XXIV SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
Confession of the sin and the mercy of God, inter-cession and thanksgiving, always go hand in hand in the Bible. The psalms give abundant testimony of it. When he addresses God to express his grati-tude by evoking the benefits received, to ask him to renew them, or to implore his help in need, the psalmist always appears before the Lord recogniz-ing himself sinful. But he does not appear before him as a guilty man, overwhelmed by the weight of his guilts, trembling at the accusing glance of his angry lord. Sin is an act of ingratitude towards Someone whose wounded love remains intact, but is always willing to forgive anyone who welcomes his infinite tenderness.
The renewed experience of this constant conduct of God implies the duty to forgive in the same way the offenses that others inflict on us. "Wrath and wrath are hateful." How could we ask for or re-ceive divine forgiveness by keeping resentment against our neighbor in our hearts? That would amount to self-exclusion from the covenant, from divine friendship. What a horror in the eyes of God and men!
Jesus recalled the equivalence of the two com-mandments of love for God and neighbor. The so-called "Law of the Talion" was intended to prevent reprisals, revenge and punishment disproportionate to the crime committed and damage caused. Jesus goes much further: He commands even the ene-mies to love and pray for them. Christians, insol-vent debtors to whom God forgives their debts, must forgive constantly and without any calcula-tions: "seventy times seven."
It depends on the authenticity of their belonging to Christ, to which they refer, the worship they cele-brate, their prayer and, ultimately, their justice be-fore God. May the Spirit, who makes them a com-munity of children of the merciful Father, come to the aid of his weakness. Then they will be able to say with confidence, daily, and at the moment of receiving the body and blood of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the prayer that the Lord Himself taught us: "Our Father, for-give us our trespasses, we forgive those who tres-pass against us. "

Confesión del pecado y de la misericordia de Dios, intercesión y acción de gracias, van siempre de la mano en la Biblia. Los salmos dan abundante testi-monio de ello. Cuando se dirige a Dios para expre-sar su agradecimiento evocando los beneficios reci-bidos, para pedirle que los renueve, o para implorar su auxilio en la necesidad, el salmista se presenta siempre ante el Señor reconociéndose pecador. Pe-ro no se presenta delante de él como un culpable abrumado por el peso de sus culpas, temblando ante la mirada acusadora de su señor irritado. El pecado es un acto de ingratitud hacia Alguien cuyo amor herido permanece intacto, pero siempre está dis-puesto a perdonar a todo el que se acoge a su infini-ta ternura. La experiencia renovada de esta conducta constante de Dios implica el deber de perdonar del mismo modo las ofensas que los otros nos infligen. “Furor y cólera son odiosos”. ¿Cómo podríamos pedir o recibir perdón divino guardando en nuestro corazón rencor contra el prójimo? Eso equivaldría a autoex-cluirse de la alianza, de la amistad divina. ¡Qué ho-rror a los ojos de Dios y de los hombres! Jesús recordó la equivalencia de los dos manda-mientos del amor a Dios y al prójimo. La llamada “Ley del talión” tenía como finalidad impedir las represalias, las venganzas y los castigos despropor-cionados al crimen cometido y al daño causado. Jesús va mucho más allá: manda amar incluso a los enemigos y orar por ellos. Los cristianos, deudores insolventes a los que Dios perdona sus deudas, de-ben perdonar constantemente y sin ningún tipo de cálculos: “setenta veces siete”. De ello depende la autenticidad de su pertenencia a Cristo, a la que se remiten, del culto que celebran, de su oración y, en fin, de su justicia ante Dios. Que el Espíritu, que hace de ellos una comunidad de hi-jos del Padre misericordioso, venga en ayuda de su debilidad. Entonces podrán decir con toda confian-za, diariamente, y en el momento de recibir el cuer-po y la sangre del Cordero de Dios que quita el pe-cado del mundo, la oración que el mismo Señor nos enseñó: “Padre nuestro, perdona nuestras ofensas, como también nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden”.
