OUTLOOK on Active Aging Page 1 CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH SENIOR SERVICES SENIOR CENTER IN CENTRAL PARK www.hbcoa.org 18041 Goldenwest Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92648 (714) 536-5600 Open Mon - Thur 8 A.M. to 8:30 P.M., Fri 8 A.M.to 5 P.M. Sat 8 A.M. to 1 P.M., Closed Sunday T he fabulous women of the Assistance League of Huntington Beach are dedicated to serving their community in a multitude of capacities. One way that they are able to provide assistance is through fundraising at the local Assistance League Thrift Shop located at Beach and Slater. This fall, the Senior Center in Central Park will be host to a Fall Fashion Show and Boutique on November 13th at 1 P.M. The models, as well as all of the outfits, will be selected from the HB Assistance League and their Thrift Shop. Please mark your calendar and come enjoy the show, the fashion, and the fun; all while supporting the Assistance League and, in turn, your community. Tickets are on sale now for $10 at the senior center front desk and includes entry to the show, the boutique, and light refreshments. Come and join the fun. The first walk will be high fashion in the style of Iris A pfel and the women of Advanced Style, the famous New York Senior Fashion blog, followed by two additional walks of seasonal selections. You don’t want to miss out on this wonderful inaugural event. One of the many ways the Assistance League serves the senior community directly is through their auxiliary group known as the DreamCatchers. The DreamCatchers were founded in 1993 by a group of working women interested in meeting community needs, but with limited time to donate. Today, DreamCatchers’ efforts help fund many philanthropic programs that provide assistance to children and adults. One specific area where they provide support is through the senior’s initiative which gives grocery certificates and Access bus passes to senior residents. These supplements are distributed at the discretion of the care managers at the senior center and help to support ongoing services to at risk and vulnerable homebound seniors. In addition to the grocery certificates, the DreamCatchers also assemble and deliver seasonal gift bags several times a year. The bags are delivered by the care managers and delight the recipients with holiday treats and home essentials like cleaning supplies and postage stamps. Community partnerships, like the Assistance League DreamCatchers, allow the Senior Center in Central Park to go above and beyond in providing invaluable support in aging services to the community of senior residents. This allows seniors to age in place and in their own communities. Senior Services is proud of this long standing partnership that has endured for many years. As part of their mission Assistance League members “transform the lives of children and adults through community programs” and their vision is that essential needs are met in our community and families flourish” . Please stop by the front desk for your tickets to the hottest fashion show of the season! -RP Iris Apfel

Greetings friends. October is a busy month and we welcome you to participate in the many activities and workshops offered! These wonderful activities would not be possible without the partnership of the HBCOA and other agencies that support our activities and services at the center. We are fortunate to have such generous community partnerships! As summer turns into fall, it’s time to start thinking about flu prevention. Hoag Hospital is generously donating and administering flu vaccines at the flu shot clinic on Friday, October 5th from 9a.m.-12p.m. If you have not received your vaccine yet, this is a great opportunity. No pre-registration is required; just drop on by. The HBCOA is sponsoring a Wii bowling tournament between our very own Surf City Strikers and Fountain Glen on October 4th at 10:30a.m. We’re looking forward to an exciting tournament! Whether you are an experienced Wii Bowler or brand new, stop by and try it out. The Surf City Strikers practice every Wednesday at 9:00a.m. in the Game room and they are always accepting new players. The HBCOA and the Senior Center in Central Park are excited to announce the Autumn Dance on Friday, October 19th from 7p.m.-10p.m. The Nic Pepper Trio will provide a wonderful evening of entertainment and Love at First Bite is catering. I’d like to extend a big thank you to Orange Coast Memorial for providing a photo booth so you can take home delightful memories. Tickets are available at the front desk while supplies last. Lastly, I would like to thank Greater Newport Physicians and the Lions Club for sponsoring and providing food at the Pancake Breakfast in September. We appreciate the kind donations to make this fun morning happen. Happy October! Kristin Martinez Recreation Supervisor

TRICK OR TREAT: Food Edition

Sometimes the foods that we think are healthy, are actually “tricks” or unhealthy. Conversely, there are also some foods that have an unhealthy stigma, but

actually offer quite a few health benefits. Here is our top three list of “trick” foods to avoid and “treat”

foods to consume this upcoming season:

Tricks: 1. Granola: The high amounts of carbohydrates and

sugar found in most granola can turn this seemingly healthy snack into one to stay away from.

2. Dried Fruit: Added sugars and preservatives found in many dried fruit packages ruin the natural

benefits of fresh fruit. 3. Diet/Zero-Sugar Sodas: The artificial sweeteners

found in these type of sodas can be harmful to the body and are even linked to cancer.

Treats: 1. Dark Chocolate: Due to its powerful antioxidant

content, dark chocolate containing 70% or more cacao eaten in moderation provide health benefits such as decreased risk of high blood pressure.

2. Red Wine: Red wine is another “treat” because of the antioxidants it contains. If you choose to consume, select an organic red wine, in moderation.

3. Coconut Oil: High in healthy fats, extra virgin organic coconut oil is a great natural anti-microbial

and can help the health of hair, skin, and nails.

VOLUNTEER NEWS Volunteers Make Life Better!

AARP Tax Volunteers Needed AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is looking for compassionate and friendly volunteers to join their team. The AARP foundation has been around for almost 50 years, providing assistance to taxpayers, especially those 50 and older who can’t afford a tax preparation service. Retirement or other life changes can make taxes a little more complex, and AARP Tax Volunteers help taxpayers get the credits and deductions they have already earned. There are many different roles where you can volunteer: Client facilitators welcome taxpayers, help organize

their paperwork and manage overflow of service.

Tax counselors work with taxpayers directly, filling

out tax returns and helping them find the deductions

and credits they have earned.

Technology Coordinators manage computer

equipment, ensure taxpayer data is secure, and provide

technical assistance to volunteers at multiple sites.

Bilingual speakers in all roles, especially dedicated

interpreters who can assist other volunteers.

Experience isn't necessary. AARP provides training and IRS certification on the latest tax law, forms and software. To get started, go to this web site: www.aarpfoundation.org/taxaidevolunteer . Your

application will go to the AARP Volunteer Tax-Aide Coordinator in this area who will contact you around the end of Oct. The deadline for applying is the middle of October.

Holiday Meals Delivery Deliver meals to a homebound senior resident who is alone for the holidays on Thanksgiving or Christmas between 11a.m. –1p.m. It is a great family service project and a wonderful way to give back to the community during this season of sharing.
