt should have a sleeve or some type of hanger on the back. Please label your quilt or pin your name on the back. Hopefully we will sell them all but if not, they will be returned to the maker. Since we no longer have a boutique for you to display your handmade items, this is your chance to make something special for the quilt show. The guidelines are posted on the website in the quilt show section. Please turn them in to me, Helen or Trish at any of the future meetings and call us with any questions you might have.

Baskets, Baskets, Baskets

Lynne Minguez

To date, I have received only about 3 baskets for the basket auction and only 3 or 4 groups have signed up to do a themed basket. Since we are social distancing, it is hard to go look for baskets and to plead my case in person! Hopefully visions of themed baskets are dancing in your head. I have the fol-lowing themes signed up for: Chocolate, Cooking and Baking, Serger. Items for themed baskets are welcome. If you would like to sign up for a themed basket for either your cottage group or individual-ly, please contact Lynne Minguez at [email protected] or 941-232.5890. Thank you…looking forward to not being so distant!!

Block Auction

Lynn Purple, Linda Swanson, Karen Clark, Tommy Fitzsimmons

So, what do you do when you’ve cleaned all the closets, the barbecue and the pantry? When you’ve seen every movie that Netflix offers and have maxed out your Kindle? You have made masks for all your grandsons, your children, their spouses, neighbors, the grabby woman down the block and your mother-in-law? It could be time to go back into your sewing studio and make some blocks for the block auction. I know it’s really unbelievable, but there are Friendship Knot Guild members who are actually doing just that. If you finish them and don’t want to keep them at your house you can bring them to my house (keeping the 10-foot distance) or mail them to me (packages sprayed with disinfectant before they came into the house). Last show we had fifty-five block sets donated and we really hope that we’ll

Attention Mask Makers and Gown Sewers Cathy Lane

Tell Joy Abbott what charitable sewing you’ve done – hospice gowns, masks for the hospital or community groups, etc. This enables us to keep our non-profit status. Quotation from Shonda Rhimes in a recent Time magazine: If you are feeling helpless, help someone else. If you are feeling alone, don’t ignore another person’s loneliness. If you are afraid, be brave for someone else. Things feel more doable if they are not about you.

____________________ Help needed: The Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild Bylaws and Policies must be reviewed every two years. Cathy Lane and Delores Simpson have agreed to do this review. Contact Cathy if you would like to be part of the team giving input on the structure of the guild. We plan to start the job in the fall.

Quilts in Paradise: Fabric and Fiber Unleashed get at least that many. The gals (Tommy, Linda and Karen) and I know that with all the pent-up ener-gy social distancing has caused, our 2021 attendance is going to be legendary and we want the Block Auction to be up to the challenge. So, ladies . . . Cheers and keep quilting, Lynn, Linda, Karen and Tommy

Shelter Bed Buddy Workshop

Jane Sanks

The American Red Cross remains closed as I write this article. Our workshops are cancelled until they reopen. My sewing volunteers have continued to sew to stock up so once we are back to our workshops, we will have lots of beds to get ready for delivery. Our 2020 total remains at 220. I went to Petsmart to get flea medication for my cats. While I was there I looked into the room for adoptable cats. There, a lovely cat was sleeping on one of the beds this group made. This made me smile. I know our work is appreciated. Thank you for all your contributions of scraps and fabric. You may drop off your bags of scraps at my home, 7323 Bounty Dr., which is in Gulf Gate. Call me for directions. Workshop dates will be updated as time rolls forward. You may call me for more information: Jane Sanks (941) 923-4240 or (941) 726-2849. If you prefer, you could also send an email to [email protected].

Everyone is safe at the Lane house. Cathy Lane embroidered Frieda’s Nut House following a free tutorial on Laura Wasil-

owski’s website. Many designers and fabric manufacturers offer free patterns and tutori-als.

Red, black and white are the Catholic Universi-ty of America school colors. My grandson has won $220,000 over four years in scholarships. The black and orange print quilt goes to a friend in Charlottesville with lung issues. Denise Collado

Hi Everyone, I hope you have had an opportunity to create beautiful works of art for the quilt show during this tough time. When we can meet again in person, I have some door prizes for you! The first one will go to the person who reads this and emails me at [email protected] with the answer. The question is: I have Two Left Feet, what design is on my socks? (Hint: They belong on your fingers!) Good luck! (If you're out of town, I will mail the prize to you!)

I will have another door prize to be chosen from the people who wear their name tags to the next meeting! I will need a reminder because I am TERRIBLE with names!

I haven't been able to sew much during this time because we have not missed a beat at my law firm, BUT, I did have time to finish organizing my quilting studio in my new home. I hope to get "Rosie" up and running soon and begin to learn how to longarm quilt. Here's some pictures! Kathy Shanley

Two projects: baby quilt and a wedding gift, not yet quilted. Ellen Simon
