2019 Hensley Scholar

is Dylan Youngblood

The Gift

Years ago, Jeanette Hensley endowed a fund to provide a scholarship for an active member of the parish who recently graduated from high school. The scholarship is intended to be used by someone who is planning to extend their education through college, university, or vocational studies. Every year, St. Mary's Episcopal Church hosts an essay contest to determine the recipi-ent of the scholarship.

Preface

The phrase Border Security serves as an umbrella for many different topics of conversation in

the United States. One of them relates to human migration and the issue of immigration. This

year's question asks you to reflect upon how Christian people should regard the movement of

people from one place to another in a time when nations claim to have sovereign boundaries.

The Question

In 1500 words or less (about 2.5 pages) answer the following question: How does the Christian

concept of neighbor contribute to a discussion concerning the issue of border security, human

migration, and immigration?

Among your spiritual resources is Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). You

may also refer to other scriptural and non-scriptural resources as well.

It is hard to believe that these children are smiling given they are at the hospital and have endured long days of chemotherapy and oftentimes weeks away from friends and family. But they are and it is because of you! Some of the best and most important people in our lives may never show up on the 10 o'clock news or see their names up in lights- but the world would definitely miss them if they were gone. Each of you in your own way goes about your daily lives, quietly and genuinely giving so much of yourself, but expecting so little in return.

"Memorial Day, our son went to a local hospital with arm pain. The following day we were transported to the hospital and given a diagnoses of Stage IV Burkitt Lymphoma. Blake began an aggressive cycle of chem-otherapy within hours of transportation to the hospital as the cancerous tumors are extremely fast moving. Within three weeks chemotherapy needed to stop. By week seven Blake was finished the fight and he went to Heaven. During our seven weeks in the hospital we were blessed by Ryan's Case for Smiles. And the bless-ing hasn't stopped. We never were able to bring our son home, but we were able to bring home the case that Blake had used while we were there. Our other children also had the opportunity to pick out cases. Thank you so much for giving such a valuable and last-ing gift to my family. We are forever grateful to you!"

Bringing comfort to children has always been the core of our mis-sion but did you know that we are helping the entire family cope with the illness today, while building resilience to thrive in the fu-ture? Visit CopingSpace to learn more about the valuable resources available thanks to your incredible support.

Financial Summary for April…………………………...

April financial results failed to show the improvement for which we had hoped. After recognizing additional expenses associated with Holy Week, our deficit for the month exceeded budget by nearly $5,200 dollars and brought our year to date deficit to more than $26,300 dollars. When the Vestry approved the budget, we had slightly less than $350,000 of pledges in hand; today with the addition of pledges from new members, we actually have more than $364,000 committed to support operations for 2019. Under these circumstances, the Pledge Payments top line of the income section above should exceed the budgeted number, which is clearly not the case. One idea advanced at the May Vestry meeting was to challenge the congregation to consider using one of the available means to complete our pledge by ACH or credit card. This would ensure that payments were made in a timely fashion without requiring parishioners to remember to write and bring a check to place in the plate during the offertory. Many of us pay a wide variety of monthly obligations through ACH, commonly known as bank drafts. A monthly draft for all or a portion of your pledge would help the parish smooth out and manage cash flow to meet our many commitments and obligations. The form necessary to initiate an ACH will be available from the Ushers in the Narthex where you pickup your bulletin or on the next page for you to print and fill out and return to the office.

ST. MARY’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH VESTRY MINUTES

April 16, 2019

PRESENT: Father Mark Story, Sr. Warden Andy Smith, Jr. Warden Mike Ryan, Jr. Warden-Elect Tim Bridges, John Harrison, Bill Lambert, Debbie Hand, Traci Hampton, Kyle Baker, Treasurer Ben Kenyon ABSENT: Mark McLochlin GUESTS: None I. MEETING Fr. Mark called the April meeting of the Vestry to order. II. AMEND OR APPROVE MINUTES Minutes from the March meeting were reviewed. A motion was made by Andy Smith to approve the minutes, with a second by Deb Hand. PASSED (1) III. FINANCE TEAM REPORT Ben Kenyon. February financials. Ben has prepared a brief explanation of the church’s current finances to include in the Magnificat with the March financial summary. We have budgeted to take about $40,000 off the balance sheet for 2019 and at the current rate of pledged receipts that deficit amount would double. In order to save some money on postage we are going to put the member financial summaries in sealed envelopes in alphabetical order for people to pick up when they go into the service on Easter Sunday. Wells Fargo report. The gains so far this year have fully erased all of the losses for 2018. For the life of the fund we are at 5.23%. Year to date we are at 9.06%. We will be pulling about $2.5 million out of the $3.5 million that is in there as we go through the construction process. We were notified of a payroll audit by the Diocese. It was recommended that the conclusions of the audit be referred to the finance committee and come back next month with a proposal. Motion to refer the payroll audit to the finance committee made by Mike Ryan, second by Traci Hampton. Approved (2) IV. RECTOR’S REPORT Fr. Mark Story. a. UCO called and said they want to build a parking lot west of the building. They have a plan they are working on and they will run it by us as a courtesy. b. The oil and gas records are still at Mike Morey’s house. John Harrison will make plans to pick them up. c. We still need to replace Rachels’s spot on the Vestry. d. We want to memorialize the new organ in some way to Roger Banks. We need to think about a creative way to do that. V. SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT a. We had about 36 people attend the newcomers gathering at Andy and Carol’s house. We would like to follow up with the people who couldn’t come to have another newcomers gathering. b. Karl Nelson used the church van to take a group down to Denton for a concert and is going to pay the church $200 for that.

c. We have a date on the Bishop’s calendar to meet about our new building on May 7. We hope to get a green light from him and the Diocesan Council to begin construction. VI. JUNIOR WARDEN’S REPORT Mike Ryan. We got a letter from the city after a complaint from a neighbor near the Mary Lee Lane house, that the weeds are up and there is trash all over. Mike drove by there and there is no trash but the weeds are up. Mike called Tom Byrd and he will mow and take care of it. The house needs some work, painting and patching. We need to get this work done before we can rent the house. Mike and Ben will work on getting somebody to do the work. The painting will cost about $1500 and another $500 for the rest. We will list the property for rent as soon as the work is done and it is showable. V. OLD BUSINESS/NEW BUSINESS Tim reported that the diocese is making an effort to get a lot of the parishes that do not have websites a presence on the web. They are offering those web services to all the churches. They provide a number of different tem-plates and you can put up as many pages as you want. It costs $45 a month or $65 a month with video. They will help you design it and they say it will be self maintainable. With our current situation we have an agreement with Net Pro Consulting, Bob Peterson the owner and our consultant. We paid $1800 to get our website where it is now. He invoices us quarterly $240 for services but he hasn’t done much. We determined recently that we are almost a year behind in paying because he was sending them to the wrong address. Bob told us recently that he can do away with the $80 a month and just charge us $100 an hour for consulting if we need it. We will probably stick with what we have now at least for the near term. No further business being brought forward, following prayer, the meeting was adjourned. Submitted,

John Harrison, Clerk MOTIONS: A MOTION was made by Andy Smith to approve the minutes, with a second by Deb Hand. PASSED (1) It was recommended that the conclusions of the payroll audit by the Diocese be referred to the finance committee and come back next month with a proposal.
