Page 2 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Overview

– Goal: to define a service option to test IS-2000 physical channels for RC>2 radio configurations.

– Major Requirements:» Service option connects at the Multiplex Sublayer» Support for generating both primary and secondary traffic

types on all valid combinations of Forward and Reverse link radio configurations

» Allow other service option(s) to operate concurrently on other unused physical channels

» Separate BER and/or FER statistics to be maintained for each physical channel under test

» Allow both MS and base station to control “test interval” parameters and retrieve counter values associated with error statistics collected on each physical channel

» A method to generate varying data bit patterns for the FCH/DCCH and SCH(s) to carry according to a selectable random or deterministic duty cycle

Page 3: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Overview (contd..)

– Major Requirements (contd..)

– Support for 40ms and 80ms frame lengths on the Supplemental Channels

– When a Supplemental channel rate change is signaled by the base station, the TDSO adjusts to the new rate and carries on the test

– The TDSO adjusts to the new physical channel scenario after a hard handoff is completed

Page 4: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 5 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Some assumptions/restrictions:» Other service option(s) not permitted to share the same

physical channels as have been allocated to the TDSO at any given time - except for signaling

» Supplemental channels are allocated by the base station for an “infinite” duration, the MS shall release the TDSO call in case it receives a SCH de-allocation notice from the BS any time during the test interval

» No transmission at the physical layer due to running out of TX headroom is treated as a channel impairment. This may introduce some inaccuracies into the FER/BER calculations for the particular channel

Page 6: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 6 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

• Test Interval parameters:– DATA_SOURCE

» ‘0’ Selectable Byte Pattern» ‘1’ Pseudo-random bits

– FRAME_SOURCE : Indicates how the frames should be built every frame period

» ‘00’ Default - Circular buffer holds 2 Full frames (maximum rate for configured RC) worth of data

» ‘01’ Circular buffer holds N Full frames (maximum rate for configured RC) worth of data

» ‘10’ Generate new frames every frame period

– DUTY_CYCLE» ‘0’ Deterministic

– TX_ON_PERIOD , 8-bit field (x20, 40 or 80ms)– TX_OFF_PERIOD, 8-bit field (x20, 40 or 80ms)

» ‘1’ PERC_DUTY_CYCLE field indicates a target of D% duty cycle on average

Page 7: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 7 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Default parameter settings:» DATA_SOURCE - Byte Pattern (0xFF)» DUTY_CYCLE - deterministic (100% duty cycle)

– TX_ON_PERIOD = 0x01, TX_OFF_PERIOD = 0x00

– Change of test parameters signaled by the BS through Service Option Control Message directive collectively for all TDSO associated channels or selectively for each channel and direction (fwd/rev/both)

– Mobile station proposes a change of test parameters through the Service Option Control Message directive, however it is the base station that invokes the service through the SOCM

– The BS also uses the SOCM to indicate an error in the MS proposed values for the test parameters as well as lack of support for a specific test configuration or value e.g., circular buffer size

Page 8: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 8 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Procedures: For most part same as Markov Service Option - very close to Markov SO fixed rate test mode

– For mobile originated TDSO calls, in absence of any special configuration at the BS, the TDSO initializes with FCH only carrying primary traffic using Mux Option 0x01

– Only full rate or blank frames supplied to the multiplex sublayer for each physical channel. Half rate frames are supplied by the TDSO on FCH/DCCH only when commanded by the multiplex sublayer

– Test interval subdivided into independent segments of 10.24 seconds (corresponding to 512, 256 or 128 frame periods at 20ms, 40ms and 80ms physical channel frame lengths)

– All pseudo-random number generators associated with the channel(s) are re-initialized prior to packet processing for each synchronization frame

– Pseudo-random processes are synchronized between the mobile station and the base station for each physical channel (separately for fwd. and rev. links)

Page 9: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 9 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Synchronization frame» Fwd. Traffic Channels (F-FCH, F-DCCH, F-SCH1 and F-

SCH2): – frame_num ^ 0x1aa = 9 LSBs of PLCM_32

» Rev. Traffic Channels (R-FCH, R-DCCH, R-SCH1 and R-SCH2):

– frame_num ^ 0x155 = 9 LSBs of PLCM_32

– PLCM_32 - Least 32 bits of the Public Long Code Mask

– Sync-time seeds for PN generators» Fwd. Traffic Channels: frame_num ^ 0x2aaaaaaa» Rev. Traffic Channels: frame_num ^ 0x55555555

Page 12 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Control Directive from Mobile Station

– Mobile station can only propose the values for the various TDSO parameters through the Service Option Control Message using the same message format as the base station

– The base station looks at the various fields and sends an invocation to the mobile station using the SOCM if the parameters requested by the MS are within allowed range and BS has the capability to support all of them

– Otherwise the base station sends an SOCM with an appropriate ERROR_CODE to the MS and the MS can propose an alternative set of parameters by sending the SOCM again

– Depending upon the test parameter in question, the BS may indicate its capabilities to the MS by replacing the particular field in the mobile proposed SOCM with the maximum value it can support, e.g., number of frames in the circular buffer

Page 13: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 13 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Counter Retrieval Directive

– Used by the BS/MS to request actual transmit and receive frame/PDU counters maintained by the MS/BS for each physical channel

– Can be used in arriving at a more accurate calculation of the error statistics

– Example: MS Responses to Control Directives for Supplemental Channels

VECT_COUNTER_ID Vector Name

‘00000000’ FER Counters Response

‘00000001’ PER Counters Response

‘00000010’ Transmitted Counters Response

Page 14 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Data Block Format

– Each data block passed to the multiplex sublayer has its first 5 bits replaced by a header

– The CHANNEL_ID bits help attribute a received data block to a particular physical channel

– The PDU_SEQ_NUM bits are used to distinguish Mux PDUs within a received Supplemental channel frame

Page 15 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Pseudo-random DATA_SOURCE» At the synchronization frame, for each physical channel,

pseudo random data is generated to fill a circular buffer with TWO full frame lengths of data bits as determined by the maximum channel transmission rate for the configured RC

– Selectable Byte Pattern DATA_SOURCE» default value 0xFF» All bytes in the data blocks passed to the multiplex

sublayer for a given frame period carry the same pattern

Page 16: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 16 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Random DUTY_CYCLE» An average D% duty cycle is achieved by modeling the

ON and OFF events as a 2 state first order Markov chain

– Deterministic DUTY_CYCLE» Determined by the 8-bit TX_ON_PERIOD and

TX_OFF_PERIOD fields in the Service Option Control Message

Page 17 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Handling of Supplemental Channel rate change:

– During a test call, whenever the MS receives a message signaling a change in the Supplemental channel configuration like change in transmission rate, the TDSO shall re-initialize with the default data pattern (0xFF) and duty cycle (100%) on that channel till the next synchronization frame

– The FER/PER counters shall be reset to zero

– At the first synchronization frame time after this, the TDSO shall use the same values for the test parameters as were being used before the transmission rate change

Page 18: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 18 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Handling of CDMA-CDMA Hard Handoff:

– After a CDMA-CDMA hard handoff is completed, the TDSO shall re-initialize with the default data pattern (0xFF) and duty cycle (100%) on the configured channels till the next synchronization frame

– The FER/PER counters shall be reset to zero

– If the TDSO call in progress is a mobile originated call, at the first synchronization frame, the MS shall propose the pre-handoff test parameters to the BS in a Service Option Control Message

Page 19: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 19 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– FER/PER Calculation:

– FER - Frame error rate, PER- PDU error rate

– Transmit and receive frame counters maintained for each physical channel

– Receiving station reproduces the transmitted packets and compares them to the received packets

– Frame categories received during TX_OFF_PERIOD are also taken into account

– Dim-and-burst and blank-and-burst frames ignored in the FER calculation

– For the DCCH/FCH channels, PER = FER.

– Example: For F-FCH/DCCH, the equation for FER is:

FERRate 1 (Forward) = 1 – (TDSO_E1_R1m + TDSO_EN_RNm)/(TDSO_E1_T1b + TDSO_EB_TBb)

TDSO_E1_R1m denotes the number of Rate 1 frames received when TDSO expects a Rate 1 frame (MS)TDSO_EN_RNm denotes the number of Null frames received when TDSO expects a Null frame (MS)TDSO_E1_T1b denotes the number of Rate1 frames transmitted when TDSO supplies a Rate 1 frame (BS)TDSO_EB_TBb denotes the number of Blank frames transmitted when TDSO supplies a Blank frame (BS)

Page 20: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.

Page 20 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000

Implementation (contd..)

– Conducting a TDSO test

– Start a TDSO call (or clear the counters of an existing call)

– To conduct a TDSO test with a random data source, set the DATA_SOURCE field to ‘1’ and CLEAR_COUNTERS field to ‘1’ in the SOCM based Control directive for the particular physical channel

– Wait for the test interval to elapse

– Direct the MS to make a copy of the counters

– Wait for the fwd. and rev. synchronization frame after the action time to occur

– Retrieve the values of the copied counters from the mobile station and compute the FER/PER

Page 21: Page 1 Test Data Service Option for IS-2000 Jan. 10, 2000 Duncan Ho, Scott Fischel 3GPP2 C00-20000110-012 3GPP2 C40-20000112-011 ©2000 QUALCOMM Incorporated.
